James LELLIOT (1760-1843)

and Mary GOBLE (c1766-1846)

 

James Lelliot and Mary Goble married by banns on 15 December 1786 at the parish church of St. Peters in Henfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster of Shermanbury, Sussex.    The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Woolven and William Vinall.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  James was the great nephew of my 6x great grandfather.)

James Lilliot was born on 12 January 1760 and baptised on 3 February 1760 in Henfield.  He was the son of William Lilliot (1725-1766) and Jane Slatter (c1730-?).  He was buried on 18 August 1843 in Henfield.

Mary Goble was born about 1766.  She was buried on 17 October 1846 in Henfield.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living alone at Stone Pit in Henfield and James was then said to be a bargeman.

 

James Lelliot and Mary Goble had 7 or 8 known children:

  1. Jane Lelliot was baptised privately, because she was ill, on 17 March 1787 in Henfield.  She was received into the church on 6 May.

  2. James Lelliott was baptised on 8 February 1789 in Henfield.  He was buried on 29 September 1823 in Henfield.

    James may have married Catherine Woolgar on 17 November 1816 in Henfield, but there was another James Lelliott (his cousin) who was baptised on 11 January 1789 in Henfield.

  3. Mary Lelliot was baptised on 2 January 1791 in Henfield.

  4. Thomas Lelliott was baptised on 2 December 1792 in Henfield.  He was buried on 14 October 1853 in Henfield.

  5. Sarah Lelliot was baptised on 8 March 1795 in Henfield.

  6. Henry Lelliott was batpised on 30 April 1797 in Henfield.  He died aged 77 years and his death was registered as Henry Lelliott in the second quarter of 1874 in the Steyning registration district.

    As a widower Henry Lelliott married Jane Hilliary on 27 April 1833 in New Shoreham, Sussex.  She was a spinster and they were both of New Shoreham.

    Jane was born about 1811/2 in Sunderland, Durham.

    The 1841 census records that 35 year old Henry Lelliott and his 29 year old wife Jane were living in Buckingham Street, New Shoreham, along with their 5 daughters.  He was then a bargeman.

    In 1851, Henry was a 46 year old bargeman and gave his place of birth as Henfield.  Jane was 42 and said she was born in Sunderland, Durham.  The couple and their 9 children were living in Little Pond House, New Shoreham.

    Henry again said he was born in Henfield in the 1861 census and this time he was a 66 year old bargeman, i.e. born about 1795.  Jane was then said to have been 49 years old and said she was born in Sunderland, Durham.  The couple were living in Church Street, New Shoreham along with 4 of their children.

    In 1871, Henry was 77 years old, born in Henfield and a bargeman.  Jane was then 60.  They were living in Cavendish Place, New Shoreham along with their 2 sons Henry and Thomas.

    Henry and Jane had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Lelliott was born on 7 September 1833 in Shoreham and baptised there at the Countess of Huntingdon's chapel on 23 February 1835.  She was 8 years old in 1841.  The 1851 census records that Betsey Lelliott was 19 years old.

    2. Jane Lelliott was born on 27 January 1835 in Shoreham and baptised there at the Countess of Huntingdon's chapel on 23 February 1835.  She was 6 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was said to have been 14 years old.

    3. Mary Lelliott was born about 1836 in Shoreham.  She was 5 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was said to have been 15 years old.

    4. Hannah Lelliott was born about 1837 in Shoreham.  She was 4 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was 13 years old.  The 1861 census records that she was 24 years old and the eldest of her siblings living at home.

    5. Sarah Lelliott was born about 1839 in Shoreham.  At the time of the 1841 census she was 2 years old.  The 1851 census records that she was 10 years old.

    6. Henry Lelliott was born about 1844 in Shoreham.  He was 7 years old in 1851.  He was 20 years old in 1861 and living at home.

    7. Maria Lelliott was born about 1846 in Shoreham.  She was 5 years old in 1851.  The 1861 census records she was 18 years old.

    8. Eliza Lelliott was born about 1847 in Shoreham.  She was 4 years old in 1851.

    9. Thomas Lelliott was born in 1850 in Shoreham.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was 5 months old.  In 1861 he was 10 years old.

  7. William Lelliott was baptised on 19 May 1799 in Henfield.  He died aged 87 years in Small Dole and was buried on 16 November 1885 in Upper Beeding.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was an 81 year old widower and living alone in Small Dole.  His place of birth was then recorded as Henfield and he was a late agricultural labourer.

    William married Sarah Keywood on 4 December 1824 in Henfield.

    Sarah was born about 1802 and was the daughter of William Keywood and Ann.  She died/was buried on 28 September 1843 in Henfield.

    When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in Stone Pit, Henfield (next door to his parents) and William was a 40 year old bargeman.  In 1851, William was a 49 year old widower and bargeman, living in Small Dole with 2 of his daughters.  Their next door neighbours were the family of John Caplin.

    William and Sarah had 12 known children:

    1. Caroline Lelliott was baptised on 3 April 1825 in Henfield.  She was an unmarried 27 year old housekeeper in 1851 and living with her father.

    2. Elizabeth Lelliott was baptised on 18 June 1826 in Henfield.

    3. Thomas Lelliott was baptised on 20 January 1842 in Henfield.  He was 14 years old in 1841.

    4. Sarah Anne Lelliott was baptised on 19 April 1829 in Henfield.

    5. Caelia Lelliott was baptised on 22 August 1830 in Henfield.  She was 12 years old in 1841.

    6. Jane Lelliott was baptised on 1 January 1832 in Henfield. was 10 years old in 1841.

    7. Eliza Lelliott was baptised on 26 May 1833 in Henfield.  She was 8 years old in 1841.

    8. Mary Lelliott was baptised on 12 October 1834 in Henfield.  She was 6 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was 17 years old and living with her father.

    9. William Lelliott was baptised on 30 October 1836 in Henfield.  He was 4 years old in 1841.

    10. James Lelliott was born on 12 April 1838 and baptised on 10 June 1838 in Henfield.  He was 3 years old in 1841.

    11. Alfred Lelliott was born on 25 February 1840 and baptised on 8 March 18040 in Henfield.  He was a year old in 1841.

    12. Albert Lelliott was born on 12 March 1842 and baptised on 12 June 1842 in Henfield.

  8. John Lelliott may have been part of this family.  He was born about 1803-7 in Henfield.

    As a widower he married Charlotte Stillaway on 5 May 1842 in Henfield.  John was then a bargeman.  His father was named as James Lelliott who was also a bargeman.

    Charlotte was baptised on 24 December 1815 in Henfield and was the daughter of William Stillaway (1774-1818) and Elizabeth (c1770-1846).
