Edward LELLIOTT
(1815-1878)
and Jane GOACHER (1817-1895)

Edward Lelliott and Jane Gocher married on
14 May 1837 in Ashurst, Sussex. He was a bachelor and she a spinster.
The witnesses to their marriage were James Pelling and
Elizabeth Pelling. (They were not my direct
ancestors.)
Edward Lilliot was baptised on 17 September 1815 in Ashurst, Sussex.
He was the son of William
Lilliot (1777-?) and
Mary Hammond
(c1780-?). Edward died aged 63 years and his death was registered in
the fourth quarter of 1878 in the Steyning registration district.
Jane Goacher was baptised on 24 August 1817 in Ashurst,
Sussex. She was the daughter of
James Goacher and Ann Parsons. Jane died aged 77 years
and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1895 in the Steyning
registration district.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and their 3 children were
living at Peppers Cottage in Ashurst.
In 1851 the couple and 8
children were living at Lower Peppers in Ashurst. Edward was then a
35 year old agricultural labourer and Jane was 33.
By 1861 the couple
and 5 children were living in Edburton Village, Sussex.
In 1871
Edward and Jane and 2 children were living at the Blue Anchor in Henfield
and he was an agricultural labourer. The next property on the
census enumerators route was on Oreham Cottage, which was occupied by the
family of my 2x great grandfather,
Charles
Dowlen.
By 1881 Jane was a widow and living on Henfield
Common with 2 of her children.
In 1891 Jane was 73 years old and
living with her son Henry on The Common in Henfield.
Edward Lelliott and Jane Goacher had
10 known children:

James Lilliot was baptised on 25 March 1838 in Portslade, Sussex.
He was 3 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 13 year old farmers
labourer.
James married
Harriet Stenning on 22 October 1864 in Henfield,
Sussex. They were both then of full age and of Henfield and were
both able to sign their names. James was a bachelor and labourer
and Harriet a spinster. Their fathers were named as Edward
Lelliott a labourer and James Stenning who was also a
labourer. The witnesses to their marriage were James Stenning
and Ann Lelliott who both made their marks.
Harriet was baptised on 9 July 1843 in Bolney, Sussex and was the
daughter of James Stenning and Barbara Penfold.
At the time of the 1871 census the couple and 3 children were living at
1 Cripps Cottage, Hurstpierpoint. James was a 33 year old
agricultural labourer and Harriet was 28. Also with the family was
65 year old widow and mother-in-law, Barbara Stenning,
who said she was born in Cuckfield, and 26 year old unmarried brother,
Alfred Lelliott.
When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and 3 children were living
at Cripps Cottage in Hurstpierpoint. James was then a 43 year old
agricultural labourer and Harriet was 38. Also with the family was
49 year old widower and lodger, Peter Matthews.
James and Harriet had the following children:

James Lelliott was born about 1866 in Twineham, Sussex.
He was 5 years old in 1871.

Kate Lelliott was baptised on 5 April 1868 in
Hurstpierpoint. In 1871 she was 3 years old.

Barbara Lelliott was baptised on 6 March 1870 in
Hurstpierpoint. When the 1871 census was recorded she was a year
old. She was an 11 year old scholar in 1881.

Mary Ann Lelliott was baptised on 3 January 1873 in
Hurstpierpoint. In 1881 she was an 8 year old scholar.

Albert Lelliott was born about 1876 in Hurstpierpoint.
He was a 5 year old scholar in 1881.
Albert married Mary Ellen Sharp in the fourth quarter
of 1900 in the Steyning registration district.
Mary Ellen was born about 1877 in Brighton, Sussex.
When the 1911 census was recorded, the couple and their son were living
at 58 Hamilton Road, Preston, Sussex. Albert was then a 35 year
old Railway Clerk Room Porter and Mary Ellen was 34.
Albert and Mary Ellen had 1 known son:

Albert Leslie Lelliott was born on 26 March 1902 in
Brighton. He died aged 91 years and his death was registered
in September 1993 in the Eastbourne registration district. At
the time of the 1911 census he was a 9 year old scholar.

Henry Lelliott was baptised on 3 November 1839 in Ashurst.
He was a year old in 1841. In 1851 he was 11 years old. In
1861 he was an unmarried 21 year old agricultural labourer living at
home. In 1881 he was an unmarried 41 year old living at home with
his mother and younger sister. He was the head of the household in
1891, living on The Common in Henfield. He was then an unmarried
51 year old agricultural labourer living with his mother and 57 year old
widow Catherine Akehurst.

Ann Lelliott was baptised on 16 May 1841 in Ashurst. She
was 2 months old when the 1841 census was recorded. In 1851 she
was a 9 year old scholar. She died aged 17 years and was buried on
25 July 1858 in Ashurst.

Richard Lelliott was baptised on 4 June 1843 in Ashurst. He
was a 7 year old scholar in 1851. He died aged 14 years and was
buried on 7 September 1857 in Ashurst.

Alfred Lelliott was baptised on 6 October 1844 in Ashurst.
He was 5 years old in 1851. In 1871 he was an unmarried 26 year
old agricultural labourer and living with the family of his brother
James.

Eleanor Lelliott was baptised on 13 December 1846 in Ashurst.
She was 4 years old in 1851. In 1861 she was 14 years old.
In 1881 she was an unmarred 34 year living at home with her mother and
elder brother.

Edwin Lelliott was baptised on 10 September 1848 in Ashurst. He died in March 1936 in Cuckfield.
In 1851 he was 2 years old. He was a 12 year old scholar in 1861.
In 1871 he was an unmarried 21 year old agricultural labourer living at
home with his parents and younger sister.

Alice Lelliott was born in 1880.

Leonard Lelliott was baptised on 23 February 1851 in Ashurst.
When the 1851 census was recorded he was 2 months old. In 1861 he
was a 10 year old scholar.

Sarah Lelliott was baptised on 4 September 1853 in Ashurst.
She was a 7 year old scholar in 1861. In 1871 she was 17 years old
and living at home.

Emily Lelliott was baptised on 15 July 1855 in Ashurst. She
died aged 15 months and was buried on 15 September 1856 in Ashurst.
