and Elizabeth (c1550-1610)
William Holney and Elizabeth were my 11x Great Grandparents.
They may have married in the 1560's or early 1570's, and possibly in the
Henfield, Sussex area.
William Holney was of Henfield, Sussex. He left a will dated 21
June 1609 and proved at Lewes on 22 May 1610 (ref A13, 57). The
overseers of his will were Thomas Canon and Thomas Goffe.
In his will he mentioned his sister as widow Mercer. William
was the overseer to the 1582 will of William Arnold of
Elizabeth was appointed the executor of her husband's will, but she
had died before it was proved. Widow Holney was buried on 4 March
1609/10 in Henfield.
William Holney and
Elizabeth had 3 known children and possibly more:
A daughter the wife of [blank] Gratwicke was mentioned in her
father's will. They had 5 known children, 1 of whom was lame.
She was most probably Agnes Holney who married John Gratwicke on
6 June 1595 in Henfield.
John and Agnes may have had the following children:
John Gratwick was baptised in July 1598 in Henfield.
Owen Gratwick was baptised on 8 February 1600/1 in
Katherine Holney was named in her father's will of 1609, at which
time she was unmarried. She may have married John Wester on 6
July 1612 in Henfield.
Jane Holney, my 10x Great Grandmother, married
Stephen Woolgar in 1593. (They have their own page.)
Jone Holney may have been part of this family although
she was not mentioned in the 1609 will of William. She
married Thomas Goff on 18 January 1601/2 in Henfield.
Thomas and Joan may have had the following children:
Joan Goff was baptised on 21 August 1616 in Henfield.
Sarah Goffe was baptised on 23 June 1622 in Henfield.
Richard Holney may have been part of this family,
although he was not mentioned in the 1609 will of William.
He married Margaret Nicholas by licence on 23 February
1608/9 in Henfield. Their marriage licence was issued on 16
February 1608/9 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that he was
a yeoman of Henfield and she was a spinster of Felpham.
Richard and Margaret may have had the following children:
Thomas Holney was born on the afternoon of 24 March at
9 of the clock and baptised on 20 April 1610 in Henfield.
Richard Holney was baptised on 25 February 1612/3 in
Henfield and buried there on 28 March 1613.
Frances Holney was baptised on 21 August 1614 in
There was also another Richard Holney of similar age
who was the Rector of Woodmancote and who had 2 children baptised there
in 1611 and 1614.
Richard may also have married Catherine
Ashbourne by licence on 22 April 1623 in Woodmancote, Sussex.
Their licence was issued on 21 April 1623 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes,
which noted that he was a barber of Henfield, and she a widow of the
same place. He may also have married Eleanor Holden
on 1 December 1628 in Henfield.
