Thomas HOADLY
(c1650-1727)
and Elizabeth PEIRCE (1651-1693)
and Sarah (?-?)

Thomas
Hoadly and
Elizabeth Parke
married by licence on 21 September 1676 at All
Saints, Lewes, Sussex. Their marriage licence was dated 21 September
1676 and issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes. It recorded that Thomas
Hoadly was of Bolney, Sussex and Elizabeth Peirce
of Newick, Sussex. Surety for the licence was provided by Thomas and
Walter Jones of Lewes.
Thomas Hoadley's
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. He may have been baptised on 12 July 1658 in East Grinstead, Sussex,
the son of John
Hoadley (c1625-?) and Elizabeth. Thomas was a
blacksmith of Shermanbury when he died. He left a
will dated
29 March 1727 (I have a copy of this document). He was unable to sign his will
and made his mark. There was a
Thomas Hoadley baptised in
Chailey, Sussex, the son of
Edward Hoadley,
but he married there and had several children baptised in the parish.
Elizabeth Peirse
was baptised on 3 August 1651 in Newick. She was the daughter of
John Peirse and Elizabeth. She was buried on 18
Marcy 1693 in Shermanbury and the burial register recorded that she was
Elizabeth wife of Thomas Hodely.
Sarah was named as the wife of Thomas Hoadley in his 1727 will
and was also his executrix. She was left the house and shop for her
natural life and on her death the property was to be sold by trustees named
as Charles Matthews of Bolney and George Ashfield of
Wivelsfield.
Thomas Hoadley and Elizabeth Peirce had
8 known children:
-
Thomas Hoadly
was baptised on 9 December 1677 in Bolney. He died before his
father. Thomas married
Anne Dobell in 1698. (They have their own page.)
-
John Hoadly was baptised on 20 April 1679 in Bolney. He died
after 1727. Under the terms of his father's will he was to receive 1
shilling.
-
Elizabeth Hoadly was baptised on 14 January 1681/2 in Bolney.
She died after 1727. She also received a legacy of 1 shilling from
her father.
-
Sarah Hoadly was baptised on 2 February 1683/4 in Bolney.
She was not mentioned in her father's will and may have been buried on 27
December 1707 in Shermanbury, as Sarah daughter of Thomas
Hoadley.
-
William Hodeley was baptised on 4 September 1687 in Shermanbury and
buried there on 8 January 1687/8.
-
William Hodley was baptised on 28 November 1690 in Shermanbury.
He died after 1727. He was left the contents of his father's shop.
William married Ann Emery by
licence dated 22
April 1718 and issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester. He was then a bachelor and
husbandman of Shermanbury. She was a widow of West Grinstead.
The sponsors of the marriage licence were William himself and Samuel
Juniper a wheelwright of West Grinstead. As Ann Grinvell
she may have previously married William Emery on 1 October 1702 in
Shermanbury. Ann and her first husband had 1 known son:
-
William Emery was baptised on 1 October 1702 in Shermanbury.
He may have married Ann Evans on 8 April 1735 in Henfield. But
as his mother had a second son named William, he may have died young.
William and Ann had 2, possibly 3, children:
-
William Hoadly was baptised on 17 June 1719 in Shermanbury.
He was named in his Grandfather's 1727 will.
-
John Hoadly was baptised on 17 December 1721 in Shermanbury.
He was not named in his Grandfather's will.
-
Elizabeth Hoadley may or may not have been their daughter.
She was
not mentioned in the 1727 will of Thomas Hoadley.
Elizabeth married Thomas Finch (1721-?) on 3 January 1743/4 in
Shermanbury. He was the son of
William Finch (1685-?) and
Elizabeth Puttock (1688-?), who were my 7x Great Grandparents.
-
Richard Hodely was baptised on 18 March 1692 in Shermanbury and
buried there on 7 May 1698.
-
Ann Hoadly was mentioned in her father's will, from which she
received a legacy of 1 shilling.

A John Hoadley of Westminster married Elizabeth Burtenshaw of
Shermanbury on 19 May 1752 at All Saints, Lewes.
Elizabeth was baptised on 27 August 1728 in Shermanbury and was the daughter
of John Burtenshaw and Elizabeth Burtenshaw. (They had
married by licence on 29 November 1726 in Shermanbury. John was a
yeoman of Shermanbury and Elizabeth was of Lewes.)
John left a will which was attested on 1 May 1792. It mentioned his
grandchildren, Thomas Hoadly, Richard Hoadly and Nicholas
Hoadly, who received £30 a piece. He also mentioned his sons
John Burtenshaw and Nicholas Burtenshaw and son-in-law Richard
Unwins.
Presumably John Hoadley was born in the 1720's but where and who were
his parents? Given that he married Elizabeth from Shermanbury, could
this mean that he was perhaps previously of Shermanbury, or had Hoadley kin
from Shermanbury? Might he have been the John baptised in 1721 in
Shermanbury?
1.

HOADLEY
