Stephen KNIGHT
(1808-1889)
and Sarah BURRAGE (1811-1894)

Stephen Knight and Sarah Burrage married on 24 July 1831 in
Godalming, Surrey. (They were not my direct ancestors. Stephen
and Sarah were the 2x great parents of my cousins.)
Stephen Knight was baptised on 30 January 1808 in Rudgwick, Sussex.
He was the son of
Stephen Knight
and Hannah
Botting. He died aged 81 years and his death was registered in
the first quarter of 1889 in the Horsham registration district. In
1865 he was a bricklayer.
Sarah Burrage was baptised on 27 October 1811 in Cowfold, Sussex.
She was the daughter of Isaac Burrage and Catherine Mitchell.
She died aged 83 years and her death was registered in the fourth quarter of
1894 in the Horsham registration district. In 1891 she was living with
the family of her daughter Catherine.
When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Cousins Garn in
Wisborough Green and Stephen was then a brickmaker. Also with them on
census night was 22 year old Emily Burrage. In 1851 the family
were living at Exfeld Wood in Rudgwick and Stephen was a brickmaker and
agricultural labourer. He was still a brickmaker in 1851 and the
family were living at Tismans Common in Rudgwick. Also with them in
1861 were 3 lodgers: 37 year old widower and agricultural labourer
Aaron Dinage, 10 year old Rhoda Dinage and 6 year old Ellen
Dinage. Stephen and Sarah, along with their son Job were still
living on Tismans Common in 1871 and he was still a brickmaker. They
also had a lodger living with them, 27 year old James Mitchener.
The couple were living alone on Tismans Common in 1881 and he was still a
brickmaker. Next door was the family of their daughter Catherine.
Stephen Knight and Sarah Burrage had 11 known children:

Emily Knight was baptised on 5 February 1832 in Rudgwick. She
was 9 years old in 1841. She died aged 72 years and was buried on 30
November 1903 in Cranleigh, Surrey.
Emily married Leonard Stemp on 16 October 1849 in Rudgwick.
The witnesses to the marriage were George Luke and Mary ?.
The banns were published on 30 September, 7 and 14 October 1849.
Leonard was baptised on 10 July 1825 in Cranley, Surrey and was the son of
Robert Stemp (1779-1853) and Mary Lucas.
Leonard and Emily had the following children:

Ellen Stemp was baptised on 2 December 1849 and again on 2
February 1850 in Rudgwick. She had an illegitimate daughter:

Jane Willis Stemp was born in Guildford, Surrey and baptised on
21 April 1872 in Ewhurst, Surrey.

James Stemp was baptised on February 1852 in Dunsfold,
Surrey.

Harriet Stemp was baptised on 11 March 1855 in Cranley.

George Stemp was baptised on 3 May 1857 in Cranley. George
married (Elizabeth) Alice Warr on 1 December 1888 in
Cranleigh.

Emily Stemp was baptised on 1 April 1860 in Rudgwick. She
married John Charman on 13 February 1886 in Rudgwick.

Leonard Stemp was baptised on 21/23 September 1862 in Oakwood,
Surrey. He married Emma.

William Stemp was baptised on 14 May 1865 in Dunsfold.
William married Emily Brooker on 15 May 1893 in Ewhurst, Surrey.
The witnesses to the marriage were Harvey Stemp and Jane Stemp.
Emily was born about 1870.

Alice Stemp was baptised on 7/11 April 1867 in Alfold, Surrey.

Stephen Stemp was baptised on 31 January 1869/70 in Ewhurst,
Surrey.

Harvey Stemp was born about 1873 in Ewhurst.

Job Stemp was born at Redlands in Ewhurst and was baptised on 7
February 1876 in Rudgwick.

Sarah Knight was baptised on 13 October 1833 in Wisborough Green,
Sussex. In 1841 she was 7 years old. She was 17 years old in
1851 and the eldest of her siblings living at home.

Charlotte Knight was baptised on 10 May 1835 in Wisborough Green.
She was 6 yeas old in 1841.
-
Ann Knight was baptisedon 25 March 1838 in Wisborough Green.
In 1841 she was 3 years old. She was a 13 year old scholar in 1851.

Stephen Knight was baptised on 17 November 1839 in Wisborough
Green. He was a year old in 1841. In 1851 he was an 11 year
old agricultural labourer.

Rebecca Knight was baptised on 31 July 1842 in Wisborough Green.

John Knight was baptised on 8 September 1844 in Wisborough Green.
He was a 6 year old scholar in 1851. John married
Sarah Woodhatch
in 1865. (They have their own page.)

Ruth Knight was born about 1847 in Rudgwick. In 1851 she was
3 years old. Ruth married John Sturt on 27 February 1870 in
Rudgwick.

Job Knight was born in 1851 in Rudgwick. He was 3 months old
when the 1851 census was recorded. In 1861 he was 10 years old and
the eldest of his siblings living at home. He was a 20 year old
brickmaker in 1871.

Miriam Knight was born about 1854 and baptised on 2 November 1856
in Rudgwick. She was 7 years old in 1861. Miriam married
Charles Strudwick on 15 April 1871 in Rudgwick. On their
marriage certificate Miriam named her father as Thomas Pelling and
one of the witnesses was Charles Pelling.

Catherine Knight was baptised on 2 November 1856 in Rudgwick.
In 1861 she was 4 years old.
Catheine married Frederick Cheesmore.
Frederick was baptised on 1 February 1852 in Rudgwick and was the son of
George Chesmore and Eliza
When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living on Tismans Common
in Rudgwick and Frederick was an agricultural labourer. The family
were still living on Tismans Common in 1891 and Frederick was still an
agricultural labourer. Catherine's widowed mother was also living
with them.
Frederick and Catherine had the following children:

Fanny Cheesmore was born about 1875 in Rudgwick. She was a
6 year old scholar in 1881.

Rosina Cheesmore was born about 1878 in Rudgwick. She was 3
years old in 1881.

Katie Cheesmore was born about 1880 in Rudgwick. When the
1881 census was recorded she was a year old. She was an 11 year
old scholar in 1891 and the eldest of her siblings living at home.

John Cheesmore was born about 1882 in Rudgwick. He was a 9
year old scholar in 1891.
-
Sarah Ann Cheesmore was born about 1886 in Rudgwick. In
1891 she was 5 years old.

Miram Jane Cheesmore was born about 1889 in Rudgwick. She
was 2 years old in 1891.
-
Frederick Cheesmore was born in 1890 in Rudgwick. He was 5
months old when the 1891 census was recorded.
