James LILLYOTT
(1745-1820)
and Sarah BISHOP (c1750-?)

James
Lillyott and
Sarah Bishop married on
5 April 1771 in Newtimber, Sussex. (They were not
my direct ancestors, but James was the brother of my 5x Great Grandfather,
Samuel Lillyott.)
James Lillyott was
baptised on 2 April 1745 in Woodmancote, Sussex. He was the son of
Thomas Lyllyot
(c1705-1765) and
Bridget Purvey (1709-1778). He died aged 75 years and was
buried on 19 June 1820 in Newtimber, Sussex.
Sarah Bishop's date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
James Lillyott and Sarah
Bishop had 2 known children:

James
Lilliot was baptised on 14 October
1774 in Newtimber, Sussex.

Sarah
Lilliot was baptised on 30 March
1777 in Newtimber. She died in 1822.
Sarah married George
Coles on 21 January 1797 in Newtimber. He was then a bachelor
and she a spinster and they were both of Newtimber.
George was born about 1764
and died in 1815.
George and Sarah had 9
known children:

John Coles was baptised on 29 November
1797 in Newtimber and died there in 1852.
John married Catherine
Groves on 9 May 1820 in Henfield.
Catherine was born about 1800 in
Steyning and may have been baptised as
Kitty
Groves on 9 November 1800 in Steyning, the daughter of
Richard Groves (1774-?) and
Mary
Fowler. Catherine died in 1855 in Brighton.
John and Catherine had 6 known children:

Mary Ann Coles was baptised on 11 March 1821 in Newtimber.
She married Thomas Nell on 24 August 1845 in Newtimber.
The couple had 2 known children.

John Coles was baptised on 29 December 1822 in Newtimber.
She married Jemima sometime before or about 1858. The
couple had 1 known daughter.

Sarah Coles was baptised on 3 January
1825 in Newtimber. Sarah married
William Alfrey
on 19 October 1851 in Hurstpierpoint as his second wife. She
died on 6 October 1852 and her cause of death was phthisis (i.e.
tuberculosis) 8 months. Her death was registered by Catherine
Cole who was present at the death and who made her mark.

Frederick Coles was born on 6
November and baptised on 2 December 1827 in Newtimber. He he
married twice. Firstly to
Philadelpha Eliza Wood
in 1853 in Keymer and then
Ann West Adams
in 1864 in Clayton. (They have their own page.)

James Coles was born about 1831 in Newtimber.

Elizabeth Coles was born on 16 February and baptised on 27
February 1850 in Newtimber. She married James Bowley on 9
Mary 1853 in Pyecombe, Sussex. The couple had 1 known son.

George Coles was baptised on 18 November 1798 in Newtimber.
George married Sarah before or about 1820.
In 1841 the family were living in St. Nicholas Lane in the All Saints
district of Lewes. George was then a tailor journeyman. Also
with them on census night was 80 year old Mary Costin.
When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in the High
Street in the parish of St. Anne's in Lewes, Sussex. George was
then a 52 year old tailor journeyman and Sarah was 54 years old and gave
her place of birth as Lewes. Also with them were 3 of their
children and 7 year old grandson, George Coles.
George and Sarah had 7 known
children:

Sarah Ann Coles was born about 1820. She was 20 years old
in 1841 and living in the partenal home.

George Coles was born about 1822 in Lewes. He was said to
have been 15 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 29 year old
widower living with his parents. Like his father he was then a
tailor journeyman.

Elizabeth Coles was born about 1829. She was 12 years old
in 141.

Naomi Coles was born about 1831. In 1841 she was 10 years
old.

Samuel Coles was born about 1833. He was 8 years old in
1841.

Mercy Coles was born about 1836 in Lewes. In 1841 she was
5 years old She was 15 years old in 1851.

Susanna Coles was born about 1840 in Lewes. At the time
of the 1841 census she was a year old. Susan was an 11
year old scholar in 1851.

Frederick Coles was baptised on 23 September 1800 in Newtimber.

Caroline Coles was baptised on 28 November 1802 in Newtimber.

William Coles was baptised on 20 January 1804 in Newtimber.
-
James Coles was baptised on 25 December 1804 in Newtimber.

Sarah Coles was baptised on 3 August 1805 in Newtimber.

Mary Anne Coles was born on 23 November 1808 and baptised on 8
January 1809 in Newtimber.

Thomas Coals was baptised on 4 February 1810 in Newtimber and
died there in 1818.
