Aaron LILIOT (1815-1853)

and Anne GOACHER (1812-1894)

Aaron Lelliott and Anne Goacher married by banns on 2 June 1836 in Wiston, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster from Washington.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Goacher and Mary Goacher.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Aaron Lilliat was baptised on 22 January 1815 in Wiston.  He was the son of Aaron Liliot (1791-1835) and Ann Wooldrige (1770-1850).  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.  Aaron was buried on 20 March 1853 in Wiston.

Ann Goacher was baptised on 3 May 1812 in Washington, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Goacher and Mary Terry.  Ann died aged 82 years and was buried on 30 October 1894 in Wiston.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 4 children (Aaron, William, Ann and Jane) were living at Buddington in Wiston.  They were both said to be 25 years old and Aaron was a labourer.  Their surname was spelt Lelliott.  Also with the family was John Dyer, Daniel Barns and William Gates who were all carpenters.

In 1851 the couple and 6 children (Aaron, William, Mary Ann, Jane, Charlotte and Harriet) were living at Lower Buttington in Wiston.  Aaron was a 36 year old farm labourer from Wiston and Ann was 39 and born in Washington.

The 1861 census recorded that Anne Lelliott was a 49 year old widow and living in Water Lane, Wiston.  Also with her was her daughter Harriett.

In 1871 Ann Lelliott was a 59 year old widow and housewife, born Washington and living alone at Long Backs Cottage in Wiston.  She may have shared this property with 81 year old Mary Longley, a widow and housewife from Newhaven, and also the family of 28 year old Peter Lelliott born in Wiston.  (Peter, born 1842, was a great grandson of Samuel Lillyot (1748-1817) and Elizabeth Serjeant (1748-?), whilst 1815 Aaron was their grandson.)

The 1881 census notes Anne Lelliott was a 70 year old widow and charwoman from Washington and living alone at 2 Longbacks Cottage, Wiston.

When the 1891 census was recorded 78 year old widow Ann Lelliott was  living alone at Long Backs in Wiston.
