Thomas KNIGHT
(1781-1857)
and Mildred THOMPSET (c1785-?)

Thomas Knight and Mildred Thompset married by banns on 6 April 1804 in Shermanbury,
Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were
both of Shermanbury. They both made their X marks. The
witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth Attree and
James Hards. (They were not my direct ancestors.)
Thomas Knight was baptised on 18 November 1781 in Shermanbury.
He was the son of John
Knight (1754-1812) and
Ann Gearing
(c1754-1799). He died aged 75 years and was buried on 26 July 1857
in Shermanbury.
Mildred Thompset's date and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me. Might she have been the daughter of
Benjamin Tomset and Sarah Simmonds who married
in January 1771 in Henfield? Or maybe William Tomsett
and Mary Groves who married on 9 April 1771 in
Slaugham? She died between the recording of the 1841 and 1851
census. Her burial does not appear in a transcript of the
Shermanbury burial register.
At the time of the 1841 census the couple and 3 of their children were
living at Wineham within the parish of Shermanbury. Thomas was
then an agricultural labourer.
When the 1851 census was recorded, Thomas was a 68 year old widower and
rat catcher and he was living at Wyndham Cottage in Shermanbury.
Also with him was the family of his son John and a 16 year old grandson,
Richard Knight who was also a rat catcher.
