John KNIGHT (1805-?)

and Elizabeth MITCHELL (1814-?)

John Knight and Elizabeth Mitchell married by licence on 4 August 1832 in Southwick, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Dowlen and Charles Fuller.  Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, and recorded that he was a bachelor of Southwick aged 21 years and upwards, whilst she was a minor of Cowfold and married with the consent of Thomas Mitchell.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Knight was baptised on 10 February 1805 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Knight (1781-1857) and Mildred Thompset.  He may have died between 1871 and 1881.

Elizabeth Mitchell was born about 1814 in Eastbourne, Sussex.  Might she have been the daughter of Thomas Mitchell and Elizabeth Reynolds who had married on 10 January 1814 in Rodmell, Sussex?  An Elizabeth Mitchell daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth was baptised on 24 May 1814 in Berwick, Sussex.

When the 1851 census was recorded, the couple and 4 children (John, Mary, Elizabeth and Thomas) were living with John's 68 year old father, Thomas Knight, at Wyndham Cottage in Shermanbury.  John was then a 46 year old agricultural labourer from Shermanbury and Elizabeth was 37 and born in Eastbourne.  In 1861, John was described as married, but his wife was not at home on census night.  He was then living at or next door to Furzefield in Shermanbury along with 6 children (Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas, Turza, Sarah and Ruth), and he was a 56 year old agricultural labourer.  By 1871, John was a 67 year old widower and lodger in the home of William Isted at Field Lands in Henfield, Sussex.

John Knight and Elizabeth Mitchell had 8 known children:

  1. Eliza Knight was baptised on 3 November 1836 in Shermanbury.

  2. John Knight was baptised on 20 October 1839 in Shermanbury.  He was a 12 year old errand boy in 1851.

  3. Mary Knight was baptised on 23 June 1844 in Shermanbury.  She was a 6 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 she was 16 years old.

  4. Elizabeth Reynolds Knight was baptised on 20 June 1847 in Shermanbury.  In 1851 she was 4 years old.  She was 13 years old in 1861.

  5. Thomas Knight was baptised on 3 February 1850 in Shermanbury.  He was a year old when the 1851 census was recorded.  In 1861 he was an 11 year old carter boy.

  6. Thirza Knight was baptised on 9 January 1853 in Shermanbury.  In 1861 she was an 8 year old scholar.  As Teresa Knight she married Henry Richardson in 1875.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Sarah Knight was born about 1855 in Shermanbury.  She was 6 years old in 1861.

  8. Ruth Knight was baptised on 3 February 1856 in Shermanbury.  She was 5 years old in 1861.
