James JACKSON (c1765-1817)

and Phoebe TURL (1774-1790)

and Hannah LILIOT (1774-1850)

 

James Jackson married twice.  Firstly to Phoebe Turl by banns on 26 April 1789 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Laker and William Gratwick  He then married Hannah Lelliett by licence on 11 January 1794 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to the marriage were Henry Float and John Baker.  Their marriage licence was dated 10 January 1794 and recorded that James was of West Grinstead (4 weeks), a labourer and a widower aged 24 years.  Hannah Lelliet was of Wiston (some days) and a spinster aged 19 years.  She married with the consent of her father who was named as Samuel Lelliet.  Surety for the licence was provided by James himself and Henry Float a farmer of Wiston.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Hannah was the sister of my 4x Great Grandmother.)

James Jackson's date and place of birth are unknown, to me.  He died aged 81 years on 22 March 1846 in West Grinstead.  James died aged 81 years in Ashington and was buried on 22 March 1846 in West Grinstead

Phoebe Turle was baptised on 22 February 1767 in West Grinstead.  She was the daughter of William Turle and Sarah.  She was buried on 19 December 1790 in West Grinstead.

Hannah Liliot was baptised on 6 March 1774 in Wiston, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Samuel Lillyot (1748-1817) and Elizabeth Serjeant (1748-?).  She died aged 82 years, according to the burial register, and was buried on 25 January 1850 in West Grinstead. 

The 1841 census records that James was a 74 year old agricultural labourer and Hannah was then 69 years old.  They were living in Washington, Sussex along with 24 year old John Jackson who was also an agricultural labourer.

 

James Jackson and Hannah Liliot had 7 known children:

  1. William Jackson was baptised on 23 May 1794 in West Grinstead and buried there as an infant on 27 June 1794.

  2. David Jackson was baptised on 15 November 1795 in West Grinstead.  He died in 1882,  In 1841 he was an agricultural labourer living at Loyts in West Grinstead.  In 1851 he was still living at Loyts Farm and he was then and unmarried 58 year old agricultural labourer.  His place of birth was recorded as Ashurst in the 1851 census.

  3. Martha Jackson was baptised on 1 October 1797 in West Grinstead.

  4. Ruth Jackson was baptised on 30 November 1806 in West Grinstead.  She died in 1843.  Ruth married Thomas Stringer by banns on 8 June 1823 in West Grinstead.

  5. Hannah Jackson was baptised on 7 August 1808 in West Grinstead.  Hannah married Edward Richardson by banns on 20 November 1832 in Ashington, Sussex.  They were both then of Ashington.  When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in Wiston and Edward was a farm labourer.  He was born about 1800 in Washington, Sussex.  Also living with the couple in 1851 was a 36 year old unmarried lodger, William Broadbridge.

  6. Jesse Jackson was baptised on 12 June 1814 in Ashurst.  He died in 1859.

    Jesse married Eliza Harding on 28 April 1837 in Shipley.

    Eliza was baptised on 23 April 1815 in Shipley and was the daughter of Robert Harding (1786-1869) and Catherine Worsfold (1792-1866).

    Jesse and Eliza had the following children:

    1. Hannah Jackson was born in 1837 in Washington.  She died in 1913.

      Hannah married Thomas James Thornes in 1857.

      Thomas and Hannah had the following children:

      1. Thomas Henry Thornes

      2. Harry Thornes

      3. William Thornes

      4. Alice Thornes

      5. Ellen Thornes

      6. George Thornes

      7. Ann Thornes

      8. Rosa Thornes

    2. Emily Jackson was baptised on 2 February 1840 in Thakeham.

      Emily married Peter Short in 1858 in Thakeham.

      Peter was baptised on 14 May 1837 in West Chiltington and was the son of Samuel Short and Leah Wadey.

    3. Harriott Jackson was baptised on 1 February 1842 in Thakeham.

      Harriet married William West in 1877.

