Stephen INGE (1875-1955)

and Emily Jane SAFFERY (1876-1933)

Stephen Inge and Emily Jane Saffrey married in the fourth quarter of 1899 in the Canterbury registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Stephen Inge was born in the fourth quarter of 1875 in Whitstable, Kent.  He was the son of George Inge (c1846-?) and Charlotte Barrett (c1843-?).  Stephen died aged 79 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1955 in the Canterbury registration district.  At the time of the 1881 census he was a 5 year old scholar and living with his parents at Highgate in Whitstable.  In 1891 he was a 16 year old farm labourer and living with his parents at 1 Farm Cottages, Vincent and Hengrove within the parish of Margate, Kent.

Emily Jane Saffery was born in the fourth quarter 1876 in Broad Oak, Sturry, Kent.  She was the daughter of Henry Saffrey (c1854-?) and Mary Ann Danton (c1855-?).  Emily died aged 58 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1933 in the Canterbury registration district.  When the 1881 census was recorded she was 4 years old and living with her parents at Blanland Farm House, Sturry.  In 1891 she was 13 years old and living with her parents at Harefield, Sturry.  Her maternal grandmother Mary Ann Danton (c1824-?) was also living with the family in 1891.

When the 1901 census was recorded the couple were living at 3 Dane John Cottages, Gordon Road, Canterbury.  Stephen was 25 year old labourer in a tannery and Emily J. was 24.  His place of birth was given as Whitstable and hers as Broad Oak.

In 1911 the couple and 2 children (Hilda Rose and Percy George) were living at 3 Dane John Cottages, Gordon Road, Canterbury.  Stephen was a 35 year old tanner's labourer and Emily Jane was 34.  They said they had been married 11 years and had had 2 children.  Stephen's place of birth was given as Whitstable and Emily's as Broadoak Sturry.

Stephen Inge and Emily Jane Saffrey had 2 known children:

  1. Hilda Rose Inge was born about 1906/7 in Canterbury.  She was 4 years old in 1911.

  2. Percy George Inge was born on 3 August 1909 in Canterbury.  He died on 1 September 1953.  When the 1911 census was recorded he was a year old.

Percy married Dorothy Barker in the first quarter of 1931 in the Canterbury registration district.

Dorothy was born on 20 November 1905 and was the daughter of Frederick Joseph Baker (1860-?) and Emily Solly (1861-?).  She died in 1951.

Percy and Dorothy had the following daughter:

    1. Joan Inge married Robert George Dunmall (1937-1995).

Robert George was the son of Reginald George Dunmall (1909-1982) and Dora Mabel Humphrey (1900-1981).

Robert and Joan have the following son:

      1. Paul Stephen Dunmall (Paul and I share common ancestors, Edward Dadswell (1659-1736) and Elizabeth Elliott (1649-1737), who were my 8xggp's and Paul's 7xggp's.)
