Peter LILLIOT (1732-1803)

and Queen STRINGER (1737-1828)

St. Peter's, Henfield, circa 1905 - from http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.htmlPeter Liliot and Queen Stringer married by banns on 8 May 1759 at the parish church of St. Peter's in Henfield, Sussex.  He was then of Henfield and she of Ashurst.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Stringer and Mary Vinall.  The banns were published in Ashurst on 15, 22 and 29 April 1759.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Peter was the nephew of my 6x great grandfather.)

Peter Lilliot was born on 30 May 1732 and baptised on 11 June 1732 in Henfield.  He was the son of John Lilliot (c1700-?) and Mary Hoad (c1705-).  He was buried on 23 March 1803 in Ashurst.  The burial register records that Peter Lilliot, senior was a pauper.

Queen Stringer was baptised on 20 August 1737 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Richard Stringer (1699-1780) and Katherine Jenner (1710-1768).  She died aged 90 and was buried in Ashurst in 1828, and her name was recorded as Quean Lilliott in the burial register.  She was most probably named after her mother's younger sister Queen Jenner who was born in 1718.

Peter Lilliot and Queen Stringer had 7 known children:

  1. Richard Liliot was baptised on 9 December 1759 in Ashurst.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was an 80 year old gardener, living with his younger brother William in Washington.

Richard married Judith Tidey on 29 September 1789 in Washington, Sussex.  He may also have married for a second time to Sarah sometime before or 1799, or Judith and Sarah may have been one and the same.

Richard and Sarah had 1 known son:

    1. Richard Lelliott was baptised on 11 August 1799 in Washington, Sussex.  He married Mary Ann Realf in 1822.  (They have their own page.)

Might they also have been the parents of:

    1. John Lelliott was born about 1803 in Washington.  John married Rose Callow (or Cullen) on 13 October 1827 at All Saints in Lewes.  (They will have their own page.)

  2. Peter Lilliot was baptised on 15 November 1761 in Ashurst.  He married Mary Ozzever in 1789.  (They have their own page.)

  3. John Lilliott was baptised on 15 March 1764 in Ashurst.

John may have married Zilpha Dumbrill on 11 September 1793 in Ashurst.  (They have their own page.)  But another John Lilliot was baptised in Ashurst on 16 December 1764, the son of Henry Lilliot (1735-?) and Mary Curtis (1727-?).  One of the Johns may have died aged 88 years in Portslade and have been buried on 23 May 1850 in Ashurst.

John and Zilpha had 2 sons and named them Peter and Henry.

  4. Henry Lilliot was baptised on 3 August 1768 in Ashurst.  He may have died as a child and have been buried as Henry Lilliot on 30 September 1779 in Ashurst.  There was another Henry Lilliot born 1770 in Ashurst.

  5. Anne Lilliot was baptised on 31 March 1771 in Ashurst.

  6. Thomas Lilliott was baptised on 13 February 1774 in Ashurst.  He may have been buried on 3 April 1803 in Ashurst, but the register only records his name.

As Thomas Lelyet he married Ann Harreden on 7 February 1798 in West Grinstead, at which time they were both of that parish.  The witnesses to their marriage were Peter Lelyet and William Gratwick.

Thomas and Ann had 3 known children:

    1. William Lilliot was baptised on 29 September 1799 in Wiston.

    2. Rebecca Lilliot was baptised on 27 September 1800 in Ashurst.  She was probably the infant Rebecca Lilliot who was buried in Ashurst on 19 September 1803.

    3. Anne Lilliot was baptised on 14 April 1803 in Ashurst.

  7. William Liliot was privately baptised on 23 October 1777 in Ashurst.  He married Mary Hammond in 1804. (They have their own page.)
