John LELLIOTT
(1772-1846)
and Elizabeth CARTER (c1777-1864)

John Lelliot and Elizabeth Carter married on 11 October 1794
in Hangleton, Sussex. They were both then of Hangleton. (They were not
my direct ancestors.)
John Lelliott was baptised on 16
February 1772 in Woodmancote, Sussex. He was the son of John
Lillyot and Ann Thorpe. John died aged 76 years in Fulking
and was buried on 4 June 1846 in Edburton.
Elizabeth Carter was born about 1777
in Fulking, Sussex. She died aged 87 years in Hove, Sussex and was
buried on 12 June 1864 in Edburton.
In 1851, Elizabeth was a 74 year old widow and market gardener and she was
living at Clappers in Edburton. With her on census night were 2 of her
children, 2 grandchildren - 26 year old Louisa Lelliott and
8 year old Mary Jane Lelliott - and 19
year old servant Edward Steele.
John Lelliott and
Elizabeth Carter had 11 known children:
-
John Lellyett was baptised on 21 April 1795 in Edburton.
-
William Lellyett was baptised on 6 May 1798 in Edburton. In
1851 he was a 52 year old widower and market gardener, living with his
mother.
As
William Lelliott he married Elizabeth Morris on 12 April
1820 in Edburton.
-
Fanny Lellyett was baptised on 30 November 1800 in Edburton.
As Frances Lelliott she married James Burchell on 10
December 1823 in Edburton. He was then of Ashington, Sussex and she
of Edburton.
-
Hannah Lellyett was baptised on 21 November 1802 in Edburton.
Hannah may have married Henry Alderton on 17 November 1827 in Hove,
Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both
of Hove.
-
Sarah Lellyett was baptised on 26 May 1805 in Edburton.
As
Sarah Lelliott she married Edward Brown on 11 October 1827 in
Edburton.
-
Mary Lelliatt was baptised on 27 December 1807 in Edburton.
-
Martha Lelliot was baptised on 13 May 1810 in Edburton.
Martha
married William Jeal on 26 November 1836 in Brighton, Sussex.
He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.
-
Barbara Lelliott was baptised on 22
November 1812 in Edburton.
Barbara married John Graimes on 17 September 1834 at St. Nicholas
in Brighton, Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and
they were both of Brighton.
John was
born on 11 August 1813 at Mill House in Poynings and baptised on 26
September 1813 at Holy Trinity, Poynings. He was the son of James
Graimes and Elizabeth Reynolds. John was a wheelwright.
He died in 1885.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and their 3 sons were living
on Henfield Common in Henfield. John was then a journeyman
wheelwright.
In about 1843/4 the family moved to Patcham, Sussex
and lived next to the old Vicarage, Church Hill. When the 1881
census was recorded they were still living at Church Hill, Patcham, along
with son Charles and 10 year old grandson George Baker.
John and Barbara had 9 known
children, 8 of whom were:
-
Abraham Graimes was born about 1837 in Brighton. He was 4
years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 15 year old farm labourer.

-
James Henry Grames was born on 6
December 1840 and baptised
on 3 January 1841 at St. Peter's in Woodmancote, Sussex. The 1841
census records that he was 5 month old John Graimes, but this
must have been an error as his elder brother was also named John.
In 1851 he was a 10 year old farm labourer.
As James Henry
Graimes he married
Caroline Stillaway on 13 November 1880 at St. Peter's in
Brighton, Sussex. He was then 38 years old and she 34. Their
fathers were named as John Graimes and James Stillaway.
Caroline was born on 9 April 1846 and baptised on 14
June 1846 in Henfield, Sussex and was the daughter of
James Stillaway (1817-1885) and
Hetty Elliott (1820-1899).
When the 1881 census was
recorded the couple were living at 12 Lorne Road, Preston, Sussex and
James was a wheelwright. By 1901 they were living at 1 Viaduct
Road, Brighton and James was a furniture porter.
James and
Caroline had 4 known children:
-
Charles James Henry Graimes was baptised on 29 January 1882 at
St. Peter's in Brighton..
-
Catherine Daisy Graimes was born in 1883.
-
Frederick Edward Percy Graimes was born in 1886.
-
Lily Florence Graimes was born in 1888.
-
Elizabeth Ellen Graimes was born about 1843 in Patcham, Sussex.
When the 1851 census was recorded she was 8 years old and living at
home.
She married Samuel Baker on 25 March 1864 at St. Nicholas,

Elizabeth was then a widow living at 5 Westgate Street or Lane in Lewes.
Samuel and Elizabeth had the following children:

Elizabeth Baker was born about 1866 in Lewes.
-
Louisa Amy Barbara Baker was baptised on 20 June 1869 at St.

George Baker was born about 1871 in Lewes. He seems to have
been recorded twice in the 1881 census, with his mother and his maternal
grandparents.
-
Henry Baker was born about 1873 in Lewes and baptised on 27 May
1875 at All Saints in Lewes.
-
Charles William Graimes was baptised on 4 January 1846 in

-
Louisa Graimes was born about 1858 in Patcham. She was 3
years old when the 1851 census was recorded.
-
James Lelliott may have been part of this family.
He died aged 23 years in Fulking and was buried on 14 July 1838 in
Edburton, therefore, he was born about 1815.
-
Henry Lelliott was born about 1817 in
Edburton.
Henry married
Eliza Dunton on 9 February 1841 in Brighton.
Eliza was
baptised on 4 October 1818 in Bolney, Sussex and was the daughter of
John Dunton (1784-?) and
Elizabeth Tullett (1787-?).
Henry and Eliza had 2 known
children:
-
Eliza Ann Lelliott was baptised on 24 April 1842 in
Hurstpierpoint. At the time of her baptism her father was a
labourer.
