Richard LELLIOTT (1799-1868)

and Mary Ann REALF (1799-1869)

 

Richard Lelliott and Mary Ann Realf married on 16 September 1822 in Warminghurst, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Richard was the great great nephew of my 6x great grandfather.)

Richard Lelliott was baptised on 11 August 1799 in Washington, Sussex.  He was the son of Richard Liliot (1759-1847) and Judith Tidey (1767-1806).  Richard died in 1868.  He was a carpenter.

Mary Ann Relf was baptised on 26 May 1799 in Warminghurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Thomas Relf and Ann.  Mary Ann died on 28 March 1869 in Washington.

The 1851 census records that the couple were both aged 50 years and living in Washington along with 3 of their children and a young grandson.  In 1861 the couple together with 2 of their daughters and a grandson were living on Washington Common.

 

Richard Lelliott and Mary Ann Realf had 14 known children:

  1. Richard Lelliott was born on 24 August 1823 in Washington.  He died on 15 January 1903 in Warminghurst.  When the 1901 census was recorded he was 77 years old and living with the family of his son John at Longberry in Warminghurst.

    Richard married twice.  Firstly to Eliza Goodger on 6 February 1848.  Then, as a 53 year old widower, Richard married Mary Floate on 15 January 1877 at St. Peters in Brighton, Sussex.  She was then a 63 year old widow and her father was named as Richard Mitchell.

    Eliza was baptised on 13 February 1824 in Warminghurst and was the daughter of John Goodger and Deborah Frost.

    Richard and Eliza had 11 known children:

    1. Richard Lelliatt was baptised on 2 July 1848 in Warminghurst.

      As Richard Lelliott he married Mary Anne Ragless on 14 September 1872 in Warminghurst.

      Mary Anne was baptised on 1 September 1850 in Warminghurst and was the daughter of Edward Ragless and Catherine.

      Richard and Mary Anne had 10 known children:

      1. Matilda Catherine Lelliott was born in the second quarter of 1873 in Ashington, Sussex.

      2. Arthur Richard Lelliott was born in the fourth quarter of 1874 in Warminghurst.

      3. Mark Lelliott was born in the second quarter of 1876 in Warminghurst.

      4. Ernest John Lelliott was born in the fourth quarter of 1877 in Warminghurst.

      5. Percy William Lelliott was born in the fourth quarter of 1881 in Ashington.

      6. Ellen Lelliott was born about 1884 in Warminghurst.

      7. Ethel Lelliott was born in the second quarter of 1887 in Ashington.

      8. Florence Lelliott was born in the third quarter of 1892 in Ashington.

      9. Charlie Lelliott was born in the third quarter of 1892 in Ashington.

      10. Harold Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1894 in Ashington.

    2. Eliza Lelliatt was baptised on 25 December 1849 in Warminghurst.

    3. Mary Anne Lelliatt was baptised on 25 January 1851 in Warminghurst.

    4. Deborah Lelliatt was baptised on 27 June1852 in Warminghurst.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was an 8 year old visitor and cousin in the home of 38 year old Isaac Short and his 27 year old wife Fanny, at Muttons Farm in Thakeham.

      Deborah married Alfred Butcher on 2 November 1873 in Warminghurst.

      Alfred was born about 1853 in Washington, Sussex.

      Alfred and Deborah had 9 known children:

      1. Eliza Butcher Lelliott was baptised on 1 November 1873 in Warminghurst.

      2. Frances Mary Butcher was baptised on 27 September 1874 in Ashington, Sussex.

      3. Annie Butcher was baptised on 16 January 1876 in Warminghurst and buried there on 19 Mary 1876.

      4. Rose Butcher was born in the second quarter of 1877 in Warminghurst.  She died aged 16 years in 1893 from Typhoid.

      5. Ellen Butcher was born in the second quarter of 1879 in Warminghurst.

      6. Alfred Butcher was born about 1882 in Thakeham.

      7. John Butcher was born in the fourth quarter of 1883 in Thakeham.

      8. Bertha Butcher was born in the first quarter of 1887 in Thakeham.

      9. James Richard Butcher was born in the second quarter of 1890 in Warminghurst.

    5. Frances Lelliatt was baptised on 2 April 1854 in Warminghurst.

    6. John Lelliatt was baptised on 9 December 1855 in Warminghurst.

      As John Lelliott he married Eliza Stringer in the fourth quarter of 1882 in the Thakeham registration district.

