George Hyland and Elizabeth Stanley may have been my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 30 November 1723 in Ringmer, Sussex.  After Elizabeth's death, George married Elizabeth Walls by banns on 21 October 1755 in Ringmer.

George Hyland's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  (See below for details of 3 possible baptisms.)

Elizabeth Stanley was baptised on 14 March 1685/6 in Ringmer, Sussex.  She was the daughter of 5 234 John Stanley (1656-?) and Elizabeth Tanner (1656-?).  She was buried on 18 August 1752 in Ringmer by the name of Elizabeth Highland.  Before her marriage she had a son:

1. John Stanley was baptised on 8 September 1717 in Ringmer.  Might he have married Mary Pricknall or Pucknall on 10 October 1752 at St. Anne's in Lewes, Sussex?

Elizabeth Walls may have been baptised on 25 January 1724/5 in Falmer, Sussex and have been the daughter of John Walls and Mary.  An Elizabeth Hyland was buried in Ringmer on 11 March 1783.

George Hyland and Elizabeth Stanley had 3 known children:

1. Ann Highland, my possible 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 14 October 1724 in Ringmer.  She may have married my 6x Great Grandfather John Beck in 1754, but his name was recorded as John Boxall in the marriage register.  (They have their own page.)

2. George Hyland was baptised on 1 June 1726 in Ringmer.  He married twice.  Firstly to Elizabeth Gower in 1749 and then to Ann Durrant in 1757.  (They have their own page.)

3. William Hiland was baptised on 28 October 1728 in Ringmer and buried there on 11 December 1731.

George Hyland and Elizabeth Walls had 2 known children:

4. John Hyland was baptised on 6 December 1756 in Ringmer.  His parents were named as George and Elizabeth in the baptism register.  The Laughton burial register records that John son of George and Elizabeth Hylands was buried on 26 March 1764.

5. William Hyland was baptised on 1 September 1760 in Ringmer.  His parents were named as George and Elizabeth in the baptism register.  He may have been the infant William Highland who was buried on 29 September 1760 in Ringmer.  Or William may have married Jane Sexton by banns on 17 October 1798 in Ringmer.  They were both then of Ringmer.  Then as a widower, he may have married Mary Reed, spinster, on 9 September 1805 in Laughton.  They were both of Laughton and both made their (X) marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Bexhill and William Page who both signed their names.

   William and Mary had the following children:

   1. Richard Hylands was buried as an infant on 17 November 1805 in Laughton.  Both his parents were named in the burial register.

   2. Robert Hylands was baptised on 24 April 1808 in Laughton and buried there as an infant on 26 May 1808.

Could the following be related to George Hyland:

William Highlands married Sarah Hapgood on 26 December 1769 in Ringmer.  They had the following children:

1. Samuel Highlands was baptised on 17 December 1771 in Laughton.

2. James Highlands was baptised on 29 March 1778 in East Hoathly.

3. Sarah Highland was baptised on 10 November 1782 in East Hoathly.

4. Elizabeth Highland was baptised on 6 March 1785 in East Hoathly.  It was noted in the baptism register that her parents were paupers.

On 26 December 1769 (confirmed 11 January 1770) a Removal Order was issued by the Overseers of Ringmer to East Hoathly, for the removal of William Hyland and wife Sarah.  On 10 January 1770 William and Sarah, of East Hoathly, were granted a Settlement Certificate by the Overseers of Laughton.

George Hyland married Mary Arnold on 10 April 1785 in Laughton.  He was then a bachelor of Ripe and she a spinster of Laughton.  They both made their (X) marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were Daniel Finch (marked) and John Vine (signed).

Mary Hylands of Laughton died aged 53 years and was buried on 15 July 1818 in Laughton, therefore, born about 1765.

George and Mary may have had the following children:

1. Henry Hylands was baptised on 5 June 1791 in Laughton.  His parents were named as George and Ann (should his mother's name have been Mary?).  He was buried as an infant on 10 June 1791 in Ringmer.

2. Mary Hylands was baptised on 21 October 1792 in Laughton.  Her parents were named as George and Mary.  Was she buried as Mary Highlands on 25 October 1797 in Laughton?

3. Harriet Hylands may have been part of this family.  She was of Laughton when she died aged 18 years and was buried on 21 April 1814 in Laughton.

Other possible parents of George Hyland:

John Hiland and Joan Kennard married on 9 February 1695/6 in Hollington, Sussex.

William Hyland and Mary Burges married by banns on 8 February 1693/4 in Ticehurst, Sussex.  They were both of Ticehurst.  They had the following children:

1. Mary Hyland was baptised on 20 March 1694 in Ticehurst.

2. Elizabeth Hyland was baptised on 14 December 1696 in Ticehurst.

3. William Hyland was baptised on 19 November 1698 in Ticehurst.  He may have married Hannah Lulham on 7 January 1726/7 in Ticehurst.

