William KITCHENHAM (c1600-1656)

and Judith COLLIER (c1600-1627)

and Judith SARE (c1600-?)

William Kitchenham and Judith Collier were my 11x Great Grandparents.  They married on 7 October 1622 at the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Wadhurst, Sussex.  He may then have married Judith Drincker, widow, on 26 January 1628/9 in Westfield, Sussex.  (Ten years later a Stephen Kitchenham married in Westfield.)

William Kitchenhamís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been buried on 22 November 1656 in Wadhurst and the burial register records that he was 'Old Wm Kitchenham of Ticehurst'.  Or was he buried on 7 August 1668 in Wadhurst?  He may have been the son of John Kitchenham (c1575-1655).  In 1642 he may have been the William Kitchenham who contributed 5 shillings to the relief of the Irish Protestants.

Judith Collierís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  The wife of William Kitchenham was buried on 26 December 1627 in Wadhurst.  Was this of Judith?

Judith Sare's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She first married Alan Drincker on 6 October 1616 in Westfield.  They had the following children:

  1. Steven Drinker was baptised on 28 October 1621 in Guestling, Sussex.

  2. Joane Drinker was baptised on 15 February 1623 in Guestling.

  3. Joseph Drinker was baptised on 11 March 1626/7 in Guestling.

  4. Robert Drinker was of Mayfield when he was mentioned in his half brother John Kichinham's 1682 will.  He may have married Joan Hilder on 30 May 1650 in Wadhurst, and/or Susanna Gardeuebus on 17 March 1667 at St. Thomas in Lewes, Sussex  (The IGI says Robert married Susanna, whereas the Sussex marriage index records that it was Richard).  Robert may have been the father of:

    1. Robert Drinker was of Mayfield when he married Elizabeth Gup by licence in 1691 at the parish church of St. Thomas Cliffe in Lewes, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was dated 9 June 1691 and her name was then recorded as Elizabeth Bassett, a spinster of Mayfield.

Robert's brother John mentioned 3 sons of Robert in his will, but not by name.

William Kitchenham and Judith Collier may have had 4 known children: 5 202

  1. Judith Kitchenham was baptised on 4 July 1623 in Wadhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  2. Ann Kitchenham was baptised on 18 April 1624 in Wadhurst and buried there on 4 September 1624.  Only her father's name was recorded against her baptism and burial.

  3. Joane Kitchenham was baptised on 20 November 1625 in Wadhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  4. William Kitchenham, my 10x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 18 November 1627 in Wadhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded against his baptism.  William married 5 238 Ann Seares in 1653.  (They have their own page.)

William Kitchenham and Judith Sare may have had 3 known children:

  1. Mary Kitchenham was baptised on 18 April 1630 in Wadhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She was mentioned in her brother's 1682 will as the wife of William Wellard.  They married on 31 March 1657 in Thurnham, Kent.  William was then a hoopmaker of Darenth and Mary of Thurnham.

William and Mary had the following children:

    1. William Wellard was mentioned in his uncle John's 1682 will, by which he was to receive his uncle's messuage, lands and tenements in Detling, Kent.

    2. Stephen Wellard

    3. Mary Wellard

  2. John Kitchenham was baptised on 7 April 1633 in Wadhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He left a will dated 20 July 1682.  John married Margaret Roberts on 13 December 1659 in Maidstone.  From his will it would seem there were no surviving children from this marriage.  John was of Maidstone when he died.  As a widow, Margaret Kitchenham of Sutton Valence married David Austen on 31 January 1688 in Sutton Valance or East Sutton.  David was then a bachelor of Staplehurst.

  3. Jane Kitchenham was baptised on 20 March 1634/5 in Wadhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She was mentioned in her brother's 1682 will as the wife of William Chapman.  They married on 26 October 1658 in Thurnham

William and Jane had the following children, who were mentioned in her brother's will:

    1. John Chapman

    2. William Chapman

    3. Joseph Chapman was baptised on 9 November 1663 in Detling.

    4. Margaret Chapman was baptisedon 20 May 1666 in Detling.

    5. Robert Chapman

    6. Mary Chapman was baptised on 2 June 1672 in Detling.

    7. Jane Chapman was baptised on 9 May 1675 in Detling.