      Eliza was baptised on 10 February 1861 in Pulborough, Sussex and was the daughter of Jane Stringer (1835-?).  When the 1861 census was recorded she was 4 months old and living with her mother in Pulborough in the home of her mother's sister's family Mary Parker and her husband George Parker.

      When the 1901 census was recorded John and Eliza and their 5 children and his father were living at Longbury in Warminghurst.  John was then a 44 year old market gardener.

      John and Eliza had the following known children:

      1. Annie Lelliott was born about 1883 in Warminghurst.  She was a 17 year old domestic housemaid in 1901.

      2. Frank Lelliott was born about 1887 in Steyning.  In 1901 he was 14 years old.

      3. Percy George Lelliot was born in the third quarter of 1893 in Storrington, Sussex.  He was 7 at the time of 1901 census.

      4. Mabel Matilda Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1896 in Storrington.  She was 5 years old in 1901

      5. Dorothy Jane Lelliott was born in the second quarter of 1899 in Warminghurst.  She was 2 years old in 1901.

    7. George Lelliatt was baptised on 24 October 1858 in Warminghurst.  In 1881 he was an unmarried 22 year old in door farm servant living at Upper Chancton in Washington, Sussex, the home of Edwin Burton.

    8. Anne Lelliatt was baptised on 12 February 1860 in Warminghurst.

    9. Thomas Lelliatt was baptised on 27 July 1862 in Warminghurst.  In 1881 he was an agricultural labourer and living with the family of his sister Deborah in Thakeham.

    10. Peter Lelliatt was baptised on 24 January 1864 in Warminghurst.

      As Peter Lelliott he married Fanny Parsons in the second quarter of 1888 in the Steyning registration district.

      Fanny was baptised on 19 July 1863 in Shipley, Sussex and was the daughter of John Parsons (c1840-?) and Sarah Laker (c1844-?).

      When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and 2 children were living at Sober Bottom in Bramber, Sussex and Peter was an agricultural labourer.  Also with them on census night was his 26 year old married sister-in-law, Sarah Lelliott.

      Peter and Fanny had the following known children:

      1. Annie Lelliott was born about 1888 in Shipley.  She was 3 years old in 1891.

      2. John Lelliott was born about 1890 in Bramber.  He was a year old in 1891.

    11. Harry Lelliatt was baptised on 26 November 1865 in Warminghurst.

  2. Mary Lelliott was baptised on 30 January 1825 in Washington.

    Mary married George Berry on 14 October 1844 in Ashington.

  3. Susan Lelliott was baptised on 10 June 1826 in Washington.

  4. Sarah Lelliott was baptised on 14 October 1827 in Washington.

    Sarah married John Berry.

  5. Frances Elizabeth Lelliott was baptised on 19 January 1829 in Warminghurst.  She died on 30 September 1909 in Worthing and was buried near her husband in Broadwater cemetery.  The 1851 and 1861 census records that she was born in Washington.  At the time of the 1851 census she was an unmarried 23 year old house servant living in the home of Charles Ede at 2 South Street in Broadwater.

    Frances had 2 illegitimate sons by James Nash:

    1. James Lelliatt was born on 8 January 1848 in Washington.  He was baptised when he was 8 years old on 23 December 1855 in Warminghurst.  He died aged 76 years in the first quarter of 1924 in Brighton.  At the time of the 1851 census was 3 years old and living with his maternal grandparents in Washington.  The 1861 census recorded that he was 13 year old James Bishop and he was living at home with his mother, step father and younger siblings.

      James married twice, firstly to Agnes Pescott on 25 April 1869 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.  Their marriage certificate records their fathers names as Henry Lelliott and Ambrose Pescott.  James then married another Agnes Pescott in the second quarter of 1900 in the East Preston registration district.  The second Agnes was the niece of the first Agnes!

