Ancestors of Mandy Willard

William LILLIOTT (1807-1881)

and Elizabeth STENNING (1817-1860)

William Lilliott and Elizabeth Stenning married on 30 October 1834 in Washington, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Lilliot was baptised on 5 April 1807 in Ashurst, Sussex.  He was the son of William Lilliot (1777-?) and Mary Hammond (c1780-?).  William died aged 73 years and was buried on 19 August 1881 in Ashurst.  The burial register recorded his name as William Lelliott.

Elizabeth Stenning was baptised on 26 October 1817 in Twinham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of James Stenning (c1779-1864) and Mary Godsmark (c1789-1849).  Elizabeth died aged 43 years and was buried on 16 September 1860 in Ashurst.  The burial register recorded her name as Elizabeth Lelliott.

In 1851 the couple and their 6 children were living in Ashurst and William was a 44 year old agricultural labourer.  By 1861, 54 year old William was widower and living in Ashurst with his son Jesse and a 60 year widowed housekeeper, someone Mayhead, who had been born in Boxgrove, Sussex.

William Lilliott and Elizabeth Stenning had 8 known children:

1. Peter Lelliott was baptised on 10 July 1836 in Ashurst.  He died aged 9 months and was buried on 14 April 1837 in Ashurst.

2. William Lelliott was baptised on 19 May 1838 in Ashurst.  In 1851 he was a 13 year old agricultural labourer.

   William married Eliza Slater by banns on 15 June 1867 in Pulborough, Sussex.  He was then a 29 year old bachelor and labourer from Twineham, whilst Eliza was a 24 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as William Lelliott and William Slater who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Willard and Sarah Slater.

   Eliza was born about 1823/4 in Pulborough.

   When the 1871 census was recorded the couple were living in Horsham.  William was then a 32 yea year old railway labourer and gave his place of birth as Ashurst.  Eliza was 27 and said she was born in Pulborough.

3. Sarah Lelliott was baptised on 21 June 1840 in Ashurst.  She was an 11 year old scholar in 1851.

4. Samuel Lelliott was baptised on 10 July 1842 in Ashurst.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1851.

5. Mark Lelliott was baptised on 21 July 1844 in Ashurst.  In 1851 he was a 7 year old scholar.  In 1861 he was a 16 year old agricultural labourer living at Ford in Ashurst, the home of Andrew Longley.

   Mark married Sarah Rebecca Robinson in the second quarter of 1873 in the Cuckfield registration district.

6. James Lelliott was baptised on 22 November 1846 in Ashurst.  In 1851 he was 5 years old.  In 1861 he was a 14 year old general servant living at Lock in Ashurst, the home of William Weaver.

   James married Lucy Standing on 29 September 1866 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.

   Lucy was baptised on 20 February 1848 in Hurstpierpoint and was the daughter of William Standing and Mary Tidy.

7. Jesse Lelliott was baptised on 1 December 1850 in Ashurst.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was 5 months old.  In 1861 he was a 10 year old carter boy and the only one of his siblings living at home with his father.

   As Jesse Lelliot he married Caroline Lelliot in the fourth quarter of 1872 in the Steyning registration district.

   Caroline was baptised on 21 February 1847 in Ashurst and was the daughter of William Lelliot (1799-1871) and Harriet Shoulder (1809-1887).

   Jesse and Caroline had 7 known children:

   1. William Lelliott was born about 1875 in West Grinstead.

   2. George Lelliott was born about 1879 in Ashurst.

   3. Fanny Lelliott was born about 1880 in Ashurst.

   4. Caroline Lelliott was born about 1882 in Ashurst.

   5. Harry Lelliott was born about 1885 in Ashurst.

   6. Lucy Lelliot was baptised on 2 January 1887 in Ashurst

   7. Herbert Lelliott was baptised on 4 August 1889 in Ashurst.

8. Mary Ann Lelliott was baptised on 10 March 1854 in Ashurst.
