Samuel OLDER (c1710-1784)

and Hannah LASHFORD (c1710-1789)

Samuel Older and Hannah Lashford married on 8 February 1736 in Reigate, Surrey.

Samuel Older's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 5 April 1784 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  He left a will dated 2 November 1775 and proved on 16 April 1784 (click here to read my attempt at a transcript).  Might he have been the son of Samuel Older of Horsham and Elizabeth Halloway who married on 24 October 1711 in Itchingfield, Sussex?

Hannah Lashford's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 24 June 1789 in Billingshurst and the burial register recorded that she was a widow.

On 8 March 1750, Samuel took on a young apprentice, namely, Richard Guile.

Samuel Older and Hannah Lashford had 5 known children:

  1. Samuel Older was mentioned in his father's will as deceased.  He was buried on 25 May 1773 in Billingshurst.  He may have been baptised as Samuel Holder on 25 March 1738 at the West Street Independent Chapel in Dorking, Surrey.

Samuel married Ann Barnard by banns on 20 April 1767 in Shipley, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Garnat and Robert Collis.

As a widow Ann Older married Henry Matthews by banns on 19 August 1777 in Billinghurst.  He was then a bachelor.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Chatfield and William Joyner.

Samuel and Ann had 4 known children:

    1. Hannah Older was baptised on 30 August 1767 in Billingshurst.  She was left a legacy of 20 in her grandfather's will, which she was to receive when she reached 18 years of age.

    2. Samuel Older was baptised on 9 April 1769 in Billingshurst.  He was also left a 20 legacy by his grandfather.

    3. Mary Older was baptised on 6 January 1771 in Billingshurst.  She was left a 20 legacy by her grandfather.

    4. Ann Older was baptised on 3 January 1773 in Billingshurst.  Like her elder siblings she was left a 20 legacy by grandfather, to be paid when she reach 18 years of age.

  2. Hannah Older was buried on 29 May 1765 in Billingshurst.  It was noted in the burial register that she was the daughter of Samuel Older.  She may have been baptised as Hannah Holder on 1 March 1740 at the West Street Independent Chapel in Dorking, Surrey.

  3. James Older was appointed the executor of his father's will.  Might he have been buried on 27 January 1810 in Billingshurst?

Did he married Eleanor Etheridge on 11 April 1765 in Billingshurst?  However, there was a James Older baptised in Billingshurst on 6 March 1736/7, the son of Jeremiah Older (c1700-1767) and Ann Longhurst (1701-1768).

Or did he marry Martha Turner on 28 November 1779 in Itchingfield?  James was then of Billingshurst and Martha of Itchingfield.

  4. An unnamed son of Samuel Older was buried on 3 July 1748 in Billingshurst.

  5. Mary Older was buried on 10 August 1763 in Billingshurst.  It was noted in the burial register that she was the daughter of Samuel Older.

Elizabeth Oulder wife of Samuel Oulder was buried on 29 April 1743 in Billingshurst.
