Edward HOADLEY
(c1610-1687)
and Annis BRACKPOLE (c1610-1640)
and Anne (c1620-1651)
and Anne (c1630-1703)

Edward
Hoadley and probably his third wife
Anne were possibly my 9x Great Grandparents. Edward had first
married Annis Brackpole on 21 January 1633/4
in Buxted, Sussex. His second wife may also have been named Anne.
Edward Hoadley's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
He was buried on 4 November 1687 in
Chailey. The burial register recorded his name as Edward Hoadly.
He left a will dated 21 July 1679 in which he mentioned his wife Ann,
son Thomas, William Crayley who married his daughter Susan,
unnamed children of John Hards and Richard Plaw.
(Edward was unlikely to have been the son of Robert Hoadly who had at
least 3 children, namely Adam who died in 1653, Mary who
married John Earle in 1627 and another daughter who married a Mills.
Adam left a will, in which he mentioned his 2 sisters. At the time of
his death Adam was of Buxted.)
Annis Brackpole's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
She was buried on 12 October 1640 in Chailey, Sussex and the burial register
recorded that she was Anne the wife of Thomas Hoadley.
She may have been the daughter of Nicholas Brackpole who had a son
Richard baptised in 1597 and a daughter Susan baptised in 1600, both in
Buxted.
Anne wife of Edward Hoadly was buried on 7 October 1651 in
Chailey.
Anne was buried on 27 August 1703 in Chailey and it was recorded in
the burial register that she was Anne Hoadly, widow.
When the 1662 Hearth Tax assessment was under taken, an Edward
Hoadley of Chailey had 2 hearths.
Edward Hoadley
and Annis Brackpole had 3 known children:
-
Richard Hoadley was baptised on 28 February 1635/6 in Chailey.
He may have been buried on 4 December 1668 in Chailey, unfortunately the
burial register only records that Richard Hoadly was buried.
-
Susan Hoadley was baptised on 28 February 1635/6 in Chailey.
She was buried on 11 August 1676 in Chailey and the burial register
recorded that she was Susana wife of William Craley.
As
Susanna Hoadly she married William Crawly on 25 September 1675
in Chailey. He had previously married Ann Swaine on 30 April
1661 in Chailey. After Susanna he married Jane Ade or
Deane by licence on 5 February 1677/8 at St. John Southover, Lewes.
-
Mary Hoadly was baptised on 5 May 1638/9 in Chailey. She may
have been buried on 5 August 1670 in Chailey, unfortunately the burial
register only records that Mary Hoadly was buried.
Edward Hoadley and Anne had 3 known children:
-
Edward Hoadly was baptised on 5 May 1655 in Chailey and buried
there on 30 December 1659.
-
Thomas Hoadley, was possibly my 8x Great Grandfather. He was baptised on 3 April 1657 in Chailey.
He married twice, firstly to
Susanna Turner
in 1681 and then to
Mary Luxford
in 1698. (They have their own page.)
-
Bridget Hoadly was baptised on 21 June 1660 in Chailey and buried
there on 24 October 1663.

An Edward Hordly married Elizabeth Edgly on 8 August 1654 at
St. Peter the Great in Chichester, Sussex. Then on 24 October 1670 a
marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes to Edward Hordly,
merchant of Chichester and Frances Carden widow of Chichester.
They married as Edward Hardly and Elizabeth Carden on 25
October 1670 at St. John sub Castro in Lewes. Edward and
Elizabeth may have had a daughter, Elizabeth Hordley to whom a
marriage licence was issued on 6 September by the Deanery of Chichester for
her marriage to John Sowton. She was a spinster and he a
bachelor and they were both of Chichester.
