George LELLIOTT (1842-1900)

and Lydia MORRISON (c1852-1917)

George Lelliott and Lydia Morrison married sometime before or about 1868/9.  (They were not my direct ancestors, but they were the Great Grandparents of Bob Lelliott.)

George Lelliott was born on 13 July 1842 in Worthing, Sussex and baptised on 31 July 1842 in Broadwater, Sussex.  He was the illegitimate son of Emily Lelliott.  His death was registered as 58 year old George Benjamin Lelliott in the third quarter of 1900 in the Chichester registration district.  George's mother married Benjamin Beaman Kemburly in 1847 and again in 1849 when his name was recorded as Benjamin Cemery.  In the fourth quarter of 1883, George was most probably a witness to the marriage of Seth Potter and Catherine Emily Cemery, in Aldershot.  Catherine was the daughter of Benjamin Cemery and his second wife Amelia Francis.

Lydia Morrison was born about 1852 in Nova Scotia, Canada.  She died in 1917.

The 1871 census records that 21 year old Lydia and her 2 sons were living at Lower Bridge Street, Married Soldiers Quarter in Chester.  Her husband was then on guard.  Her place of birth was then given as Scotland.  When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Chichester Barracks in Chichester, Sussex.  George was then a Colour Sergeant with the Royal Sussex Militia.  By 1891 the family had moved to 1 Olden Terrace in Oving Road, Oving, Sussex and George was a 48 year old retired soldier.  Lydia was then a 39 year old laundress.  Lydia was a 49 year old widow when the 1901 census was recorded and she was living on her own means at 83 Grove Road in Rumboldswhyke, Chichester.  Her 2 youngest sons were also living with her at that time.

George Lelliott and Lydia Morrison had 11 known children:

1. George Arthur W. Lelliott was born about 1868/9 in Dublin, Ireland.  In 1871 he was 2 years old.  He was a 12 year old scholar in 1881.

   George married Laura Louise McDonald in 1897.

   Laura was born in 1868 and died in 1915.

   They had the following known children:

   1. Eileen Lelliott (1897-1987)

   2. Donald Lelliott was born in 1900.  He married Annie Gothorpe in 1938.

   3. George James C Lelliott (1902-1986)

   4. Lydia Lelliott (1905-1986)

2. William Francis Lelliott was born in the fourth quarter of 1870 in Chester, Cheshire.  At the the time of the 1871 census he was 5 months old.  He was a 10 year old scholar in 1881. 

3. Oswald Ernest Lelliott was born about 1873 in Woolwich, Kent.  In 1881 he was an 8 year old scholar.  He died in 1903.

   Oswald married Henrietta Jane Hooker.

   Henrietta was born in 1878 and died in 1902.

   Oswald and Henrietta had the following children:

   1. Oswald George Lelliott (1898-1978)

   2. Henrietta Cecelia Lelliott (1898-1944)

4. Walter Sydney was born about 1875 in Ireland.  He was a 6 year old scholar in 1881.

   Walter married Elizabeth Annie Eva Dean in 1895.

   Elizabeth was born in 1871 and died in 1942.

   Walter and Elizabeth had the following known children:

   1. Frederick Arthur Lelliott was born in 1896 in Radnor, Wales.  He died in 1974.

   2. Walter George Lelliott was born in the third quarter of 1897 in Liverpool, Lancashire.  He died aged 18 years on 31 May 1916.  He was then an Able Seaman on board HMS Queen Mary, service number J/20278.  His parents were then living at 32 Salisbury Road in Dover, Kent.

   3. Eunice Nora M. Lelliott was born in the third quarter of 1900 in Langsett, Yorkshire.

   4. Charles Henry D. Lelliott (1908-1998)

   5. Mary Adelaide Lelliott (1910-?)

5. Amy Louisa Lelliott was born about 1877 in Ireland.  When the 1881 census was recorded she was 4 years old.  In 1891 she was a 14 year old laundress and the eldest of her siblings living at home.  Her death was registered in the first quarter of 1957.

6. Lancaster Lelliott was born in 1879 in Chichester.  In 1881 he was 2 years old.  He was a 12 year old scholar in 1891.  When the 1901 census was recorded he was an unmarried 22 year old Corporal in the Lancaster Regiment and he was then visiting the home of 63 year old Henry Lelliott and his 62 year old wife, Louisa Lelliott at 4 New Street in Worthing.

   Lancaster married Katherine Jones on 27 July 1907 in Portsea.  He was then a 28 year old seaman of HMS Fisgard.  Katheine was 29 years old and living at 74 Sultan Road, Landport, Portsmouth  Their fathers were named as George Benjamin Lelliott a pensioner and William Jones a pickle manufacturer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Annie Morris and Harry Leonard Gray.

   Lancaster and Katherine had the following children:

   1. Benjamin Lelliott (1909-1992)

   2. Leonard Lancaster Lelliott (1910-1971)

7. Herbert Lelliott was born about 1881 in Chichester.  He was a 10 year old scholar in 1891.  Herbert died in 1906 in Calcutta, India.

8. Amelia Lelliott was born and died in the second quarter of 1883.

9. Cecilia Lelliott was born about 1885 in Chichester.  In 1881 she was a 6 year old scholar.  She died in 1916.

   Cecilia married Salisbury Hamilton Simpson in the second quarter of 1907 in the Plymouth, Devon registration district.

10. Frederick Charles Lelliott was born about 1887 in Chichester.  He was a 4 year old scholar in 1891.  In 1901 he was a 14 year old grocer's assistant.  Frederick died on 25 May 1915.  At the time he was a Company Serjeant Major in the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), 1st Battalion.  His name is listed on panel 12 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.  His service number was 8073.

    Frederick married Alice Maud A. B. Joplin in the first quarter of 1915 in the Portsmouth registration district.

    Alice was born in 1889 in Portsea, Hampshire and died in 1963.

11. Basil Lelliott was born about 1888 in Chichester.  In 1881 he was 3 years old.  He was 13 years old when the 1901 census was recorded.  He died aged 27 years on 8 May 1915.  At the time he was a Lance Corporal in the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), 2nd Battalion and husband of Elizabeth Ward (formerly Lelliott) of 11 Vincent Villas, Albert Street, St. Heliers, Jersey.  His name is listed on panel 12 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.  His service number was 10133.

    Basil married Elizabeth Le Maistre Journeaux.

    Basil and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Oswald Herbert Lelliott (1911-1969)

    2. Basil Lelliott (1913-1976)
