William LELLIOT (c1660-1736)

and Mary COPPER (c1665-1748)

William Lelliot and Mary Copper were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 4 May 1688 in Shermanbury, Sussex.

William Lilliot's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  I believe he was the son of Henry Lylliott (c1635-1681) and Mary.  He was a yeoman.  He was buried on 29 January 1635/6 in Shermanbury.  William left a will dated 7 May 1734 which was proved on 6 November 1736.  At the time he made his will he was in good health and did so knowing that it was the lot of man to die.

Mary Copper's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Mary Lilliot, widow was buried in Shermanbury on 13 January 1747/8.  Might she have been baptised as Mary Cowper in September 1669 in Henfield, the daughter of John Cowper and Mary?  Or maybe on 18 December 1659 in Cuckfield, the daughter of Thomas Cooper and Anne Hoad, or 4 March 1660 in Cowfold, the daughter of Thomas Cowper?  However, another Mary Copper married in nearby Bolney in 1687, and a Mary Cooper married in Cuckfield in 1678.

William Lilliot and Mary Copper had 9 known children:

  1. John Lelliot was baptised on 2 September 1688 in Shermanbury, the son of William and Mary.

As John Lilliot of Henfield did he marry Mary Hoad in 1724 in Woodmancote?  (They have their own page.)  He would have been about 36 at marriage and 57 at the birth of his last known child.

  2. William Lelliot was baptised on 13 August 1691 in Shermanbury, the twin son of William and Mary.  He was received into the church on 14 October 1691.  He may have been buried on 17 February 1730/1 in Shermanbury.  The burial notes that William Lilliot ye younger and that 6 shillings and 8 pence was received as he was a stranger and no parishioner for breach of ground.

  3. Henry Lelliot was baptised on 13 August 1691 in Shermanbury, the twin son of William and Mary. He was buried in Shermanbury on 19 August 1691.

  4. Mary Lelliot was baptised on 25 March 1696 in Shermanbury, the daughter of William and Mary.  In her father's will she was named as Mary Geer wife of Elias Geer.  A marriage licence was issued to them on 24 September 1718 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which stated that Ellis Geere was a yeoman of Henfield and Mary Lillyatt a spinster of Albourne.

  5. Henery Lelliot was baptised on 2 December 1698 in Shermanbury, the son of William and Mary.  He married twice.  Firstly to Mary Pavey in 1723 and then to Elizabeth Godley in 1734.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Peter Lelliot was baptised on 19 January 1700/1 in Shermanbury, the son of William and Mary.  He left a will dated 3 August 1772 and proved on 17 September 1772, at which time he was of Ashington, Sussex (click here to read my transcript of his will).

As Peter Lilliot he married Elizabeth Westover on 30 April 1734 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.

His wife died aged 77 years, possibly on 17 June 17??.  She was buried with her husband and their headstone reads "a Loyal subject in his life / A loving husband to his wife / and likewise to his religion / of the best of neighbours / right welcome Death by the hope to gain / One earth which ..... and pain / I hope to find a place of rest / Christ who calls Oh come ye blessed".

      2. Sarah Somersell

      3. Ann Somersell

    2. Elizabeth Lelliot was baptised on 5 December 1736 in Hurstpierpoint.  She probably died young as she was not mentioned in her father's will.

John Carter was baptised on 11 March 1762 in Shipely.  He married Elizabeth Turner by licence on 25 August 1785 in Ashurst.  He was a bachelor of Ashurst and she a spinster of Henfield.  Elizabeth was buried on 7 September 1790 in Ashurst and it was noted in the burial register that she was the wife of John Carter, junior.

      3. Mary Carter may have been born about 1761.  She married Thomas Woolven in 1781.  (They have their own page.)

  8. Thomas Lillyot, my 6x Great Grandfather, may have been born about 1705.  He married Bridget Purvey (1709-1778) in 1733.  (They have their own page.)

  9. Sarah Lelliot may have been born about 1707.  As a widow she was buried on 5 June 1790 in Cowfold.  She was named in her father's will as Sarah Smith wife of Samuel Smith.  They married on 22 June 1731 in Shermanbury.  He was then of Cowfold and Sarah Lilliot of Shermanbury.  Samuel was buried on 6 January 1777 in Cowfold.
