John KITCHENHAM (1660-1714)

and Mary BAKER (c1660-?)

and Susan TOOPENNY (c1665-?)

 

John Kitchenham and Mary Baker were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 23 January 1680/1 at the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Wadhurst, Sussex.  John then married Susan Toopenny on 14 June 1688 in Wadhurst.

John Kitchenham was baptised on 26 September 1660 in Wadhurst.  He was the son of William Kitchenham (1627-1677) and Ann Seares (c1630-1689).  He was a glover.  John was buried on 18 August 1714 in Bearstead, Kent, and it was recorded in the burial register that he was John Kitchingham of Wadhurst.  John was mentioned in the 1682 will of his uncle John Kichenham a cornfactor of Maidstone.

Mary Baker’s date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me (see below).  She may have died in about 1687/8.

Susan Toopenny's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might her father have been Thomas Toopany who as an old man was buried on 25 December 1691 in Wadhurst?

 

John Kitchenham and Mary Baker had 4 known children: 5 202

  1. A male child was buried on 11 January 1681/2 in Wadhurst.

  2. Elizabeth Kitchenham, my 8x Great Grandmother, was baptised aged 4 years and 10 months on 18 November 1687 in Wadhurst.  She married John Swift in 1708 as his second wife.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Jane Kitchenham was baptised on 18 November 1687 in Wadhurst, aged 2 years.  On 2 December 1695, Jane daughter of John Kitchenham, a glover of Wadhurst, was apprenticed to Margaret Graybon of Wadhurst, widow.

  4. Mary Kitchenham was born about February 1686/7 and baptised on 18 November 1687 in Wadhurst, aged 9 months.

John Kitchenham and Susan Toopenny had 7 known children:

  1. William Kitchenham was baptised on 28 April 1689 in Wadhurst.  A reference on the A2A web site records that on 3 April 1741, William Kitchenham aged 50, gave a deposition.  But there was another William Kitchenham baptised in October 1689.

    Did he marry Susannah?

    Susannah died or was buried on 17 November 1742 in Bearsted, Kent.

    William and Susannah had the following children:

    1. John Kitchingham was born/baptised on 5 October 1728 in Bearsted.

    2. William Kitchingham was born/baptised on 16 November 1735 in Bearsted and died/buried there on 24 November 1735.

  2. Mary Kitchenham was baptised on 1 May 1691 in Wadhurst.

      She may have had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Jane Kitchenham was baptised in Apri1 1716 in Wadhurst.  Might she have married Richard Leopard on 16 October 1733 in the Fleet Prison, London?  Richard was then a bachelor and labourer of "Bleachinley", Surrey and Jane a spinster of Frant, Sussex.  However, there was another Jane Kitchenham baptised in July 1700.  (Another source say it was Ann Kitchingham and that she was baptised on 8 April 1716 in Wadhurst.)

  3. John Kitchenham was baptised on 3 March 1693/4 in Wadhurst.  Might he have died before 1712 or did he survive and was he the John who married Mary Beall in 1711?  Or did he marry Elizabeth Redmains at All Saints in Maidstone on 13 October 1720?  John and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Kitchingham was born/baptised on 12 November 1721 in Detling, Kent.

    2. John Kitchingham was born/baptised on 31 May 1724 in Stockbury, Kent.  He died or was buried on 19 June 1757 in Stockbury.

    3. Thomas Kitchingham was born/baptised on 23 April 1729 in Stockbury.  He died or was buried on 8 May 1805 in Hartlip, Kent.

    4. Stephen Kitchingham was born/baptised on 14 June 1730 in Stockbury.  He died or was buried on 31 August 1810 in Hartlip.

    5. Henry Kitchingham was born/baptised on 11 March 1733 in Stockbury.  He died or was buried on 16 March 1783 in Hartlip.

  4. Stephen Kitchenham was baptised on 11 February 1695/6 in Lamberhurst.  He died or was buried on 21 February 1751 in Rainham, Kent.

    Stephen married Susanna Nookes on 9 December 1716 in Rainham.

    Susanna died or was buried on 29 November 1745 in Rainham.

    Stephen and Susanna had the following children:

    1. John Kitchingham was born/baptised on 11 March 1717 in Rainham.  He died or was buried on 14 March 1717 in Rainham.

    2. Thomas Kitchingham was born/baptised on 11 March 1717 in Rainham.  He died or was buried on 14 March 1717 in Rainham.

  5. Thomas Kitchenham was baptised on 17 August 1701 in Lamberhurst.  At the time of his baptism his parents were of Lamberhurst, Kent.

    Did he marry Mary Loyd on 8 October 1726 in London?  And/or might he have married Catharine Andrews on 26 July 1728 in Aylesford, Kent?

    Thomas and Catherine had the following children:

    1. Sarah Kitchingham was born/baptised on 22 September 1728 in Thurnham, Kent.

    2. John Kitchingham was born/baptised on 22 December 1730 in Bearsted.

    3. Thomas Kitchingham was born/baptised on 22 December 1730 in Bearsted.

    4. John Kitchingham was born/baptised on 2 December 1732 in Bearsted.

    5. Sarah Kitchingham was born/baptised on 18 April 1736 in Bearsted.

    6. Elizabeth Kitchingham was born/baptised on 10 December 1738 in Bearsted.

    7. William Kitchingham was born/baptised on 19 February 1743 in Bearsted..

  6. Richard Kitchenham was baptised on 6 January 1703/4 in Lamberhurst.  At the time of his baptism his parents were of Lamberhurst, Kent.

  7. Edward Kitchenham was baptised on 19 July 1708 in Lamberhurst.

It is going to be difficult to determine Mary's birth/baptism, as there are the following Mary Baker's to consider (and probably a few more):

  1. Mary Baker married Edward Hart on 12 October 1676 in Brightling.

  2. Mary Baker married Stephen Roads on 26 June 1679 in Heathfield.  She was then of Mayfield and he of Heathfield.

  3. Mary Baker married George Gulden on 12 April 1680 in Dallington.  She was then of Horsemondon and he of Marden.

  4. Mary Baker married William Oxenbridge by Banns on 27 February 1681/2 in Ticehurst.

  5. Mary Baker married John Baker by Licence on 17 September 1682 in Wadhurst.

  6. Mary Baker married Abraham Vennor by Licence on 24 February 1684/5 in Wadhurst.

  7. Mary Baker married Alexander Pocock on 31 January 1685/6 in Dallington.  She was then of Rotherfield and he of Dallington.

  1. Mary Baker was baptised on 5 June 1652 in Dallington, the daughter of Thomas Baker.

  2. Mary Baker was baptised on 8 January 1659/60 in Rotherfield, the daughter of John Baker.

  3. Mary Baker was born on 29 August and baptised on 13 September 1660 in Etchingham, the daughter of Isaac Baker.

In 1664 there was a William Baker of Ticehurst, who was described as a glover.
