John JENNINGS (c1530-1583)

and Catherine (c1530-1585)

John Jennings and Catherine were my 11x Great Grandparents.  They probably married before 1561 and possibly in Beenham, Berkshire.  The Beenham registers begin in 1561.

John Jennings may have been born in the 1530's.  He was buried in Beenham on 28 January 1582/3.

Catherine may also have been born in the 1530's.  She was buried in Beenham on 31 January 1584/5.

John Jennings and Catherine had 3 known children:

  1. Alice Jennings was baptised on 23 November 1561 in Beenham.

  2. Agnes Genence was baptised on 12 October 1563 in Beenham.  As Agnes Gennence she married Robert Waram on 18 November 1588 in Beenham.

  3. Richard Jennings was baptised on 11 September 1565 in Beenham - he was my 10x Great Grandfather.  He married Joan Smith on 10 October 1598 in Reading, Berkshire.  (They have their own page.)

John and Catherine may also have been the parents of the following, but given the 11 year gap between the baptisms of Richard and John, I am not so sure.  John and Catherine may have been the grandparents of the following, via a son named John who may have been born in about the 1550's.

  1. Elizabeth Gennings was buried on 15 February 1571 in Beenham.  She may have been a daughter of John and Catherine born before 1561, or perhaps a sister or sister-in-law of John.

  2. John Jennings was baptised on 9 July 1576 in Beenham and buried there on 20 August 1576.

  3. Avis Jennings was baptised on 14 October 1578 in Beenham.

The Beenham registers also record that a John Genence son of John, was baptised on 22 April 1587 and buried there on 16 May 1587.  Could John senior have been a son or nephew John born about 1530?  John senior may have been buried on 1 July 1609 in Beenham as John Genence.

An Elizabeth Gennance was buried on 5 September 1627 in Beenham, and on 18 May 1637 a Margaret wife of John Jennings, senior was also buried in Beenham.
