Thomas HOADLEY (1657-1742)

and Susanna TURNER (c1660-1690)

and Mary LUXFORD (c1670-1721)

Thomas Hoadley and Mary Luxford were probably my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 20 October 1698 in Fletching, Sussex.  He was of Chailey and she of Fletching.  Thomas had previously married Susanna Turner and 18 May 1681 in Chailey, Sussex

Thomas Hoadley was baptised on 3 April 1657 in Chailey.  He was the son of Edward Hoadley (c1610-1687) and Anne (c1630-1703).  He may have been buried on 8 November 1742 in Chailey.  The burial register only records that Thomas Hoadly was buried.  He was appointed the sole executor of his father's will.

Susanna Turner's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 13 July 1690 in Chailey, and it was recorded in the burial register that she was Susanna, wife of Thomas Hoadly.  The Chailey burial register also records that Susan, wife of Thomas Hoadly was buried on 29 March 1692.  A Susan Turner was born on 20 March 1655 and baptised on 8 May 1656 in Shermanbury, the daughter of Edward Turner.

Mary Luxford's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 4 September 1721 in Chailey and the burial register recorded that she was Mary, wife of Thomas Hoadly.  A Mary Luxford was baptised in October 1660 in Fletching, the daughter of John Luxford.  Another Mary Luxford was baptised there on 8 September 1667, the daughter of Richard Luxford and Faith (possibly Atheroll).

Thomas Hoadley and Susanna Turner had 4 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Hoadley was baptised on 6 March 1682/3 in Chailey.

Elizabeth married Oliver Tomset on 12 June 1705 in Chailey.

Oliver was buried on 18 July 1717 in Chailey and the burial register recorded that he was Oliver Tompsett a labourer.

Oliver and Elizabeth had the following known children:

    1. Thomas Tomset was baptised on 16 July 1706 in Chailey.

    2. John Tomset was baptised on 14 March 1713/4 in Chailey.

    3. Elizabeth Tompset was baptised on 28 November 1716 in Chailey.

  2. Thomas Hoadly was baptised on 5 August 1686 in Chailey.

  3. Richard Hoadly was baptised on 4 January 1688/9 in Chailey.  He probably died young.

  4. Ann Hoadly, daughter of Thomas Hoadly was buried on 28 August 1690 in Chailey

Thomas Hoadley and Mary Luxford had 5 known children:

  1. Mary Hoadly was baptised on 7 September 1699 in Chailey.

  2. Edward Hoadly was baptised on 6 October 1701 in Chailey.  He may have been buried on 30 December 1779 in Chailey.  It was noted in the burial register that Edward Hoadley was of Newick.  Edward was a blacksmith of Chailey.  He took on 2 apprentices, namely Thomas Rowland son of John Rowland on 29 April 1741 and then John Foord on 25 March 1752.

Edward may have married Susan Attree by licence on 17 September 1746 in Withyham, Sussex.  Susan was then of Chailey.

Susan was buried on 8 May 1761 in Chailey and it was noted in the burial register that she was the wife of Edward Hoadley.  Susan left a will dated 12 June 1754 in which she mentioned that she was the wife of Edward Hoadly a blacksmith of Chailey.  She also mentioned her son Edward who was under 21 years old, her goddaughter Jane Attree and Thomas Poter of East Hoathley.

Edward and Susan had the following children:

    1. John Hoadley was baptised on 28 July 1747 in Chailey and buried there on 29 January 1747/8.

    2. Edward Hoadley was baptised on 17 February 1749/50 in Chailey and buried there on 13 April 1764.

  3. William Hoadly was baptised on 4 November 1703 in Chailey and buried there on 12 February 1705/6.

  4. Richard Hoadly, may have been my 7x Great Grandfather.  He was baptised in February 1705/6 in Chailey.  He may have been the Richard who married Sarah Purvey in 1732.  (They have their own page.)  Richard died in 1742 and Sarah in 1743, leaving 3 or 4 children aged between 2 and 5 or 7.

  5. Anne Hoadly was baptised on 24 September 1708 in Chailey.
