Peter Lelliott and Elizabeth Martin married on 21
December 1823 in Steyning, Sussex. (They were not my direct
ancestors.)
Peter Lilliott was baptised on 6 January 1799 in Ashurst, Sussex.
He was the son of
John Lelliott
(1764-1850) and Zilpha
Dumbrill (1771-?).
Elizabeth Martin's was baptised on 28 November 1802 in
Steyning, Sussex. She was the daughter of John Martin
and Elizabeth
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 5 children were living in
Church Street, Steyning. Peter was then a 44 year old agricultural
labourer and Elizabeth was 33 years old. In 1851 the couple and 5
children were still living in Church Street and Peter was a 51 year old
agricultural labourer and Elizabeth was 48. They both said they were
born in Steyning. Also with the family on census night was 4 year old
nurse child, Mary J. Witten who had been
born in Brighton.

Harriet Lelliott was baptised on 20 February 1826 in
Steyning.

Sarah Lelliott was baptised on 19 February 1828 in
Steyning.

Hannah Lelliott was baptised on 29 May 1831 in Steyning.
She was 10 years old in 1841 and the eldest of her siblings living at
home.

Zilpha Lelliott was baptised on 13 November 1832 in
Steyning. She was 8 years old in 1841.

Barbara Lelliott was baptised on 4 November 1834 in
Steyning. She was 6 years old in 1841. In 1851 she was 16
years old and the eldest of her siblings living at home.
As Barbara Lilliott she married Thomas Burden
on 25 January 1857 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.
When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and their 2 children were
living at 69 Trafalgar Street, Brighton. Thomas was described as
Thomas Barden, junior and he was a 30 year old cooper
and gave his place of birth as Brighton. Barbara was 26 and said
she was born in Steyning. With the family on census night was 15
year old sister Emma Lilliott who was a nurse and 21
year old unmarried brother Alfred Barden who was a fish
salesman.
Thomas and Barbara had the following children by the time of the 1861
census:

Esther B. Barden was born about
1857 in Brighton. She was 4 years old in 1861.

Eliza A. Barden was born about
1859 in Brighton. She was 2 years old in 1861.

Susan Lilliott was baptised on 23 December 1837 in
Steyning. The baptism register also recorded that her sisters
Zelpha and Barbara were also baptised on the same day. The 1841
census records that she was 3 year old Susanna Lilliott.
In 1851 she was 13 years old.

Henry Peter Lelliott was baptised on 31 May 1840 in
Steyning. He was a year old at the time of the 1841 census.
In 1851 he was an 11 year old scholar.

William Lelliott was baptised on 5 June 1842 in
Steyning.

Emma Lelliott was baptised on 5 April 1846 in Steyning.
She was a 5 year old scholar in 1851. In 1861 she was living with
the family of her elder sister Barbara.

Lenoard Hugh Lelliott was baptised on 15 July 1849 in
Steyning. He was a year old at the time of the 1851 census.

Another Peter Lilliot married Sophia Ayres
on 1 May 1827 in Washington, Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a
spinster. When this 1841 census was recorded, this couple were living
the High Street, Steyning. Peter's age was recorded as 40 year and
Sophia as 35. In 1851 they were still living in Steyning High Street.
Peter was a 48 year old gardener's labourer and said he was born in
Washington and Sophia was 44 and said she was born in Ringmer, Sussex.
Sophia was baptised on 4 May 1806 in Glynde, Sussex and was the daughter of
John Ayres and Jane Blaber.