      Agnes was baptised on 12 November 1848 in Amberley, Sussex and was the daughter of Ambrose Pescott (1818-?) and Jane Ayling.  She died aged 47 years and her death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1896 in the Brighton registration district.

      The second Agnes was born in the second quarter of 1879 in South Lambeth, London, and was the daughter of William Pescott (1847-?) and Jane Allfrey (1849-?).  She was baptised as Agnes Jane Pescott on 9 May 1879 at All Saints in Lambeth.  In 1881 she was 2 years old and living with her parents and siblings at 8B Simpson Street in Lambeth.

      When the 1871 census was recorded the James, his first wife and their young daughter were living at 17 Melbourne Street, Brighton and James was a gardener.  By 1881 the family had moved to 72 Princes Street, Brighton and James was still earning his living as a gardener.  In 1891 they were living at 35 Richmond Road, Brighton.  In 1901 James and his second wife and 2 children were living at 13 Hanover Street, Brighton.

      James and Agnes had 11 known children, 9 of whom were:

      1. Emily Jane Lelliott was born in the fourth quarter of 1869 in Brighton.  She was a year old when the 1871 census was recorded.  In 1881 she was an 11 year old scholar.  She died of Spanish Flu in 1919.  Emily married Thomas Talbot.  They emigrated to New York. 

      2. James Lelliott was born in the third quarter of 1871 in Brighton.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1881.  He joined the Royal Sussex Regiment - Corporal Reg. No. 3666, awarded the 1895 Punjab/Tirah.  James died of a disease on 5 February 1898 in the Kyber Pass, at which time he was based at Fort Jamrud.

      3. Alfred Lelliott was born in the second quarter of 1873 and baptised on 26 April 1874 at St. Peter in Brighton.  He died aged 4 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1878 in the Brighton registration district.

      4. Ernest George Lelliott was born in the fourth quarter of 1875 in Brighton.  He as a 5 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1891 he was a 15 year old milk carrier and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

      5. Edwin Lelliott was baptised on 6 January 1878 at St. Peter in Brighton.

      6. Alice Edith Lelliott was baptised on 9 November 1879 at St. Peters in Brighton.  She was a year old when the 1881 census was recorded.

      7. Linda Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1882 in Brighton.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1891.  She died aged 13 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1895 in the Brighton registration district.

      8. Frederick Herbert Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1884 in Brighton.  He was the sixth son.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1891.  He married Alice Wren in the fourth quarter of 1910 in the Brighton registration district.  At one point they lived in a Cottage in Spring Gardens.  Their daughter Alice Emily Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1914 and died aged 92 years at Belle Vue Park Country House on 18 July 2006.  Alice Emily married a Mr. Carter.

      9. Sidney Percy Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1886 in Brighton.  In 1891 he was a 5 year old scholar.

      James and his second wife Agnes, had 10 children, 4 of whom were:

      1. Hertbert James Lelliott was born in the first quarter of 1900 in Brighton.  He was a year old in 1901.  He died aged 9 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1909 in the Brighton registration district.

      2. Mabel Agnes Lelliott was born in the second quarter of 1901 in Brighton.  She was a month old at the time of 1901 census.

      3. Agnes Annie Lelliott was born on 26 January 1911 in Brighton.  She died aged 84 years in March 1995.  Agnes married Reuben Henry Whiting.  Reuben was born in 1908 and died on 4 March 2004.

      4. Leslie Albert Lelliott was born on 11 December 1912 in Brighton.  He died aged 86 years in October 1999.

    2. Charles William Lelliatt was born in Thakeham Union Workhouse in 1851 and baptised at the age of 4 years on 23 December 1855 in Warminghurst.  He married Ann Catherine Grace Cozens in 1881.  (They have their own page.)

    Frances married Henry Bishop in the second quarter of 1853 in the Thakeham registration district.

    Henry was born about 1823-6 in Thakeham.  He may have been baptised on 20 April 1823, the son of John Bishop and Sarah (possibly Sarah Charman), or on 15 August 1825, the son of Thomas Bishop and Mary (possbily Mary Standen).  Both baptisms took place in Thakeham.  At the time of the 1851 census Henry may have been a 25 or 26 year old unmarried agricultural labourer, lodging in the home of Frank Nicholdson at Muttons in Washington.  A Henry Bishop married Ellen Dennet on 4 August 1850 in Thakeham, but I have not been able to find them in the 1851 census.

