James OLDER (1737-1810)

and Eleanor ETHERIDGE (1745-1825)

 

James Older and Eleanor Etheridge may have been my 5x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 11 April 1765 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  The witnesses to the marriage were Ann Peton and Daniel Etheridge.

James Oulder may have been baptised on 6 March 1736/7 in Billingshurst and have been the son of Jeremiah Older (c1700-1767) and Ann Longhurst (1701-1768).  James was mentioned in Jeremiah's will.  James was appointed the sole executor of the will of his nephew, Eli Etheridge (1762-1786).  James was also the sole beneficiary of Eli's will and he received the freehold house, carpenters shop and garden known as Roser Gate House in Billingshurst (Rosier Gate on todays map).  The property had previously belonged to Daniel Haylor who was Eli's Great Grandfather.

I have recently obtained the 1780 will of Samuel Older of Billingshurst who appointed his son James Older as executor.  I have not found a baptism for James son of Samuel, so am now not sure which was my possible James.

Eleanor Etheridge was born on 26 February 1744/5 and baptised on 9 March 1744/5 in Billingshurst.  She was the daughter of John Etheridge (1708-1777) and Jane Haylor (1718-1777).  She died aged 80 years and was buried on 23 December 1825 in Billingshurst.

A settlement certificate was issued on 27 November 1770 by Billingshurst parish to Shipley parish, mentioning James, spouse Ellen and children Jane and Ellen.

A James Older of Billingshurst took on Sarah Holden as an apprentice on 14 October 1791.

 

James Older and Eleanor Etheridge had 2 or 3 children:

  1. Jane Older was baptised on 31 March 1766 in Billingshurst.

    Jane may have married Thomas Burchal by banns on 6 January 1789 in Billingshurst.  Thomas was then from Rudgwick.  The witnesses to their marriage were Luke Greenfield and Robert Parsons.

  2. Ellen Older was baptised on 16 July 1769 in Billingshurst.

    Eleanor married James Mitchaner on 9 December 1790 in Billingshurst.  The witnesses were Luke Greenfield and Foice Champion.

  3. Allen Older, my 4x Great Grandfather, may have been part of this family.  He was born about 1775 in Sussex.  He married Sarah Brooks in 1794.  (They have their own page.)  Eleanor did have a brother named Allen Etheridge, born in 1750.
