James KNIGHT
(1868-?)
and Fanny CLARK (C1879-?)

James Knight and Fanny Ross Clark married in the
fourth quarter of 1896 in the Horsham registration district.
(They were not my direct ancestors. One of their sons married my
mother's twin sister.)
James Knight was baptised on 8 November 1868 in Rudgwick, Sussex.
He was the son of John Knight
(1844-?) and Sarah Woodhatch
(1843-?). The 1871 census records that he was 2 years old and living
with his parents at Weyhurst in Rudgwick. In 1881 he was a 13 year old
agricultural labourer living at ???brooks Farm in Alford, Surrey, the home
of 67 year old George Muggeridge. In 1891 he was a single 23 year old agricultural labourer
lodging in the home of Henry William Green
at Woodland in Ewhurst, Surrey.
Fanny Clark was born about 1879 in Horsham, Sussex,
although no baptism has been found for her in the Horsham parish registers.
Her birth may have been registered in the fourth quarter of 1879 in the
Horsham registration district. When the 1881 census was recorded, 1
year old Fanny Clarke was an inmate in Horsham Union
Workhouse, along with her possible mother, 22 year old Ellen Clarke.
Ellen may have married George Peter Burchell in the third
quarter of 1883 in Horsham registration district. In 1891, Fanny may
have been 12 year old Fanny Burchell, living with her
grandfather Peter Burchell (1830-?) in Warnham, Sussex.
Her mother may have died aged 25 and have been buried on 13 July 1884 in
Horsham.
At the time of the 1901 census, the couple and 3 children were living at
Slatter Cottage in Billingshurst. James was then a 32 year old carter
on a farmer and Fanny was say to be 23. When the 1911 census was
recorded the couple and 6 of their children were living at Copse Green,
Northchapel, Sussex. James was then a 42 year old waggoner on a farm
and Fanny was 36.
