William LELLIOT (1799-1871)

and Harriet SHOULDER (1809-1887)

William Lellyet and Harriet Shoulder married by banns on 17 June 1827 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ann Benfield and James Edwards.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Lelliot was baptised on 27 October 1799 in Ashurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Peter Lilliot (1761-1842) and Mary Ozzever (c1765-1846).  William died aged 72 years and was buried on 9 October 1871 in Ashurst.

Harriet Shoulder was baptised on 13 July 1809 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Shoulders and Elizabeth Streeter.  Harriet may have died aged 77 years and her death registered in the first quarter of 1887 in the Brighton registration district.

At the time of the 1861 census the couple and their 4 children were living at Church Cottage in Ashurst and William was a 61 year old agricultural labourer.  Harriet was then a 51 year old washer woman.  In 1871 the family were living at Oakford in Ashurst.

William Lelliot and Harriet Shoulder had 13 known children:

1. William Lelyet was baptised on 30 September 1827 in Upper Beeding and buried there on 4 October 1827, aged 2 days.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

2. Mary Ann Lelyet was baptised on 29 October 1829 in Upper Beeding and buried there on 3 November 1829, aged 2 weeks.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

3. Harriet Lelliott was baptised on 3 November 1830 in Upper Beeding.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.  In 1861 she was an unmarried 30 year old living at home with her parents.  Her place of birth was then given as Ashurst.

   Harriet married Robert Finch in the second quarter of 1861 in the Steyning registration district.

4. Elizabeth Lilliat was baptised on 24 February 1833 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

5. William Lelliot was baptised on 6 May 1834 in Upper Beeding and buried there on 9 May 1834, aged 12 hours.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

6. Ann Lelliott was baptised on 14 June 1835 in Ashurst.

7. Emily Lelliott was baptised on 3 December 1837 in Ashurst, at which time her father was a labourer.

   Emily married Walter Pilbeam on 25 October 1863 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.  They were both then aged 25 years and their fathers were named as John Pilbeam and William Lelliott.

8. Amy Lelliott was baptised on 5 July 1840 in Ashurst.

   Amy married John Groves on 2 May 1863 in Steyning, Sussex.

9. William Lelliott was baptised on 8 September 1844 in Ashurst.

10. Caroline Lelliott was baptised on 21 February 1847 in Ashurst.

    As Caroline Lelliot married Jesse Lelliot in the fourth quarter of 1872 in the Steyning registration district.

    Jesse was baptised on 1 December 1850 in Ashurst and was the son of William Lelliott (1807-1881) and Elizabeth Stenning (c1817-1860).

    Jesse and Caroline had 7 known children.

11. Fanny Lelliott was born about 1850 in Ashurst.  She was an 11 year old scholar in 1861.

12. Thomas Lelliott was baptised on 20 April 1851 in Ashurst, at which time his father was a labourer of Ashurst.  He was a 10 year old scholar in 1861.

13. Ellen Lelliott was baptised on 24 May 1854 in Ashurst, at which time her father was a labourer of Ashurst.  In 1861 she was 6 years old.  The 1871 census records that she was a 16 year old stone-picker and the only one of her siblings living at home with her parents.
