Thomas KING
(1687-1750)
and Mary Austen FOSTER (c1700-1749)

Thomas King
and
Mary Austen Foster
were my 7x Great Grandparents.
to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married by banns on 23
April 1719 in Heathfield, Sussex. They were both then of Burwash,
Sussex.
Thomas King
may have been baptised on 12 June 1687 in Dallington, Sussex, the son
of Thomas King
(1648-1714) and Elizabeth
Palmer (c1650-1726). He was buried in Burwash on 1 December 1750
as Thomas King senior. He left a will dated 1 May 1750 in which he named his 3
sons and appointed his son Thomas as executor. (I have a copy of this document and will eventually transcribe it
and include in this site.) Thomas was a
weaver. There was also a Thomas King who was
baptised on 2 September 1683 the son of
James King
and Ann Hail,
and another on 30 November 1699 the son of
John King and
Ann Smith?
Both baptisms took place in Burwash. Thomas son of James was buried
in Burwash in 1705.
Mary Austen
Foster's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
She was buried on 27 January 1749 in Burwash. The burial register
records that she was the wife of Thomas King. A
Mary Foster was baptised in Burwash on 15 May 1693, the daughter of
John Foster and Marjery Prior. But she may have married
William Adams on 14 February 1716/7 in Burwash. There was also
a Maria Austen who was baptised on 26 June 1694 in Burwash, the
daughter of Thomas Austen and Frances More. But she
probably married Samuel Bexley on 7 June 1716 in Heathfield.
Samuel and Mary were both then of Burwash.
The 1747 Window Tax assessment for Burwash recorded that a Thomas
King had 9 windows and was required to pay 2 shillings.
Thomas King and Mary
Austen Foster had 3 known children:
-
Thomas
King, my 6x Great
Grandfather,
was baptised on 6 March 1720/1 in Burwash.
He married
Ann Tutt in 1748. (They have their own page.)
-
William King was baptised on 29
April 1723 in Burwash. Did he marry
Mary Elliott on 15 April
1750 in Burwash? There was another
William King born in 1719. One of the William King's may
have been
buried on 19 August 1768 and the other 4 September 1780, both in Burwash.
-
John King was baptised on 5 November 1726 in Burwash. He died
a bachelor aged 84 years in Burwash and was buried there on 27 April 1810.
Strangely, the burial register recorded he was the son of Thomas and Mary
King. Another John King was baptised on 5 May 1726
in nearby Salehurst.
