Samuel LILLYOT
(1748-1817)
and Elizabeth SERGEANT (1748-?)

Samuel
Lilliott and Elizabeth Sergeant were my 5x Great Grandparents.
(Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married
by banns on 9 December 1770 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Shipley,
Sussex. Samuel was then of Wiston, Sussex and Elizabeth of Shipley.
They both made their X marks. The witnesses were
Sarah Laker
(mark), a widow, and
Richard Garton (signed).
Samuel
Lillyott was baptised on 3 April 1748 at St. Peter's in Woodmancote, Sussex. He
was the son of
Thomas Lillyot (c1705-1765) and
Bridget Purvey
(1709-1778). He died aged 69 years and was buried on 17 November 1817
at St. Mary's
in Wiston, Sussex. The burial register recorded his name as
Samuel Lilliat. All his grandparents had died by the time he was
born.
Elizabeth Sergeant was most probably baptised as Elizabeth Surgeon
on 24 April 1748 in Henfield, Sussex. She was born on 14 April 1748
and was the daughter of
Thomas
Surgeon (c1715-1785) and
Elizabeth Evans (c1720-1780).

Banns of marriage were published at Ashurst, Sussex on 3, 10 and 17 April
1791, between Thomas Brooker of Ashurst and Elizabeth Lilliott
of Steyning, Sussex, but I'm not sure 1771 Elizabeth or another married
Thomas.

Notes
Richard Garton was a witness to the 1770
marriage of Samuel Lilliott and Elizabeth Sergeant, but was he a
relative or a friend of the couple?
A Richard Garton
had married Joan Greenfield by licence on 27 November 1746 in Shipley.
Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester on 27
November 1746 and recorded that he was a blacksmith of Shipley and she,
Joanna Greenfield, was also of Shipley. Surety for the licence was
provided by Richard himself and Zephaniah Greenfield a husbandman of
Billingshurst. They had a son, Richard Garton, baptised on 24 June
1750 in Shipley - was he the witness to Samuel and Elizabeth's marriage?
Zephaniah Greenfield of Billingshurst married Ann Greenfield of
West Chiltington by banns on 11 May 1743 in Billingshurst.
Sarah Laker, widow, was also witness to Samuel and
Elizabeth's 1770 marriage. As Sarah Penfold might she have married
William Laker of West Grinstead by banns on 27 December 1757 in Shipley?
The witnesses to the marriage were John Penfold and William Banfield
(he was probably a church warden as he was a witness to many marriages).
Did Sarah then marry John Parsons by banns on 9 October 1771 in Shipley?
At the time they were both of Shipley. The witnesses to the marriage were
John Bristow and James Fillary.
