John HOWELL (c1645-?)

and Lettice (?-?)

John Howell and Lettice may have been my 8x Great Grandparents.  They may have married about or before 1669.  No possible marriage has been found in the IGI or the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.

John Howell's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He died after 1685 and was possibly buried on 25 August 1688 in Brighton.  In 1675 he was described as John the younger, therefore, I assume his father may also have been a John Howell who was still alive at that point.  Might his grandfather have been John Howell, brewer of Brighton who left a will which was proved on 14 December 1659 (PROB 11/296), or maybe Henry Howell a Brighton fisherman who left a will which was proved on 11 February 1650 (ref PROB 11/211)?  (When I am a little more sure of my Howell ancestry I will obtain copies of the 2 wills.)

Lettice's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died after 1685.  There were 4 Lettice's baptised in Brighton at about the right time - see notes below.  I think she may have been Lettice Deane baptised 1646 and the daughter of Thomas Deane.

John Howell and Lettice had 7 known children:

  1. Ann Howell was baptised on 14 September 1669 in Brighton.  She may have married James Patchin on 30 September 1696/7 (IGI says 1693).  At the time he was of Rodmell and she of Brighton.

  2. Catherine Howell was baptised on 12 March 1670/1 in Brighton.

  3. John Howell was baptised on 27 October 1672 in Brighton and may have been buried there on 31 December 1684.

  4. Mary Howell was baptised on 16 May 1674/5 in Brighton.  Did she marry John Rudley on 22 October 1693 in Stanmer Sussex?  They were both then of Brighton.

  5. Thomas Howell was baptised on 30 March 1679 in Brighton.

  6. Lettice Howell was baptised on 3 April 1681 in Brighton and buried there on 15 June 1681.

  7. John Howell, my possible 7x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 3 January 1686/7 in Brighton.  He married Anne Plaw in 1709.  (They have their own page.)

Lettice Comfort was baptised on 7 January 1638/9 in Brighton, the daughter of John Comfort and Mary Newton.

Lettice Friend was baptised on 16 January 1644/5 in Brighton, the daughter of Richard Friend and Lettice Howell.  They married on 4 April 1643 in Brighton.  Lettice Howell was baptised on 19 July 1623 in Brighton and was the daughter of Henry Howell and Joane TullLettice Friend married Nicholas Morris on 15 November 1664 in Brighton.

Lettice Deane was baptised on 16 February 1645/6 in Brighton, the daughter of Thomas Deane.  Thomas may have married before 1626

Lettice Carden was baptised on 18 November 1649 in Brighton, the daughter of Edward Carden.
