William HOLLOCK (c1570-1647)

and Joan JACKMAN (c1575-1627)

and Ann (c1575-1630)

and Mary (c1575-1638)

and Ann (c1575-?)

William Hollock and Joan Jackman were my 11x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 25 July 1597 in Pevensey, Sussex.  After Joan's death William married Ann Jarvise by licence on 6 May 1628 at St. Thomas Cliffe in Lewes, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on 15 April 1628 in South Malling and recorded that William was of South Malling and Ann Jarvis a widow of Heathfield, Sussex.  He, or his son, may then have married Mary Barsye on 7 October 1630 in Westmeston, Sussex.  Mary was a widow.  And finally, William married Ann Roberts by licence on 24 September 1639 in Southease, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 21 September 1639 and recorded that William Hollocke was a yeoman of South Malling and Ann Robertes a widow of Southease.

William Hollock's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been born in Herstmonceux, Sussex and have been the son of William Hollock (c1545-1611) and Cicely Pellinge (c1545-1611).  They had married in Herstmonceux in 1571 and were most probably buried in Beddingham, Sussex.  Cicely was the daughter of Richard Pelling and Joan.  William was buried on about 10 May 1647 in Glynde.  He left a will which was proved on 2 July 1647.

Joan Jackman's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 9 February 1626/7 in Glynde and it was recorded in the burial register that she was Joann wife of Willm. Hollock.

Ann's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 27 February 1629/30 in Glynde and it was recorded in the burial register that she was Ann wife of Willm. Hollock of South Malling.  As Ann Amore she may have previously married Thomas Jervice on 5 November 1598 in Seaford, Sussex.

Mary's date and place of birth/baptism and previous marriage are unknown, to me.  The Glynde burial register records that a Goodie Hollicke was buried on 30 September 1638 - might this have been Mary's burial?

Ann's date and place of birth/baptism and first marriage are unknown, to me.  As Ann Dumbrell, widow, she may have previously married Bartholomew Roberts of Old Shoreham, Sussex on 3 October 1627 in Southease.  She was mentioned in her husband William Hollock's will.

William Hollock and Joan Jackman had 6 known children:

  1. Anne Hollock was named in her father's will as his eldest daughter.  She married Abel Parson.  They had the following children:

    1. Judeth Parson was named in her grandfather's will of 1647 and was probably over 21 at that point.  She married John Sims on 18 October 1651 in Westham, Sussex.

    2. William Parson was named in his grandfather's will and was under 21 in 1647.

    3. Joane Parsone was buried on 16 September 1630 in Glynde.

    4. Abell Parson was baptised on 20 March 1629/30 in Glynde.  He was named in his grandfather's will.

    5. Mary Parson was named in her grandfather's will.

  2. Susan Hollock, my 10x Great Grandmother, was named in her father's will and her husband was appointed an overseer of the will.  She married John Brightridge in 1626.  (They have their own page.)  None of their children were named in William's will.

    1. William Battum or Bathum was named in his grandfather's will.

  4. Elizabeth Hollock was named in her father's will and her husband was appointed and overseer of the will.  She married Isaac Baldy.  None of their children were named in William's 1647 will.  They may have been the parents of John Bolde who in 1666 married Mary Brightridge, the daughter of Elizabeth's sister Susan.  They may also have had a son named William Balldy who was nominated an overseer to the 1671 will of William Hollocke.

  5. Joan Hollock was baptised on 13 April 1616 in Glynde.  The baptism register recorded that her father was of Ranscombe in South Malling.  She married Thomas Baker on 13 October 1635 in Beddingham, Sussex.  In her father's will their surname was recorded as Barker.

Thomas and Joan had the following children:

    1. Thomas Baker was named in his grandfather's will.

    2. William Baker was named in his grandfather's will.

    3. Jone Baker was named in her grandfather's will.

William and Joan had the following children:

    1. William Hollocke left a will dated 20 January 1670/1 which was proved on 16 March 1671, at which time he was of Ranscombe in the parish of South Malling.  He appointed his brother Jeremy Hollock as the sole executor of his will and named his 2 sisters, Joan wife of William Grover and Elizabeth Hollock.

    2. Joan Hollocke was mentioned in her brother's will as his eldest sister.  As Gonn Hallick she married William Grover on 23 February 1668 at St. Thomas in Lewes, Sussex.  He was then of Glynde and she of South Malling.  He was an overseer to his brother-in-law's 1671 will.  They had the following children:

      1. William Grover was baptised on 13 April 1671 in Glynde.

      2. Elizabeth Grover was baptised on 5 NOvember 1673 in Glynde.

      3. John Grover was baptised on 1 November 1677 in Glynde

      4. John Grover was baptised on 23 May 1681 in Glynde.

    3. Jeremiah Hollick was appointed executor of his brother William's will.  He was buried on 4 February 1681 in Glynde, but only his name was recorded in the burial register.

    6. Mary Hollocke was buried on 10 March 1657/8 in Glynde and it was recorded in the burial register that she was a young daughter of William Hollocke.

    7. Anne Hollock was buried on 31 October 1663 in Glynde and it was recorded in the burial register that she was the daughter of William Hollock.