William Highland and Elizabeth Claget married by licence on 3 September 1691 at St. Anne's in Lewes, Sussex.  He was then of Selscomb (could this be Sedlescombe) and she of Burwash.  Their marriage licence was issued on 2 September 1691 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded her name as Elizabeth Claggett.  Might William have been born in 1670 and have been the son of Anthony Hylands?  The following burials took place in Sedlescombe:  Elizabeth Hiland on 9 November 1702; William Hiland on 16 February 1704; Elizabeth Hiland on 10 October 1705; Jane Hiland on 23 April 1712; John Hiland on 6 September 1708; and Ann Hiland on 20 March 1722.

Tupen Hyland and Ann Penburkell married on 27 November 1690 in Rye, Sussex.  She was then a spinster.

William Hyland and Ann Brackfield may have married by licence dated 17 June 1689.  It was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes and recorded that he was a bachelor of Selmeston, Sussex and she a spinster of Folkington, Sussex.

Thomas Hiland and Mary Stone married on 24 April 1688 in Penhurst, Sussex.

William Hyland and Mary Starr married by licence on 24 May 1686 in Dallington, Sussex.  He was then of Dallington and she of Burwash.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, and strangely, it recorded William was of Ditchling!  Surety for the licence was provided by William himself and John Daw of Dallington.  They had the following child:

1. Mary Hyland was baptised on 30 January 1690 in Dallington.

John Hyland and Mary Hayward married on 26 July 1685 in Burwash, Sussex.

Samuel Hiland and Ann Tichurst married on 3 June 1684 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.

Samuel Hyland, esq and Rebecca Collier of Hawkhurst, married on 18 June 1682 in Bodiam, Sussex.  The will of Samuel Hyland of Bodiam was proved on 7 July 1693.

John Hyland and Elizabeth Morris married on 6 June 1682 in Westfield, Sussex.  They had the following children:

1. George Hyland was baptised on 15 November 1685 in Westfield.

2. John Hyland was baptised on 20 October 1689 in Westfield.

3. Elizabeth Hyland was baptised on 8 March 1691 in Westfield.

4. Jenny Hyland was baptised on 5 June 1696 in Ore, Sussex.

5. William Hyland was baptised on 2 September 1698 in Ore.

An Elizabeth Hyland was buried on 12 June 1695 in Westfield.  Was this of mother or daughter?  If of the mother, did John remarry and move to Ore, or are they 2 separate families?

William Hyland and Lettice Timson married on 8 April 1680 in Dallington, Sussex.  She was then a spinster and they were both of Burwash.

John Highland and Sarah Bull married on 21 March 1677/8 in Dallington, Sussex.  They had the following children:

1. John Hyland was baptised on 16 March 1678 in Dallington.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

2. William Hyland was baptised on 24 January 1685 in Dallington.

3. Mary Hyland was baptised on 16 March 1688 in Dallington.

John Hiland and Ann Hunt married on 13 October 1674 in Burwash, Sussex.

Clement Hyland and Eleanor Hilton married on 15 January 1673/4 in Rottingdean, Sussex.  They had the following child:

1. William Highland was baptised on 6 March 1674 in Rottingdean.

   William married Mercy Geere by licence on 2 October 1701 in Rottingdean, Sussex.  They were both then of Rottingdean.  Their marriage licence was dated 30 September 1701 and was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  It recorded that William was a bachelor and Mercy a spinster and they were both of Rottingdean.

   They had the following child:

   1. Robert Hyland was mention in the 1727 will of his Uncle Robert Geere, gent of Rodmell.

John Highland and Dorothy Baker may have married by licence dated 18 May 1673.  It was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes and recorded that they were both of Iford, Sussex.  Surety was provided by John himself and William Barnes of Lewes.  They may have had the following children:

1. John Hiland was baptised on 10 June 1677 in Iford.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

2. Samuell Hiland was baptised on 2 May 1680 in Iford.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

Anthony Hylands and Jane Blewett married on 30 September 1669 in Salehurst, Sussex.  They had the following children:

1. William Hyland was baptised on 13 November 1670 in Salehurst.  Might he have married Elizabeth Claget in 1691?

2. Anthony Hyland was baptised on 27 October 1672 in Salehurst.  He married Elizabeth Roads on 1 May 1693 in Burwash, Sussex.  She was then of Mayfield, Sussex.  They had the following children:

   1. Ann Hyland was mentioned in the 1701 will of her Grandmother Ann Roades, widow of Burwash.  (Ann Roades appointed her son Batchellor Roades and William Hyland a Mercer of Sedlescombe, as the executors of her will.)

   2. William Hyland was mentioned in the 1701 will of his Grandmother.

Samuel Hyland and Elizabeth Weekes married on 29 January 1667/8 in Fairlight, Sussex.  She was of Winchelsea, Sussex.

William Hyland and Mary Taylor married on 9 January 1667/8 in Dallington.  He was then of Ticehurst and she of Burwash.
