William LELLIOTT (1837-1917)

and Mary AUSTIN (1838-1921)

William Lelliott and Mary Austin married by banns on 5 May 1865 in Sompting, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and shepherd from Broadwater.  She was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Aaron Lelliott a shepherd and James Austin a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Daniel Austin and Jane Austin.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Lilliat was baptised on 12 March 1837 in Wiston, Sussex.  He was the son of Aaron Lilliat (1815-1853) and Anne Goacher (1812-1894).  The baptism register noted that he was a twin and his father a labourer.  His twin brother was Aaron Lilliat (1837-1887).  William died aged 80 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1917 in the Lewes registration district.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 3 years old and living with his parents at Buddington in Wiston.  In 1851 William was a 14 year old farm labourer.

Mary Austing was baptised on 8 April 1838 in Sompting, Sussex.  She was the daughter of James Austen (1796-1873) and Mary Jarrett (1806-1875).  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.  Mary died aged 83 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1921 in the Lewes registration district.  In 1851 she was a 13 year old scholar and living with her parents in Sompting.  Her father was then a farmer and labourer.  Also part of the household was her 79 year old grandfather Thomas Jarrett.

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and 4 children (Hannah, James, Jane and Harriet) were living at Dog Kennel in Patching, Sussex.  William was then said to be 43 years old and a shepherd from Steyning, whilst Mary was 33 and from Worthing.  Also with the family was 18 year old lodger, Philip Molden who was a shepherd from Findon.

In 1881 the couple and 4 children (James, Jane, Harriett and William) were living at Halewick in Sompting.  William was then said to be a 46 year old shepherd from Wiston and Mary was 43 and from Sompting.

At the time of the 1891 census the couple and 2 children (Hannah and William) were living at Asham Cottage in Beddingham, Sussex.  William was a 54 year old shepherd from Wiston and Mary was 53 and from Sompting.

The 1901 census records William and Mary were living at Colbrans in Laughton, Sussex.  He was then a 64 year old shepherd from Wiston and she was 63 and from Sompting.  Their surname was then spelt Lelliot.

By 1911 the couple were living with the family of their widowed daughter Harriet Wood at 34 Trevor Gardens, Beddingham.  William was a 75 year old retired shepherd from Wiston and Mary was 74 and from Sompting.  They said they had been married for 47 years and had had 5 children who were living and 2 who had died.

(Another William Lelliott was born about 1837 in Fulking, Sussex and married Mary Hards in 1859.)

William Lelliott and Mary Austin had 7 children:

  1. Hannah Austin or Lelliott was born about 1860 in Worthing.  Her birth may have been registered as Hannah Austin in the second quarter of 1859 in the Steyning registration district.  The 1871 census recorded she was 11 year old Hannah Lelliott.  In 1881, 21 year old Hannah Austin was an unmarried general servant in the home of John Tee at 72 Parade, Broadwater, Sussex.  Her place of birth was then given as Sompting.  The 1891 census records she was Hannah Lelliott an unmarried 32 year old and living with her parents.

  2. James Lelliot was baptised on 1 December 1866 in Patching.  The baptism register noted his father was a shepher.  He was 4 years old in 1871.  In 1881 he was a 15 year old shepherd boy.  James married Esther Ann Fuller in 1897.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Jane Lelliott was baptised on 8 November 1868 in Patching.  The baptism register noted her father was a shepherd.  She was 2 years old in 1871.  In 1881 she was a 13 year old scholar.

  4. Harriet Lelliot was baptised on 11 September 1870 in Patching.  The baptism register noted her father was a shepherd.  She was 7 months old when the 1871 census was recorded.  In 1881 she was an 11 year old scholar.

When the 1911 census was recorded, Harriet Wood was a 40 year old widow and living at 34 Trevor Gardens, Beddingham, along with her 4 children (Alfred, George, William and Mabel).  She had had 5 children who were living and 4 who had died.  Also with her were her parents.

Harriet had the following known children:

    1. Alfred Wood was born about 1892 in Glynde, Sussex.  He was a 19 year old farm labourer in 1911.

    2. George Wood was born about 1896 in Glynde.  He was a 15 year old farm labourer in 1911.

    3. William Wood was born about 1907 in Glynde.  He was 4 years old in 1911.

    4. Mabel Wood was born about 1909 in Glynde.  She was 2 years old in 1911.

  5. William Lelliott was born about 1877 in Southwick, Sussex.  He was a 4 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1981 he was a 15 year old shepherd's assistant.
