William HOLDER (1806-1875)

and Esther MILLS (1809-1875)

William Holder and Esther Mills married by banns on 20 June 1829 in Pulborough, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ann Holder and James Ovington.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Holder was baptised on 27 April 1806 in Pulborough.  He was the son of Richard Holder (1780-1866) and  Ann Cheeseman.  Richard died aged 69 years and was buried on 27 February 1875 in Pulborough.

Esther Mills was baptised on 13 April 1808 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Richard Mills (1777-1854) and Phebe White (1778-1849).  Esther died aged 68 years and was buried in Pulborough on 1 April 1875.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and their children were living at Pot Common in Pulborough, next door to Allen Older and his wife Sarah.  William was then an agricultural labourer.  Also with them on census night was 25 year old Thomas Older who was an agricultural labourer.  Thomas was most probably William's younger brother.

In 1861 the couple and 4 of their children were living in Lower Street, Pulborough.  William was a 55 year old agricultural labourer and Esther was 54.  Their next door neighbours one side were 72 year old Jane Doick and her son James Doick and to the other side the family of 56 year old William Herbert.

William Holder and Esther Mills had 9 known children:

  1. James Holder was baptised on 13 September 1829 in Pulborough.  He was 11 years old in 1841.

  2. Harriet Holder was baptised on 10 December 1831 in Pulborough.  She was 9 years old in 1841.

  4. Sarah Holder was baptised on 11 December 1836 in Pulborough and buried there on 30 December 1845.  When the 1841 census was recorded she was 4 years old.

  5. William Holder was born about 1838.  He was buried on 25 May 1844 in Pulborough.  He was 2 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.

  6. Thomas Holder was baptised on 18 November 1841 in Pulborough.
