Henry HOLDER (1832-1915)

and Ann WOOLVEN (1829-1865)

and Mary Ann PETERS (1837-1909)

Henry Holder may have married twice, firstly to Ann Woolvin on 13 October 1855 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  And secondly to Mary Ann Heffern, nee Peters, possibly between 1881 and 1891.  She had previously married Patrick Heffern on 10 March 1864 in Brighton.  (They were not my direct ancestors).

Henry Holder was baptised on 8 April 1832 in Woodmancote.  He was the son of William Holder (1799-1865) and Mary Ann Sayers (1801-1873s).  He died on 28 February 1915 at the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton, Sussex.  In 1851 he was an 18 year old servant and agricultural labourer living with his parents in the home of John Wood at Wick Farm in Albourne.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was an agricultural labourer living in Woodmancote with his family.  He was still an agricultural labourer at the time of the 1881 census and living in Blackstone in Woodmancote.

Ann Woolven was baptised on 8 November 1829 in Horsham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Edward Woolven and Catherine Bates.  She died aged 36 years and was buried on 17 September 1865 in Woodmancote.

Mary Ann Peters was born on 17 October 1837 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Peters and Elizabeth Hards (1814-?).  She died on 1 February 1909 in Henfield.  At the time of the 1841 census she was 3 years old and living with her father in Neptown, Henfield.  In 1851 she was a 13 year old scholar and pauper living in the workhouse at New Shoreham.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was an unmarried 23 year old housemaid in the home of Robert Barton, the Rector of Etchingham, Sussex, at the Rectory.

In 1891 the couple and 3 of their sons (all named Holder) were living at Bilborough Lane in Woodmancote.  Henry was then a 59 year old agricultural labourer and Mary Ann was 53.  Also with them on census night were 3 visitors, namely, Sarah A. Jenner aged 22, Arthur E. Bentley a 23 year old under keeper and his 22 year old wife Elizabeth Bentley (Henry and Mary Ann's daughter).

Henry Holder and Ann Woolven had 4 known children:

  1. George Holder was baptised on 16 November 1856 in Woodmancote.

  2. William Holder was baptised on 25 July 1858 in Woodmancote.

  3. Annie Holder was baptised on 1 July 1860 in Woodmancote.  When the 1871 census was recorded she was a 10 year old scholar and living with her grandmother in part of Wick Farm, Albourne.

  4. Mary Holder was baptised on 5 July 1863 in Woodmancote.

Patrick Heffern and Mary Ann Peters had 2 known children:

  1. James Herbert Heffern was baptised on 8 January 1864 in Henfield.  At the time of the 1861 census he was a 16 year old agricultural labourer living with his mother and step father.

  2. Matthew Heffern apparently lived as a vagrant and was given meals in an outhouse.

Henry Holder and Mary Ann Peters had 5 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Heffern was baptised on 30 August 1868 in Woodmancote.  When the 1881 census was recorded she was 12 years old.  Elizabeth married Arthur C. Bentley from Angmering.  In 1891 the couple were visitors in her parents home.

  2. John Heffern was baptised on 24 April 1870 in Woodmancote.  As John Holder he married Sarah Ann Jenner in 1892.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Alfred Heffern was baptised on 31 December 1871 in Woodmancote.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1891 he was a 19 year old general domestic servant.

  4. Alice Heffern was baptised on 27 July 1873 in Woodmancote.  In 1881 she was a 7 year old scholar.
