Thomas KNIGHT (1781-1857)

and Mildred THOMPSET (c1785-?)

Thomas Knight and Mildred Thompset married by banns on 6 April 1804 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Shermanbury.  They both made their X marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth Attree and James Hards.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Knight was baptised on 18 November 1781 in Shermanbury.  He was the son of John Knight (1754-1812) and Ann Gearing (c1754-1799).  He died aged 75 years and was buried on 26 July 1857 in Shermanbury.

Mildred Thompset's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been the daughter of Benjamin Tomset and Sarah Simmonds who married in January 1771 in Henfield?  Or maybe William Tomsett and Mary Groves who married on 9 April 1771 in Slaugham?  She died between the recording of the 1841 and 1851 census.  Her burial does not appear in a transcript of the Shermanbury burial register.

At the time of the 1841 census the couple and 3 of their children were living at Wineham within the parish of Shermanbury.  Thomas was then an agricultural labourer.  When the 1851 census was recorded, Thomas was a 68 year old widower and rat catcher and he was living at Wyndham Cottage in Shermanbury.  Also with him was the family of his son John and a 16 year old grandson, Richard Knight who was also a rat catcher.

Thomas Knight and Mildred Thompset had 12 known children:

  1. John Knight was baptised on 10 February 1805 in Shermanbury.  He married Elizabeth Mitchell in 1832.  (They have their own page.)

  2. William Knight was baptised on 5 April 1807 in Shermanbury.

  3. Stephen Knight was baptised on 17 July 1808 in Shermanbury.  He died aged 59 years and was buried on 7 January 1868 in Shermanbury.

  4. Peter Knight was baptised on 25 February 1810 in Shermanbury.

  5. James Knight was baptised on 29 December 1811 in Shermanbury.

  6. Mary Knight was baptised on 20 March 1814 in Shermanbury.

    Mary had an illegitimate son:

    1. Richard Knight was baptised on 7 September 1834 in Shermanbury.  He was a 16 year old rat catcher in 1851 and living with his grandfather.

  7. Sarah Knight was baptised on 16 March 1816 in Shermanbury.

  8. Henry Knight was baptised on 11 January 1818 in Shermanbury.

  9. Samuel Knight was baptised on 5 March 1820 in Shermanbury.  In 1841 he was 20 years old and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

  10. Alfred Knight was baptised on 3 February 1822 in Shermanbury.  He was 19 years old in 1841.

  11. Thomas Knight was baptised on 9 May 1824 in Shermanbury and buried there on 17 January 1828, aged 4 years.

  12. Ann Knight was baptised on 15 November 1826 in Shermanbury.  She was 17 years old in 1841 and living at home.
