Ancestors of Mandy Willard

Henry LYLLIOTT (c1635-1681)

and Mary (c1640-1681)

Henry Lylliott and Mary were most probably my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married sometime before or about 1661, but no possible marriage has been found for them in either the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index or the IGI.  They settled in Shermanbury, Sussex in 1663 and it is likely they arrived there with a young son.

Henry Lylliott's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been baptised on 24 February 1638/9 in Aldingbourne, Sussex, and have been the son of William Leliet and Mary Stronge.  Or, might he have been a grandson of William Lilliat and Esther Parsons?  Henry died before 21 September 1686 as on that day Administration of his estate, which was valued at £5:10s, was granted to his son William Lylliot of Shermanbury.  Henry's wife appears to have had twin's baptised on 26 February 1680/1, and a William Lelliot was buried in Shermanbury on 2 February 1680/1.  Was the name William wrongly recorded and might the burial have been of Henry?

Mary's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Mary Lelliot was buried on 5 March 1680/1 in Shermanbury.

As the couple appear to have died in 1681, who took care of their children?  In March 1681 their children were aged about 4, 7, 9, 12, 17 and 19.

Henry Lylliott and Mary had 8 known children:

1. William Lilliot, my 7x Great Grandfather, married Mary Copper in 1688.  (They have there own page.)

2. Thomas Lilliot was baptised on 26 April 1663 in Shermanbury, the son of Henry.  He may have been the Thomas Lelliot who married Mary Leach in 1695.  They married and settled in Sompting, Sussex.  I am not at all sure Shermanbury Thomas was the one who went to Sompting.  (They have their own page.)

3. Philip Lilliot was baptised on 14 April 1668 in Shermanbury, the son of Henry.

4. Mary Lilliot was baptised on 17 July 1670 in Shermanbury, the daughter of Henry.  Did she marry Benjamin Turner on 20 May 1704 in Billingshurst, Sussex?

5. Elizabeth Lilliot was baptised on 1 or 7 April 1673 in Shermanbury, the daughter of Henry.  She was buried on 8 July 1709 in Cowfold.

   Elizabeth married John Willett on 5 March 1701/2 in Shermanbury.  At the time she was of Cowfold.

   John was baptised on 6 November 1677 in Shermanbury and was the son of John Williot.  John or his son may have been buried on 22 December 1747 in Cowfold, but unfortunately the burial register only records the name.

   John and Elizabeth had 3 known children:

   1. John Willet was baptised on 21 February 1702/3 in Cowfold.  He died aged 86 years and was buried on 6 February 1789 in Cowfold.

      John married Anne Aylwood on 2 July 1728 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was then of Cowfold and she of Bolney.

      Ann was baptised on 24 May 1707 in Bolney and was the daughter of William Aylwood and Ann.

      John and Ann had the following children:

      1. Penelope Willett was baptised on 20 June 1729 in Cowfold.  She married William Tidy on 20 October 1764 in Bolney.  William was baptised on 2 February 1746/7 in Bolney and was the son of William Tidy and Elizabeth Etheridge.

      2. Ann Willett was baptised on 17 November 1730 in Cowfold.

         Ann married Thomas Morris on 8 May 1753 in Cowfold.

         Thomas was baptised on 14 April 1732 in Bolney and was the son of Thomas Morris and Elizabeth Moor.  He was buried on 8 May 1812 in Cowfold.

         Thomas and Ann had 8 known children:

         1. John Morris

         2. Ann Morris

         3. Susannah Morris

         4. Sarah Morris

         5. James Morris

         6. Charles Morris

         7. William Morris

      3. Mary Willett was baptised on 31 January 1732/3 in Cowfold.  She married John Mitchel on 16 June 1754 in West Grinstead.

      4. John Willett may have been part of this family.  He died aged 96 years and was buried on 20 September 1828 in Cowfold.  John married Ann Fayers by banns on 3 June 1762 in Cowfold.  They were both then of Cowfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Gratwicke Weeks and Jane Worsfold.  Ann died aged 84 years and was buried on 14 February 1819 in Cowfold.  The burial register recorded that she was the wife of John Willett.

