Richard OLDER (1730-?)

and Elizabeth LANGLEY (c1730-1798)

Richard Older and Elizabeth Langley were married on 8 October 1752 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  He was then of Henfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors).

Richard Holder was baptised on 22 November 1730 in Woodmancote.  His father's name was recorded as Goodman Holder in the baptism register, who was then a journeyman shoemaker at Blackstone Street.  Many fathers were named "Goodman" in the Woodmancote registers at that time!  Richard's parents were most likely to have been John Older who in 1733 was also described as a journeyman shoemaker of Blackstone Street, and Anne Avery.

Elizabeth Langley's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been baptised on 25 August 1734 in Henfield, Sussex, and have been the daughter of Thomas Langly and Sarah RawlyElizabeth Holder was buried on 1 July 1798 in Woodmancote.

Richard Older and Elizabeth Langley had 7 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Older was baptised on 2 September 1753 in Henfield.  A Child of Older was buried on 7 August 1754 in Woodmancote.

  2. Ann Older was baptised on 21 March 1756 in Woodmancote.

  3. Ralph Older was baptised on 1 September 1758 in Woodmancote.

  4. Jane Older was baptised on 7 June 1761 in Woodmancote.

Jane married Thomas White by licence on 30 December 1784 in Woodmancote.  He was then a bachelor and husbandman of Henfield and she a spinster of Woodmancote.  The witnesses to their marriage were A. Dennet and John Dennett, and they were married by the Curate, Thomas Marchant.

  5. Elizabeth Older was baptised on 29 April 1764 in Woodmancote.

Before her marriage Elizabeth had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Ann Holder was baptised on 22 July 1787 in Woodmancote.  She married Daniel Caplin in 1813.  (They have their own page.)

Elizabeth married William Coppard by licence on 6 March 1790 in Woodmancote.  He was then of Poynings.  The witnesses to the marriage were Charles Dennett and William Piper and they were married by the Curate, Thomas Marchant.

  6. William Older was baptised on 24 Mary 1767 in Woodmancote.  He married Susanna White in 1791.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Richard Holder was baptised on 12 April 1772 in Woodmancote.

The Woodmancote register records the following burials:

  1. Richard Older on 30 August 1761 - no further details are given.

  2. Richard Holder on 5 July 1773 - no further details.

  3. Richard Older on 26 October 1781 - no further details.

Might the first Richard have been a son of Richard and Elizabeth's born soon after they married?  Could the second be that of the son born in 1772 and the third of Richard senior?  However, Richard born in 1730, may have had an Uncle Richard Older.
