Aaron LILIOT (1791-1835)

and Ann WOOLDRIDGE (1770-1850)

Aron Lilliot and Ann Barnet, widow, married by banns on 15 May 1814 in Shipley, Sussex.  They were both of Shipley and both made their X marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ann Lilliot (mark) and John Tomson (signed) - I think that's his surname, but it is difficult to read his signature.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Aaron was the brother of my 4x Great Grandmother.)  As Ann Wooldridge she had previously married William Barnet by licence on 19 August 1798 in Wiston.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Wooldridge and James Simmons.  Their marriage licence was issued on 11 August by the Archdeaconry of Chichester and noted that William was a 23 year old widower and farmer, and Ann was a 28 year old spinster.  They were both of Wiston.  William may have previously married Elizabeth Botting by banns on 6 October 1795 in Ashurst, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor of West Grinstead and she a spinster of Ashurst.

Aaron Liliot was baptised on 19 June 1791 in Wiston, Sussex.  He was the son of Samuel Lillyot (1748-1817) and Elizabeth Serjeant (1748-?).  Aaron died aged 43 years and was buried on 7 February 1835 in Wiston.

Ann Wooldrigde was baptised on 19 October 1770 in Westbourne, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Wooldridge and Ann.  Ann may have died aged 75 years and have been buried on 12 June 1850 in Wiston, making her birth about 1775.  The burial register recorded her name as Ann Lelliott.

In 1841 an Ann Lelliott aged 65 was living in the home of 45 year old Charles Peachy and his 40 year old wife Ann at Bunkton in the parish of Ashington.  (Charles Peachey married Ann Davey on 18 January 1820 in Twineham, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Twineham.  The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Pickett and Sarah Peachey.)

Aaron Liliot and Ann Wooldridge had 1 known child:

  1. Aaron Lilliat was baptised on 22 January 1815 in Wiston.  He married Anne Goacher in 1836.  (They have their own page.)

William Barnet and Ann Wooldridge had 3 known children:

  1. William Barnett was baptised on 10 October 1798 in Steyning.  He may have married Barbara Barnett on 22 May 1820 in Steyning.  He was then of Ashurst.

  2. Harriet Barnet was baptised on 20 September 1801 in Ashington.

As Harriet Barnett she married Thomas Whittington by banns on 2 February 1822 in Thakeham, Sussex.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Thakeham.  The witnesses to their marriage were Aaron Lilliot and Hannah Whittington.

Thomas may have been baptised on 11 January 1795 in Thakeham and have been the son of Edward Whittington (1755-1821) and Elizabeth Grant (?-1809).

When the 1841 census was recorded, 35 year old Harriet Whitington was the head of her household in Thakeham.  Five of her sons were with her on census night.

In 1851, 49 year old Harriet was living at "Cottage in Street" in Thakeham along with her 57 year old husband Edward Mears who was a farm labourer.  Also with them were 3 Whitington children (Aaron, William and Reuben) and 2 Mears children (Alfred 15 and Abraham 5).  They all gave their place of birth as Thakeham.

The GRO index records that an Edward Wells and Harriet Whitington may have married in the second quarter of 1844 in the Thakeham registration district.

Thomas and Harriet had 9 known children:

    1. John Whitington was baptised on 10 August 1823 in Thakeham.

    2. James Whitington was baptised on 21 December 1825 in Thakeham.  The 1841 census recorded that he was 10 years old and living with his mother.

    3. Jane Whitington was baptised on 21 December 1825 in Thakeham.

    4. Thomas Whittington was baptised on 17 June 1827 in Thakeham.  The 1841 census recorded that he was 10 years old and living with his mother.

    9. Reuben Whittington was born about 1842 in Thakeham.  He was 9 years old in 1841.
