Richard KNOWLES (c1740-1788)

and Frances BROOKER (c1744-1826)

Cuckfield Church, from: http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/ccm/content/libraries-and-archives/record-office/picture-archives/photographs-prints-drawings/general-collection.en?page=3Richard Knowles and Frances Brooker were my 5x Great Grandparents.   5 138 (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 27 May 1765 at the parish church of Holy Trinity in Cuckfield, Sussex.  They were both then of Cuckfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Brooker and John Stammer.  The banns were published in Cuckfield on 28 April, 5 and 12 May 1765.  (Might James and Frances have been related, if so, how?  Might he have been her father or brother?)

Richard Knowles was born in about 1740 (as per the IGI).  He was probably buried on 15 April 1788 in Balcombe, Sussex, but the burial register just records his name and no further details.  In 1787 2 of his sons aged about 9 and 11 were boarded out and I assume this was because Richard was unable to support them.  Might he have been ill?  Richard was most probably the son of William Knowles (1702-1770) and Elizabeth Purvey (1698-1776).  On 1 February 1766, Richard together with Philip Knowls provided surety for a bastardy bond issued by the overseers of Hurstpierpoint, in respect of James Knowls who was named as the putative father of an unborn child by Susannah Wise of Balcombe.  All 3 men were then said to be husbandmen.  Philip and James were both the sons of William and Elizabeth, and I am, therefore, assuming Richard was also the son of William and Elizabeth.  William and Elizabeth would seem to have been the only Knowles couple in the Cuckfield/Balcombe area at about the time Richard was born, which I think was probably about 1735, rather than 1740.

Frances Brooker was born in about 1744.  She died aged 82 years and was buried on 25 February 1826 in Balcombe.  Might she have been the daughter of James Brooker and Frances Care who married in 1730 in Slaugham, Sussex?  There was a Frances Brooker baptised in 1745/6 in Brenchley, Kent, the daughter of John Brooker and Mary Walter (as per the IGI).  There was also a Frances Brooker born in 1732, the daughter of William Brooker and Frances Taylor, but she married George Swaine in 1758.  A William Brooker had children baptised in Balcombe:  Thomas in 1745, James in 1747, Ann 1749, Elizabeth 1752 and Jane 1756.

Richard Knowles and Frances Brooker had 13 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Knowles was baptised on 30 November 1765 in Balcombe.

Elizabeth may have married Thomas Luck by licence on 17 November 1791 in Slaugham.  At the time of their marriage Thomas was “residing in Slaugham”, he was a bachelor and signed his name.  Elizabeth was a spinster of Slaugham and signed her name.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Longhurst and John Lindfield.

  2. John Knowles, my 4x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 25 December 1766 in Balcombe.  He married Sarah Box in 1788.  (They have their own page.)

  3. James Knowles was baptised on 17 April 1768 in Balcombe.  He was buried on 10 September 1769 in Cuckfield.

  4. Richard Knowles was baptised on 18 June 1769 in Slaugham.

Richard may have married Mary Scrivens by banns on 12 November 1792 in Worth, Sussex.  Richard was a bachelor and made his X mark and Mary was a spinster and signed her name.  They were both of Worth.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Scrivens (mark) and Mark Brooker (signed).  (Mark was born in 1739.  Might he have been related to Richard, if so, how?  Might he have been an uncle, i.e., the elder brother of Richard's mother?  Or might Mark and Frances have been cousins?)

Richard and Mary had 2 known sons:

    1. James Knowles was baptised on 25 July 1794 in Worth.

    2. William Knowles was baptised on 11 June 1797 in Worth.

  5. George Knowles was baptised on 21 September 1770 in Cuckfield.  Did he marry Elizabeth Clymer on 7 February 1804 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex?

  6. Ann Knowles was baptised on 3 May 1772 in Balcombe.  She may have married James Marchant on 12 April 1796 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Thomas Knowls was baptised on 6 November 1774 in Balcombe.  On 3 February 1790 he was boarded out to John Comber.

  8. Henry Knowles was baptised on 13 December 1776 in Balcombe.  On 3 January 1787 he was boarded out by the Balcombe overseers to John Webber, and then again on 9 February 1788, 3 February 1789 and 3 February 1790.  On 3 July 1791 he went to John Turner and then to Thomas Gardner on 6 February 1792.

  9. James Knowles was baptised on 15 February 1778 in Balcombe.  On 3 January 1787 he was boarded out by the Balcombe overseers to Thomas Gardener and then again on 9 February 1788 and 3 February 1789.  On 3 February 1790 he was boarded out to John Comber and again on 3 July 1791 and 6 February 1792.

  10. Edward Knowles was baptised on 26 November 1780 in Balcombe.  He was buried on 6 December 1857 in Balcombe

Edward married Elizabeth Fieldwick on 14 October 1806 in Balcombe.  They were both single and both of Balcombe.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Constable and John Rastrigg.  (John was Elizabeth's uncle.)

Elizabeth was baptised 13 June 1786 in Balcombe and was the daughter of William Fieldwick and Sarah Goldsmith.  She was buried on 25 March 1853 in Balcombe.

Edward and Elizabeth had 8 known children:

    1. William Knowles was baptised on 8 March 1807 in Balcombe.

    2. Mary Knowles was baptised on 10 September 1809 in Balcombe.

    3. Elizabeth Knowles was baptised on 19 January 1812 in Balcombe.

      Elizabeth had an illegitmate daughter:

      1. Eleanor Knowles was baptised on 15 August 1830 in Balcombe.  She may have married James Jeal on 14 April 1860 in Balcombe.

    4. Harriot Knowles was baptised on 7 August 1814 in Balcombe.  She died in 1881.

Harriett married John Hugkulstone (or Jonah) on 17 April 1842 at St. James in Paddington, London.

John was born about 1812-18 in Marylebone and died aged 72 years in 1890.

      They had 4 known children:

      1. Elizabeth Hugkulstone was baptised on 5 October 1845 at St. Mary's in Whitechapel, London.

      2. John Hugkulstone was born in 1846 (fourth quarter).

      3. Henry Hugkulstone was born on 23 November 1848 and baptised on 16 September 1849 at St. Mary's in Whitechapel.  He died in 1895.  He married Emma Jane Vail (1852-1940).

      4. Harriett Hugkulstone was born in 1852 (fourth quarter).  She married Edward John Howe.

    5. Frances Knowles was baptised on 15 June 1817 in Balcombe.

Frances married Henry Upton on 17 September 1836 in Balcombe.

      They had 1 known daughter:

      1. Elizabeth Fieldwick Upton was baptised on 3 April 1853 in Balcombe.

    6. Anne Knowles was baptised on 2 April 1820 in Balcombe.  She married Jeremiah Cox Hill on 13 September 1841 in Balcombe.

    7. Lucy Knowles was baptised on 8 February 1824 in Balcombe.

    8. Edward Knowles was baptised on 26 February 1826 in Balcombe.

  11. Mary Knowles was baptised on 25 August 1782 in Balcombe.

  12. Frances Knowles was baptised on 19 June 1785 in Balcombe.

  13. William Knowles was baptised on 3 September 1786 in Balcombe.  He may have been buried on 22 June 1794 in Balcombe, but the burial register just records the name and no further details.

Richard and Frances were the only Knowles couple to have had children baptised in Balcombe between 1765 and 1786.  At at about the time Richard was born, the only Knowles couple to have had children in Balcombe were William and Elizabeth.
