Richard HOLMAN (1763-1809)
and Amy COMBER (1765-1811)

Richard Holman and
Amy Cumber married on 26 October 1785 in Worth, Sussex.
At the time Richard was a bachelor and Amy a spinster, and they were both of
Worth. The witnesses to the marriage were Philip Denman and
Mark Brooker.
(They were not my direct ancestors. Amy was the grand niece of my 6x
great grandmother, Anne Comber.)
Richard Holman was baptised on 8 May 1763 in Worth. He was
the son of John Holman
(1718-1797) and Sarah Harland
(1731-1806). He was buried on
9 June 1809 in Worth (or was it 1808?). There was another Richard
Holman baptised on 20 March 1763 in Worth, the son of
Thomas Holman
and Ruth Page.
Amy Comber was born on 1 April 1765 and baptised privately on 3 April
1765 in Ardingly, Sussex. She was the daughter of
Thomas
Comber (1729-1807) and
Amy Creasy
(1732-?). She was buried on 16 February 1811 in Worth.
Richard Holman and Amy Comber
had 8 known children:

Ann Holman was baptised on 28 April 1786 in Worth. She may
have married Henry Humphery by banns on 15 April 1807 in Worth.
He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Worth.
The witnesses to the marriage were John Holman and Frances
Burgess. When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were
living in Horne, Surrey, Henry was a 68 year old labourer and Ann was said
to be 67 years old, and they were both born in Worth.

Thomas Holeman was baptised on 3 August 1788 in Worth. He may
have married Amelia Potter by banns on 17 June 1813 in Worth.
He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Worth.
The witnesses to the marriage were John Holman and Sarah
Vallance.

Richard Holeman was baptised on 31 July 1791 in Worth.

George Holman was baptised on 29 December 1793 in Worth. He
died in 1865 and was buried in East Grinstead, Sussex
George married Ann Skilton on 1 November 1816 in Chiddingstone,
Kent.
Ann was born about 1794 in Chiddingstone. She died in 1869 and was
buried in East Grinstead.
When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living on Copthorne
Common in Worth and George and Ann were both 57 years old and both
hawkers. Also with them on census night in 1851 were 2
granddaughters, 11 year old Mary Ann Davis and 7 year old Mary
Davis. The family were then living next door to George's brother
John.
George and Ann had the following children:

Eliza Holman was baptised on 12 December 1819 in Worth.

Amey Edith Holman was born in 1821 in Worth. she was buried on 8
November 1910 in Hailsham, Sussex.
Amey married Samuel Shoubridge on 5 November 1838.
Samuel was baptised on 31 October 1817 in Chiddingstone. He was
buried in June 1883 in Worth.
When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living in Worth and
Samuel was an agricultural labourer.
Samuel and Amey had the following children:

Ann Shoubridge was baptised on 9 June 1839 in Crawley Down,
Sussex. At the time of the 1851 census she was an 11 year old
scholar. Ann married Thomas Berbery. He was born
about 1837 in Worth.

Eliza Shoubridge was baptised on 12 September 1841 in Worth.
In 1851 she was a 9 year old scholar. Eliza married Robert
Howick.

Frances Ellen Shoubridge was baptised on 9 September 1843 in
Crawley, Sussex. She was buried on 9 July 1912 in Burstow,
Surrey. In 1851 she was a 7 year old scholar. Frances
Ellen married Isaac Budgen on 26 January 1841. Isaac was
baptised on 21 March 1841 in West Hoathly. He was buried on 29
January 1924 in Copthorne, Sussex.

Amey Shoubridge was baptised on 12 October 1845 in Crawley
Down. She died in 1889 in Tonbridge, Kent. She was a 5
year old scholar in 1851. Amey married Alexander Phillips
on 28 February 1865. He was born in 1839 in London.

Samuel Shoubridge was baptised on 25 December 1847 in Crawley
Down. He was buried on 21 December 1862 in Worth. He was
not living with his parents at the time of the 1851 census and I have
not found him elsewhere in the 1851 census.

Richard Shoubridge was baptised on 22 December 1850 in Crawley
Down. He was living with his parents and elder sisters in 1851,
but I can not make out his age in the census as it has been smudged.

Mary Shoubridge was baptised on 19 December 1852 in Crawley
Down. She was buried in Worth on 20 May 1855.

James Shoubridge was baptised on 7 January 1855 in Crawley
Down.
-
George Shoubridge was born on 31 July 1857 in Redhill, Surrey
and baptised on 6 September 1857 in Worth.
He died on 22/23 October 1933 in Redhill, Surrey. George married
Emma Charlwood on 21 October 1878 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

William Shoubridge was baptised on 4 September 1859 in Crawley
Down and buried there on 20 December 1862.

James Holman was baptised on 9 January 1825 in Worth. In
1851 he was an unmarried 26 year old hawker living with his parents.

Ann Holman was baptised on 27 January 1828 in Worth.
-
Ellen Holman was baptised on 13 February 1831 in Worth and buried
there on 9 June 1831.

Richard Holman was baptised on 5 April 1832 in Worth.

Mary Holman was baptised on 26 April 1835 in Worth. In 1851
she was a 16 year old hawker living at home.

John Hollman was baptised on 18 September 1796 in Worth.
John married Amelia/Emily/Emma Collings. She
was born about 1808/9 in Worth.
When the 1851 census was record the family were living next door to John's
brother George on Copthorne Common in Worth. John was then a 54 year
old agricultural labourer. Emma was then 43 years old.
John and Emma had the following children:

Henry Holman was baptised on 3 May 1829 in Worth and buried there
on 16 April 1830.

William Holman was baptised on 5 May 1833 in Worth. In 1851
he was a 17 year old agricultural labourer. He married Sarah
Budgen on 25 August 1856. Sarah was baptised on 21 October
1838 in West Hoathly. William and Sarah had the following
children:

George Holman was born in 1864 in Worth.

Obadiah J. Holman was born in 1866 in Burstow. He
married Mary Ann Marden in 1886.

Sarah A. Holman was born in 1868 in Burstow.

Thomas Holman was born in 1871 in Worth.

Henry Holman was baptised on 12 April 1835 in Worth.

Harriet Holman was baptised on 24 September 1837 in Worth.
When the 1851 census was recorded she was 13 year old.

Thomas Holman was baptised on 24 November 1839 in Worth. He
was 11 years old at the time of the 1851 census.

Richard Holman was baptised on 1 May 1842 in Worth. He was
8 years old in 1851.

George Holman was baptised on 2 June 1844 in Worth. In 1851
he was 5 years old.

James Holman was baptised on 4 October 1846 in Worth. He
was 4 years old in 1851.

Emily Holman was baptised on 2 July 1848 in Worth. She was
3 years old in 1851.
-
Sarah Ann Holman was baptised on 4 July 1852 in Worth and buried
there on 15 February 1857.

Sarah Holman was baptised on 2 February 1800 in Worth. She
may have married Thomas Gibbs by banns on 12 April 1819 in East
Grinstead. He was then a bachelor of Lingfield, Surrey and she a
spinster of East Grinstead.

Mary Holman was baptised on 20 February 1803 in Worth.
-
William Holman was born on 27 December and baptised on 30 December
1803 in Worth.
