John LAURENCE (c1680-?)

and Mary KINIONS (?-?)

John Laurence and Mary Kinions married on 22 May 1711 in Stopham, Sussex.

John Laurence's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might he have been baptised on 8 March 1684 in Arundel, Sussex and have been the son of George Lawrence?  However, a John Laurence was buried in Arundel on 25 May 1724.

Mary Kinions date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might her surname have been Kenyon?

As a widow of Stopham, Mary Laurence may have married Thomas Heward on 28 September 1738 in Fittleworth.  He was a labourer of Stopham.

John Laurence and Mary Kinions had 5 known children:

  1. Catherine Laurence was baptised on 8 September 1711 in Stopham.  She may have been buried on 10 September 1760 in Petworth as Catherine Sturt.

Catherine may have married John Sturt by licence on 6 December 1741 in Petworth, Sussex.  Their licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  It recorded that he was a bricklayer of Petworth.  Surety was provided by John himself and Robert Harmes a yeoman of Amberley.

John was probably baptised on 26 February 1712/3 in Petworth, the son of Thomas Sturtt.

John and Catherine had the following known children:

    1. William Sturt was baptised on 20 June 1742 in Petworth.

    2. Ann Sturt was born on 29 August 1743 and baptised on 4 September 1743 in Petworth.

    3. Elizabeth Sturt was abptised on 10 March 1744/5 in Petworth.

    4. Thomas Sturt was baptised on 6 September 1747 in Petworth.

    5. Edward Sturt was baptised on 25 March 1750 in Petworth.

  2. John Laurence was baptised on 28 January 1712 in Fittleworth.  He may have married Elizabeth Tharp by licence on 29 November 1738 in Wiggonholt, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Chichester and recorded that he was a labourer of Pulborough and she a widow also of Pulborough.  Surety was provided by John himself and Thomas Green  of Storrington.

  3. Mary Laurence was baptised on 8 October 1715 in Stopham.  She may have married Robert Willard on 8 May 1735 in Pulborough.

  4. Elizabeth Laurence was baptised on 12 April 1724 in Stopham.

Elizabeth may have married Daniel Trander on 24 July 1744 in Stopham.

Daniel and Elizabeth had the following known children:

    1. Hannah Trendar was baptised on 24 February 1750 in Stopham.

    2. Jane Trindar was baptised on 21 October 1753 in Stopham.

    3. David Trendar was baptised on 14 January 1756 in Stopham.

  5. Sarah Laurence was baptised on 1 January 1726 in Stopham.

The IGI records that a Mary Lawrence was baptised on 15 January 1713 in Fittleworth, the daughter of Thomas Lawrence and Mary.  Might the father's name have been wrongly recorded?  Should he have been John?

Thomas Lawrence and Elizabeth Croucher married on 22 April 1639 in Stopham.  They may have had the following children:

  1. Richard Laurence was baptised on 26 May 1650 in Stophaam

  2. Catherine Laurence was baptised on 24 August 1651 in Stopham.

  3. Agnes Laurence was baptised on 12 April 1653 in Stopham.

  4. Joane Laurence was baptised on 16 July 1654 in Stopham.

Catherine Laurence married Thomas Bridger by licence on 31 March 1713 in Fittleworth.  Their marriage licence was issued on 21 March 1712/3 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  She was of Fittleworth and he was a husbandman of Pulborough.  Surety for the licence was provided by Thomas himself and Thomas Barber a husabandman of Fittleworth.
