Richard LILLIOT (1759-1847)

and Judith TIDEY (1767-1806)

Richard Liliot and Judith Tidey married by banns on 29 September 1789 in Washington, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Hooper and Richard Butcher.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Peter was the great nephew of my 6x great grandfather.)

Richard Liliot was baptised on 9 December 1759 in Ashurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Peter Liliot (1732-1803) and Queen Stringer (1737-1828).  When the 1841 census was recorded he was an 80 year old gardener, living with his younger brother William Lilliott in Washington.  He died aged 87 years and was buried on 1 July 1847 in St. John's in Southover, Lewes, Sussex, as Richard Lilliott.

Judith Tidey was baptised on 14 September 1767 in Washington, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Tidey (1740-1817) and Judith Fowler (1742-1809).  She was buried on 14 December 1806 in Washington.

Richard Lilliot and Judith Tidey had 5 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Lelliott was baptised on 21 March 1790 in Washington.

  2. Ann Lelliott was baptised on 22 June 1794 in Washington.

  3. Richard Lelliott was baptised on 11 August 1799 in Washington, Sussex.  He married Mary Ann Realf in 1822.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Peter Lelliott was baptised on 28 June 1801 in Warminghurst.  He was buried on 13 April 1882 in Steyning.

Peter married Sophia Ayres on 1 May 1827 in Washington.

Sophia was baptised on 4 May 1806 in Glynde, Sussex and was the daughter of John Ayres and Jane Blabber.  She died on 4 March 1900 and was buried on 7 March 1900 in Steyning.

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple were living in the High Street, Steyning.  Peter was then a 67 year old gardener and Sophia was 66.  His place of birth was noted as Washington and hers as Ringmer.  Also with them was their 9 year old nephew Edwin J. Lelliott.

  5. John Lelliott was born about 1803 in Washington.  He died aged 74 years and was buried on 5 November 1877 at St. John's in Southover, Lewes.

John married Rose Cullen on 13 October 1827 at All Saints in Lewes.

Rose Callow was baptised on 10 August 1808 in Ringmer and was the daughter of William Callow and Rose Smith.  She died aged 75 years and was buried on 20 November 1882 at St. John's in Southover, Lewes.

John and Rose had the following children:

    1. Rose Cullen Lelliott (1829-1903)

    2. Caroline Lelliott (1830-?)

    3. Richard Lelliott (1833-1918)

    4. Ann Elizabeth Lelliott (1836-1909)