      William and Harriet had the following children:

      1. Harriet West

      2. Edith West

      3. William West

    4. Mary Ann Jackson was baptised on 22 November 1844 in Thakeham.

    5. Ellen Jackson was baptised on 16 May 1847 in Thakeham.  Ellen married Stephen Street on 16 May 1847 in Shipley.  Stephen and Ellen had the following children:

      1. Emily Street

      2. Frederick Street

      3. Ruth Street

    6. Walter Jackson was baptised on 9 September 1849 in Thakeham.

      Walter married Mary Dale on 17 October 1874 in Wiston.

      Mary was born in 1853 and was the daughter of Allen Dale and Elizabeth.

      Walter and Mary had the following children:

      1. Elizabeth Jackson

      2. Allen Jackson

      3. Ellen Jackson

      4. Annie Jackson

      5. Walter Jackson

      6. John Jackson

      7. Jesse Jackson

    7. Eliza Jackson was born on 1 October 1851 and baptised on 23 November 1851 in Thakeham.  She died in 1890.

      Eliza married James Juden on 30 September 1874 in Wiston.

      James was born on 14 October 1846 and baptised on 22 November 1845 in Wiston.  He was the son of William Juden (1815-1902) and Christianna Clear (1817-1900).  He died in 1917.  James married again to Sarah Ann Witten.

      James and Eliza had the following children:

      1. Eliza Ellen Juden was baptised on 17 January 1875 in Wiston.  She died on 28 June 1937 in Southwick.  Eliza married William George Rapley on 5 July 1899 in Washington.  William was born on 9 July 1872 in Washington and was the son of Benjamin Rapley (1835-1889) and Ursula Evershed (1842-1931).  He died on 26 November 1935 in Southwick.

      2. Harriet Juden was baptised on 10 December 1876 in Wiston.  She died in 1945.

      3. Louisa Jane Juden was born in 1878 in Wiston.

      4. Gertrude Juden was born on 29 November 1880 in Wiston.

      5. Rose Juden was born on 21 August 1882 in Washington.  She died on 24 June 1971 in Pasadena, California, USA.

      6. Kate Juden was born on 17 March 1884 in Washington.  She died on 5 August 1969 in Glendale, California.

      7. Christiana Juden was baptised on 30 August 1885 in Washington.  She married Charles F. Spencer.

      8. William Ernest Juden was born on 26 May 1887 in Washington.  He died on 13 November 1965.  William married Mary Style on 4 November 1916 in Washington.

      9. Winifred Juden was born on 23 December 1889 in Washington.

      10. Horace John Juden was born in 1890 in Washington and died there in 1895.

    8. Allan Jackon was baptised on 5 February 1854 in Thakeham.  Allan married Sarah Jane Crampton in 1893.  Allan and Sarah had the following daughter:

      1. Mary Jane Jackson

    9. Fanny Jackson was baptised on 13 April 1856 in Warminghurst.

      Fanny married George Goodger.

      George and Fanny had the following children:

      1. Alice F. Goodger

      2. Rose Ellen Goodger

      3. Raymond J. Goodger

      4. Sydney W. Goodger

      5. Ethel F. M. Goodger

    10. Elizabeth Jackson was baptised on 4 May 1858 in Warminghurst.

      Elizabeth married Harry Daniel Langford in 1879.

      Harry and Elizabeth had the following children:

      1. Richard Langford

      2. Fred Langford

      3. Kate Langford

  7. John Jackson was bapitsed on 21 March 1819 in Washington, Sussex.  He died in 1892.

    John married Ellen Burtenshaw on 12 October 1841 in Thakeham.

    Ellen was born in 1818 in West Grinstead.  She was buried on 22 February 1882 in Wiston.

    John and Ellen had the following children:

    1. James Jackson

    3. Esther Jackson

    4. Thomas Jackson

    5. Mary Jackson

    6. Elizabeth Jackson
