Nicholas LELLIOTT (1769-?)

and Ann SAWYER (c1770-1850)

 

Nicholas Lelliott and Ann Sawyer married on 1 January 1793 in New Shoreham, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  (They were not my direct ancestors, but they were the 4x Great Grandparents of Bob Lelliott.)

Nicholas Lelliott was baptised on 1 October 1769 in Henfield, Sussex.  The baptism register noted that he was the base born son of widow Jane Lilliott (c1730-?), who as Jane Slatter had married William Lilliot (1725-1766) in 1751.  (A database at Ancestry.co.uk has that he was born in 1763 and died in 1819, but the Henfield baptism register does not record a 1763 birth only his 1769 baptism.  I don't know where he was buried, although I am guessing, in Broadwater.)

Ann Sawyer's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 79 years on 9 January 1850 in Worthing (as per Roverman's Family Tree at Ancestry.co.uk).  Might she have been the daughter of Henry Sawyers and Ann Shelley who married on 27 March 1768 in New Shoreham?  Or maybe, John Sawyers and Sarah Roberts who married on 27 December 1764 in New Shoreham?

At the time of the 1841 census Ann was a 70 year old lodging housekeeper at Paragon Place in Broadwater.

 

Nicholas Lelliott and Ann Sawyers had 5 known children:

  1. Lancaster Lellyott was baptised on 29 September 1794 in New Shoreham.  He married Lucy Ward in 1817.  (They have their own page.)  He would seem to have been the first Lancaster, but where did the name come from?  Might it have been the surname of Nicholas's father?

  2. Henry Lellyott was baptised on 11 September 1796 in New Shoreham.  He married twice, firstly to Maria Williams in 1821 and then to Jane Bridger in 1835.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Ann Lelliott was baptised on 27 December 1798 in New Shoreham.  Might she have married David Miles on 22 April 1822 in Broadwater?  They were both then of Broadwater.

  4. Nicholas Peter Lelliott was baptised on 5 February 1809 in Broadwater.

    Nicholas Peter Lelliott married Mary Ann Harvey on 21 June 1832 in Broadwater.

    Nicholas Peter and Mary Ann had the following child:

    1. Sarah Lelliott was born on 18 September 1834 and baptised on 26 October 1834 at the Dorset Gardens Wesleyan Chapel in Brighton, Sussex.

  5. Priscilla Lelliott was born on 5 October 1810 and baptised on 9 December 1810 at the Independent Chapel in Broadwater.

    Priscilla married John Phillips on 1 July 1833 in Broadwater.
