Richard HOADLEY
(1706-1742)
and Sarah PURVEY (1706-1743)

Richard
Odeley and
Sarah Purvey
were my 6x Great Grandparents.
(Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)
They married on
10 November 1732 at the Fleet Prison in London.
At the time he was a bachelor of Slaugham, Sussex and she was a spinster.
Richard Hoadly was probably baptised
in February 1705/6 in Chailey, Sussex, the son of
Thomas Hoadly (1657-1742) and
Mary Luxford.
He was buried on 13 August 1742 in Slaugham and the burial register records
his name as Richard Handlee. (There was also a Richard Hodeley
who was baptised on 31 January 1704/5 in Shermanbury,
Sussex, the son of
Thomas Hoadley
(1677-?) and Ann
Dobell (c1680-?).) Richard was apprenticed to
Edmund Denman
a
wheelwright of Newick on 24 November 1719, for a period of 7 years.
Sarah Purvey was baptised on 9 August 1706 in Bolney, Sussex.
She was the daughter of
Henry
Purvey (1665-1711) and
Bridget
Sherley (1668-1745). As Sarah Hoadly widow of
Shermanbury, she was buried on 14 March 1742/3 in Chailey, Sussex. I
am assuming that after her husband died, Sarah and their children went to
live with Richard's father in Chailey.
On 7 October 1736 a removal order was issued by the Cuckfield or Slaugham overseers to
remove Richard Hoadley and his wife Sarah, and their children Sarah
and Richard, to Slaugham or Cuckfield (Ref. PAR/301/32/2/3). Then on
24 June 1739, a settlement certificate was issued to Richard Hordlee,
together with his wife Sarah and 3 children, namely Thomas, Sarah and
Richard, by Cuckfield to Slaugham, or vice versa (Ref. PAR/301/32/1/4).
Sarah's younger sister,
Bridget Purvey, was also
one of my 6x Great
Grandmother, who married
Thomas Lillyot in 1733. They raised
their family in Woodmacote, Sussex. Might they have taken in Richard
and Sarah's children?
Richard Hoadley and Sarah Purvey
had 5 known children:
-
Richard Hordle was baptised on 27 March 1733 in Slaugham. He
was buried on 20 March 1743/4 in Slaugham and the burial register recorded
that he was Richard Hordlee, a youth.
-
Sare Hordly was born 19 January 1734/5 and baptised on 12 September
1735 in Slaugham.
-
James Hordlee was born on 16 July 1737 and baptised the next day in
Slaugham.
As James Hoadley he married Mary Stapley on 14 August 1766
in Twineham, Sussex.
-
Thomas Hordlee, my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 10 September
1738 in Slaugham. He was of Shermanbury when he married
Mary Knight,
widow, in 1761.
-
John Hordlee was baptised on 15 March 1740/1 in Slaugham.
As John Hoadly he married Mary Graimes. The banns were
published in Henfield parish church in February 1770. He was then a
bachelor and she a spinster of Poynings, Sussex.