      5. Sarah Willett was baptised on 14 November 1736 in Cowfold.  She married John Field on 7 April 1763 in Cowfold.

      6. Susan Willett was baptised on 27 May 1739 in Cowfold.  She was buried on 2 August 1786 in Bolney.  She married William Gadford on 5 August 1763 in Bolney.  William was buried on 2 October 1786 in Bolney.

      7. James Willett was baptised on 9 April 1742 in Cowfold.

      8. Christian Willett (daughter) was baptised on 1 January 1743/4 in Cowfold.

      9. Thomas Willett was baptised on 13 October 1745 in Cowfold.  He may have died aged 83 years (as per the burial register) and have been buried on 16 February 1825 in Cowfold.

         Thomas married Mary Moor on 27 May 1663 in Cowfold.

         Mary was baptised on 5 July 1752 in Cowfold and was the daughter of Thomas Moor (1729-1809) and Mary Voice (c1731-1815).

      10. Elizabeth Willett was baptised on 20 March 1747/8 in Cowfold.  She married Edward Botten on 30 January 1777 in Cowfold.  (They have their own page.)

   2. Penelope Willet was baptised on 17 May 1705 in Cowfold.  She married Thomas Dove of Henfield on 31 March 1730 in Cowfold.

   3. Elizabeth Willet was baptised on 10 November 1707 in Cowfold.

6. John Lilliot was baptised on 30 April 1676 in Shermanbury, the son of Henry and Mary.  John Lilliot the elder was buried on 14 October 1712 in Shermanbury.  (The younger John was probably his nephew.)

   John may have married Sarah before 1707 and possibly before 1702 and then Mary before 1712.  Or he may have been the John Lelliott who had settled in Sompting, Sussex by 1695, but I think this unlikely.

   At the quarter sessions of 6/7 October 1701 held at Midhurst, John Lilliott was sent by JP's order from Shermanbury to Henfield, but the order was set aside and was to be returned to Shermanbury.

   John had 4 known children:

   1. John Lelliot was baptised on 4 December 1702 in Shermanbury, the son of John.  He was buried in Shermanbury on 3 October 1708.

   2. William Lelliot was baptised on 18 February 1706/7 in Shermanbury, the son of John and Sarah.

      As William Lilliott of Cowfold he most probably married Susan Mazzel on 16 September 1627 in Albourne.  Susan was then of that parish.

      Susanna Muzzell was baptised on 2 February 1704/5 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, the daughter of Abraham Muzzell and Susan Wrenn.

      A removal order was issued on 6 October 1727 to Susannah Lilliot and her 1 month old daughter Rebecca, removing them from Albourne to Cowfold.  It was noted that her husband William had run away.  Rebecca's reputed father was not named.  Then on 13 May 1728 a removal order was issued to Robert Muzzell and Susannah Lilhot, the mother of a bastard child, removing them from Alborne to Cowfold.  Another removal order was issued on 14 July 1735 returning Susannah Lilliott to Cowfold from West Grinstead.  Then at the Horsham quarter sessions of 10/11 July 1738, Susan and her children Susan, Abraham and James were removed from Nuthurst to Cowfold.

      Susan had the following children:

      1. Rebecca Muzzal was baptised on 16 September 1727 in Albourne.

         Rebecca married Joseph Sharp on 10 September 1744 in Hurstpierpoint.

      2. Susan Lilliot was baptised on 11 July 1731 in Cowfold, the daughter of Susan.  Before her marriage she had 2 sons:

         1. John Lillyot was baptised on 5 January 1747/8 in Cowfold

         2. Thomas Lillyot was baptised on 5 January 1747/8 in Cowfold, and buried there on 5 February 1747/8.  Thomas and John's supposed father was Thomas Stanford.

         Susan married Thomas Stamford on 30 March 1749 in Cowfold.  He was from Beeding.

      3. Abraham Lilliatt was baptised on 2 May 1735 in West Grinstead, the son of William and Susan from Cowfold.

      4. James Lilliott

   3. Sarah Lelliot was baptised on 25 May 1709 in Shermanbury, the daughter of John and Sarah.

   4. John Lilliot was baptised on 17 April 1712 in Shermanbury, the son of John and Mary.

7. Sarah Lelliot was baptised and buried on 26 February 1680/1 in Shermanbury, the twin daughter of Mary.

8. Anne Lelliot was baptised and buried on 26 February 1680/1 in Shermanbury, the twin daughter of Mary.
