Thomas Ralph LELLIOTT (1834-1919)

and Caroline STANDING (1840-1873)

and Eliza Elizabeth CHEESMAN (1833-1912)

Thomas Lelliott and Caroline Standing by banns on 28 April 1860 in Steyning, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and carpenter and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Richard Lelliott a carpenter and Edward Standing a baker.  The witnesses to their marriage were Robert Cox and Jane Standing.  As Thomas Ralph Lelliott he married Eliza Elizabeth Cheesman on 12 October 1873 in Brighton.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Lelliott was baptised on 26 March 1834 in Washington, Sussex.  He was the son of Richard Lelliott (1799-1868) and Mary Ann Realf (1799-1869).  Thomas died age 85 years on 3 December 1919 in East Preston.  His death was registered as Thomas R. Lelliott.

Caroline Standing was baptised on 15 November 1840 in Steyning, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Edward Standing and Harriet Luke.  The baptism register noted her father was a baker.  She died aged 32 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1873 in the Brighton registration district.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple were living in the High Street, Steyning.  Thomas was then a 26 year old carpenter and Caroline was 20.  His place of birth was noted as Washington and hers as Steyning.

By 1871 the couple and 5 children (George, Amelia, William, Annie and Edith) were living at 5 Langney Road, Eastbourne.  Thomas was a 36 year old carpenter and Caroline was 30.  His place of birth was then given as Ashington.

Eliza Elizabeth Cheeseman was born about 1833/4 and baptised on 3 November 1839 at St. Nicholas in Brighton, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Cheeseman (c1793-?) and Ann (c1793-?).  Eliza died aged 78 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1912 in the Lewes registration district.  In 1851 she was a 17 year old pupil teacher and she was living with her parents at 37 Essex Street, Brighton.  Her parents were both then 58 years old and her father was a carpenter.  Also with them was Elizabeth's 23 year old married sister Sarah Hern and niece 3 year old Sarah Ann Hern.

In 1881 the couple and 3 children (George, William and Anne) were living at 15 Cobden Road, Brighton.  They were both aged 47 years.  No occupation was recorded for Thomas, but Elizabeth was a bellhanger.  Thomas said he was born in Ashington and Elizabeth in Brighton.  Also with the family was 54 year old widow and visitor, Sarah Hern.

When the 1891 census was recorded Thomas R. Lelliott was a 58 year old carpenter and Eliza E. Lelliott was 59.  They were living alone at 88 Upper Lewes Road, Brighton.

The 1901 census recorded the couple were living at 39 Brewer Street, Brighton.  He was a 63 year old carpenter and Elizabeth was 64.

In 1911, Thomas Ralph Lelliott was living in 1 room at 25 Edinburgh Road, Brighton and he was a 76 year old married and out of work carpenter.  He said he had been married 38 years and had had 5 children, 3 of whom were living and 2 deceased.  Eliza was not with Thomas when the census was recorded and I have not found her elsewhere.

Thomas Lelliott and Caroline Standing had 7 known children:

  1. Edwin James Lelliott was born on 9 October 1861 in Worthing, Sussex.  He died on 23 April 1896 in Brighton.  (I have taken his name and dates from Ancestry.co.uk.)  The 1871 census recorded that he was a 9 year old scholar and living in the High Street, Steyning with his Uncle Peter Lelliott and Aunt Sophia Lelliott.

  2. George Thomas Lelliott was baptised on 24 May 1863 in Broadwater, Sussex.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1871.  In 1881 he was a 17 year old scholar.  He died on 29 November 1883 in Worthing.  (I have taken his date of death from Ancestry.co.uk.)

  3. Amelia Jane Lelliott was baptised on 9 April 1865 in Broadwater.  She was a 6 year old scholar in 1871.  The 1881 census records that Amelia Jane Elliott was a 16 year old servant in the home of Marian Campbell Smith at 30 Hampton Place, Brighton.  Her place of birth was then given as Worthing.

  4. William Richard Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1868 in Worthing.  He was 3 years old in 1871.  In 1881 he was a 13 year old scholar.  He died on 27 December 1963 in Worthing.  (I have taken his date of death from Ancestry.co.uk.)

William married Mary Ann Lindup on 4 December 1890 in Tarring, Sussex.

Mary Ann was born about 1865 and may have died on 18 February 1953 (I have taken her dates from Ancestry.co.uk, although that says she died in 1853.)

William and Mary Ann had the following children:

    1. Frederick Thomas Lelliott (1891-1971)

    2. William George Lelliott (1893-1965)

    3. Dorothy Ella H. Lelliott (1894-1915)

    4. Ada Minnie Lelliot (1895-

    5. Eva Mary Lelliott (1898-

    6. Alice Rowena Lelliott (1902-1991)

  5. Annie Sophia Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1868 in Worthing.  She was 3 years old in 1871.  She was 13 years old in 1881.

Annie married Francis Joseph Smith in the second quarter of 1892 in the Brighton registration district.

  6. Edith Harriett Lelliott was baptised on 18 May 1871 at Holy Trinity in Eastbourne.  The baptism register noted her father was a carpenter.  She was a year old when the 1871 census was recorded.  Her death was registered in the second quarter of 1871 in the Eastbourne registration district.

  7. Frederick Duke Lelliott was born on 30 August 1871 in Brighton and died there on 1 January 1872.  (I have taken his name and dates from Ancestry.co.uk.)  (I wonder if his middle name was Luke rather than Duke, after his maternal grandmother's maiden name?)

I have not seen any baptism source details for Edwin and Frederick, so don't know for certain they were the sons of Thomas and Caroline.

Thomas Ralph Lelliott and Eliza Elizabeth Cheesman had 1 known child:

  1. Jane Elizabeth Lelliott was baptised on 15 March 1875 at St. Peter in Brighton.  The baptism register noted her father was a carpenter and her mother's name was Eliza Elizabeth, and they were living at 17 Dinapore Street (as per the SFHG's transcription).  She died on 16 March 1875.
