Walter Owen HUMPHREY (1868-1939)

and Mary Matilda POLLINGTON (1875-?)

Walter Owen Humphrey and Mary Pollington married in the second quarter of 1895 in the Ticehurst registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Walter Owen Humphrey was born in the fourth quarter of 1868 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Owen Humphrey (c1832-1895) and Barbara Curwen (1832-1917).  He died aged 70 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1939 in the Uckfield registration district.  When the 1871 census was recorded he was 2 years old and living with his parents at Bradle's Oak Cottage, Wadhurst.  The 1881 census recorded that Owen was a 12 year old scholar and living with his parents at Flattenden Cottage, Wadhurst.  In 1891 Owen was an unmarried 22 year old farm labourer and living with his parents at Lodge Hill Cottage in Wadhurst.

Mary Matilda Pollington was born in the second quarter 1875 in Mark Cross, Sussex and baptised on 6 June 1875 in Mayfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of David Pollington (1840-1889) and Elizabeth Dadswell (1849-?).  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.  She may have died aged 68 years and her death registered as Mary J. Humphrey in the second quarter of 1943 in the Uckfield registration district.  When the 1881 census was recorded Mary M. Pollington was a 5 year old scholar and living with her parents at Scrag Oak Farm Cottage in Wadhurst.  In 1891 Mary was 16 years old and living with her widowed mother and siblings are Barricks Cottages in Wadhurst.  Her place of birth was then given as Rotherfield.

The 1901 census recorded that the couple and 4 children (Elizabeth M., Owen, Frank and Dora Mabel) were living at Flattenden Cottage, Wadhurst.  Owen was then a 32 year old shepherd and Mary was 25.  They were all born in Wadhurst.  Mary's widowed mother was living in the next property on the enumerators route.

In 1911 the couple and 6 children (Lizzie, Owen, Frank, Dora Mabel, George and Albert James) were living at Beals Oaks, Wadhurst.  Walter Owen was a 42 year old farm labourer and Mary was 34.  They mentioned they had been married for 16 years and had had 6 children, all of whom were living.  Mary's place of birth was given as Mark Cross and the rest of the family were all born in Wadhurst.

Walter Owen Humphrey and Mary Matilda Pollington had 6 known children:

  1. Elizabeth M. Humphrey was born about 1896 in Wadhurst.  She was 5 years old in 1901.  In 1911, Lizzy Humphrey was 16 years old.

  2. Owen Humphrey was born about 1897 in Wadhurst.  He was 4 years old in 1901.  In 1911 he was 14 years old.  He died aged 70 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1967 in the Hastings registration district.

  3. Frank Humphrey was born about 1898 in Wadhurst.  He was 3 years old in 1901.  In 1911 he was 13 years old.

  4. Dora Mabel Humphrey was born in 1900 in Wadhurst.  She died in 1981.  When the 1901 census was recorded she was 9 months old.  At the time of the 1911 census she was 10 years old.

Dora Mabel married Reginald John Dunmall in 1934.

Reginald John was born in 1909 in Wadhurst and was the son of Edwin Dunmall (1863-1950) and Kate Louisa Holden (1879-1975).  He died in 1982.  When the 1911 census was recorded he was 2 years old and living with his parents and elder siblings at 2 Savages Pit, Wadhurst.

Reginald and Dora had the following son:

    1. Robert George Dunmall (1937-1995).

      Robert married Joan Inge.

Joan's parents were Percy George Inge (1909-1953) and Dorothy Baker (1905-1951).

Robert and Joan have the following son:

      1. Paul Stephen Dunmall (Paul and I share common ancestors, Edward Dadswell (1659-1736) and Elizabeth Elliott (1649-1737), who were my 8xggp's and Paul's 7xggp's.)

  5. George Humphrey was born about 1902 in Wadhurst.  He was 9 years old in 1911.
