James KING
(c1757-?)
and Sarah AVARD (c1760-?)

James King and Sarah Avard married by banns on 23 January 1781
in Wadhurst, Sussex. They were both then of Wadhurst.
James King may have been baptised on 20 April 1755, the son of
John King (1726-?) and
Sarah Watson, or on 7 October 1759,
the son of James King
(1728-?) and Mary Dunk.
Both baptisms took place in Salehurst, Sussex and they were most probably
cousins.
Sarah Avard's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Might she have been the daughter of Thomas Avard and
Sarah Lark Bryant who had married in Wadhurst on 23
Febraury 1758? Or maybe Edward Avard and
Mary Smith who had married on 10 December 1751 in Dallington,
but were both of Wadhurst at the time.
James King and Sarah
Avard
had 5 known children:
-
Elizabeth King was baptised on 18 November 1785 in
Salehurst. Both her parents were named in the baptism register.
-
Charlotte King was baptised on 16 November 1787 in
Salehurst. Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism
register. Did she marry Nicholas Torrance by
banns on 16 January 1804 in Salehurst? He was then from Pevensey
and a
Sergeant Major of 22nd Regiment of Foot. Or did she marry
Edward Boorman
on 30 March 1807 in Etchingham? Nicholas Torrance
may have married for a second time to Isabella Serogie
on 17 December 1807 in Ashford, Kent.
-
Harriet King was baptised on 30 July 1789 in Salehurst.
Both her parents were named in the baptism register.
-
James King was baptised on 6 May 1791 in Salehurst.
Only his father's name was noted in the baptism register.
-
Philadelphia King was baptised on 20 February 1794 in
Salehurst. Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism
register. She may have married Stephen Tendall by
banns on 4 November 1814 in Salehurst.
Sarah King was the mother of an illegitimate daughter:
-
Frances King was baptised on 7 January 1798 in
Salehurst.
A Mary King married James Hicks by banns
on 17 April 1820 in Salehurst. She was then 26 years old and he
was 31, as per the Sussex marriage index. I have not found a
baptism for Mary in the IGI, but might she have been a daughter of James
and Sarah?
A Henry King married Elizabeth Williams
by banns on 20 October 1817 in Salehurst. He was then 20 years old
and she was 18, again as per the Sussex marriage index. The
witnesses to their marriage were William Williams,
James King and John Heathfield.
Might Henry have been a son of James and Sarah?