    When the 1861 census was recorded the family were living at Heath Common in Warminghurst and Henry was then a 38 year old farm labourer.  In 1881 the couple and 5 children were living at 5 London Road, Broadwater.  Henry was then a 58 year old bricklayer's labourer and Frances was 53.  Also with them on census night was 23 year old widow and lodger Ann C. Cozens, her 2 children and her brother Mark Penfold who was 19 years old and also a bricklayer's labourer.

    Henry and Frances had the following known children:

    1. Ellen Bishop was baptised on 19 March 1854 in Warminghurst.  She was 6 years old in 1861.

    2. Frances Bishop was baptised on 14 September 1856 in Warminghurst.  She was 5 years old in 1861.

    3. Mary Anne Bishop was baptised on 6 June 1858 in Warminghurst.  In 1861 she was 2 years old.

    4. Henry Bishop was baptised on 7 October 1860 in Warminghurst.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was 9 months old.

    5. John Bishop was baptised on 13 July 1862 in Warminghurst.

  6. George Lelliott was baptised on 21 February 1830 in Washington.

  7. Caroline Lelliott was baptised on 22 April 1831 in Washington.  She died in June 1855 in Thakeham.

  8. Peter Lelliott was baptised on 2 November 1833 in Washington.  He died on 24 May 1909 in Thakeham.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was an 18 year old agricultural labourer and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

    Peter married Fanny Carter in June 1859 in Thakeham.

  9. Thomas Lelliott was baptised on 26 March 1834 in Washington.  He married twice, firstly to Caroline Standing in 1860 and then to Eliza Elizabeth Cheesman in 1873.  (They have their own page.)

  10. Ann Lelliott was baptised on 17 January 1836 in Washington.  She died in June 1883 in Horsham.  In 1861 she was an unmarried 23 year old house servant living at home with her parents.

    Ann married James Charman on 12 July 1862 in Washington.  James and Ann had 5 children.

  11. John Lelliott was baptised on 12 November 1837 in Washington.  He died on 6 October 1910 in Worthing.

    John married Ann Butcher in December 1859 in Thakeham.

  12. Elizabeth Lelliott was baptised on 9 June 1839 in Washington.  She died in 1874.  In 1851 she was an 11 year old scholar.

    Elizabeth married George Short.

  13. Eliza Lelliott was baptised on 6 June 1841 in Washington.  In 1851 she was a 10 year old scholar.

    Eliza married twice, firstly to James Tidey in 1860 and then to Robert Merritt in the fourth quarter of 1879 in the East Preston registration district.

    Robert was born about 1847 in Washington and was the son of Moses Merritt (c1805-?) and his second wife Mary Goodger.

    In 1861 Eliza and her young son were living with her parents.  By 1871 Eliza had moved to Nepcote in Findon, Sussex along with her 2 sons.  The census recorded that she was a married charwoman, but her husband was not at home of census night.

    James and Eliza had 4 known children:

    1. James Albert Tidey was born in the second quarter of 1861 in Washington.  He was a month old when the 1861 census was recorded.  In 1871 he was a 10 year old plough boy.  In 1891 he was living with his mother and step father and he was then 30 years old with no occupation.

    2. George Richard Tidey was born in the third quarter of 1867 in Washington.  In 1871 he was 3 years old.  In 1881 he was a 13 year old scholar living in the home of his mother and step father's family.  He was an unmarried 23 year old mechanic/painter in 1891 and living at home with his mother and step father.

    3. Eliza Tidey was born about 1870 in Findon.  She was an 11 year old scholar in 1891 and living at home with her mother and step father.  In 1891 she was 21 year old Edith Tidey living at home where she was said to have no occupation, although the census goes on to say she was a general domestic servant.

    4. Frederick Tidey was born about 1873 in Findon.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1881.

    Robert and Eliza had 1 known daughter:

    1. Annie Merritt was born about 1880 in Worthing.  She was a year old at the time of the 1881 census.

  14. Henry Lelliott was born in 1842 in Washington.
