Albert HOADLEY
(1831-?)
and Emma GEERE (c1827-?)

Albert Hoadley and Emma Geere married by banns on 26 November
1854 in Henfield, Sussex. They were both then of full age and of
Henfield. He was a bachelor and bricklayer. She was a spinster.
The witnesses to their marriage were Charles Dowlen and Susan Hoadley.
(They were not my direct ancestors. Albert was the brother of my 2x
Great Grandmother, Susan Hoadley.)
Albert Hoadley was baptised on 14 August 1831 in Henfield. He
was the son of John
Hoadley (1799-1865) and
Susan Norris
(1802-1881). He was a bricklayer. In 1841 he was 10 years old
and living with his parents in Church Street, Henfield. When the 1901
census was recorded she was a 74 year old married laundress and she was
living in West Grinstead Road, Cowfold, not father from the family of her
daughter-in-law Jane Hoadley
Emma Geere was born about 1827 in Washington, Sussex. She was
the daughter of William Geere and possibly Ann Monery.
Her father was a bricklayer. In 1841 she was a 15 year old servant,
living in Washington.
When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and 3 children were living in
Mill Lane, Lower Beeding. Albert was a 30 year old bricklayer and Emma
was 31. He gave his place of birth as Henfield and she as Washington.
The 1871 census records that the couple and 4 children were living at
Station ??? Reading Room Cottages in Cowfold. Albert was a 39 year old
bricklayer and Emma was 44.
In 1881 the couple and 2 of their sons were living at Bowling Green in Cowfold and Albert was a 50 year old bricklayer. Also with them on
census night was unmarried 32 year old lodger, Caleb Tidy.
By 1901 Albert was living in Preston, Sussex.
When the 1891 census was recorded, Albert was a 59 year old married
bricklayer and he was lodging in the home of Arthur Wright
at 30 Dover Road in Northfleet, Kent.

William Hoadley was baptised on 9
March 1856 in Lower Beeding, Sussex. He died aged 25 years and was
buried on 27 December 1880 in Cowfold. At the time of the 1861
census he was a 5 year old scholar. In 1871 he was a 15 year old
bricklayer's labourer.
William married Jane Mansbridge by banns on 10 May 1875 in Cowfold.
He was then a bachelor and mason from Henfield, whilst she was a
spinster and minor. Their fathers were named as Albert
Hoadley a bricklayer and James Mansbridge a
labourer. The witnesses to their marriage were James
Mansbridge and Barbara Edwards.
Jane was baptised on 22 July 1855 in Cowfold and was the daughter of
James Mansbridge (1837-?) and
Rebecca
Roberts (1836-1864).
When the 1881 census was recorded, Jane was a 25 year old widow, living
with her 3 children in Cowfold.
At the time of the 1901 census, Jane was a 46 year old widow and
laundress, living in West Grinstead Road, Cowfold. She was then
the head of her household with comprised of her 3 children and her 66
year old widower father.
William and Jane had 4 known children:

Edith Rebecca Hoadley Mansbridge was baptised on 25 April 1875 in Cowfold. She
was a 6 year old scholar in 1881. In 1901 she was an unmarried 26
year old dressmaker living with her mother.

Frederick William Hoadley was born on 2 December 1876 at Church
Yard and baptised on 25 February 1877 in Cowfold. He was 4 years old in 1881.
In 1901 he was an unmarried 24 year old carpenter and he was living with
his mother.
Frederick married
Maria Jane Stenning in the fourth quarter of 1901 in the Petworth
registration district.

Elizabeth Hoadley was born on 11 June 1879 ay Trenchman
and baptised on 27 July 1879 in Cowfold. She died aged 15 months
and was buried on 8 September 1880 in Cowfold.

Albert James Hoadley was born on 8 March 1881 at
Trenchmore and baptised on 24 April 1881 in Cowfold. The baptism
register noted that his father was deceased.
At the time of the 1881 census he was 27 days old. He was a 20
year old carpenter in 1901.

Frederick Hoadley was baptised on 26 July 1857 in Lower Beeding.
He was 3 years old when the 1861 census was recorded. In 1871 he
was a 13 year old scholar.
In 1881 he was an unmarried 24 year old bricklayer, living at home with
his parents.
Frederick married Alice Thorogood in the second quarter of 1883 in
Dartford, Kent.
Alice was born about 1865 in Dartford.
When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and 4 children were living 29
Great Queen Street in Dartford, and Frederick was then said to be a 31
year old bricklayer. He then gave his place of birth as Henfield.
By 1901 the family had moved to 29 St. Martins Road, Dartford. Frederick
was then a 42 year old bricklayer and gave his place of birth as Dartford.
Frederick and Alice had the following known children:

Alice Hoadley was born about 1883 in Dartford. She was an 8
year old scholar in 1891.

Agnes Hoadley was born about 1885 in Dartford. She was a 6
year old scholar in 1891. In 1901 she was a 15 year old chemistry
factory hand and living at home.

Winifred Hoadley was born about 1887 in Dartford. In 1891
she was a 4 year old scholar. She was 13 in 1901.

Harold Hoadley was born about 1889 in Dartford. When the
1891 census was recorded he was 2 years old. In 1901 he was 12
years old.

Rose Hoadley was born about 1891 in Dartford. She was 10
years old in 1901.

Beatrice Hoadley was born about 1896 in Dartford. In 1901
she was 5 years old.

Lenoard Hoadley was born about 1898 in Dartford. He was 3
years old in 1901.

Caroline Hoadley was born in 1900 in Dartford. When the
1901 census was recorded she was 7 months old.

Caroline Hoadley was baptised on 17 June 1860 in Lower Beeding.
She was a year old old in 1861. In 1871 she was a 10 year old
scholar.
When the 1881 census was recorded she was a 20 year old domestic servant
living in the home of John William Staples at 52 West Street,
Brighton.

Albert Hoadley was baptised on 22 May 1864 in Lower Beeding.
He was a 7 year old scholar in 1871.
In 1881 he was a 17 year old baker, living at home.
As Albert Hoadly he married Ruth Reeves in the fourth
quarter of 1883 in the Brighton registration district.
Ruth was baptised as Ruth Andrews on 10 January 1864 in
Petworth, the daughter of Ellen Andrews nee
Wackford (1821-?). The 1871 census records that she was 7
year old Ruth Reeves and she was living with her
parents William Reeves (c1828-?) and Ellen,
at 50 Scotland Street, Brighton. She was then a scholar.
When the 1881 census was recorded she was
probably 17 year old Ruth O. Raves living in Brighton as a
domestic servant.
At the time of the 1891 census the family were living in Eastbourne,
Sussex. In 1901 the family were living in Haywards Heath and Albert
was a baker. He then gave his place of birth as Cowfold. Ruth
was then said to have been born in about 1865 in Petworth, Sussex.
When their son Albert died in 1915, they were living in Haywards
Heath, Sussex.
Albert and Emma had 6 known children:

Kate Hoadley was born about 1884 in Brighton. When the 1891
census was recorded she was 7 years old and living with her parents.

Albert Hoadley was born in the first quarter of 1888 in Brighton.
He was 3 years old when the 1891 census was recorded. He died aged
27 years on 16 May 1915. He was then a sergeant with the 1st
Battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was buried in the
Aire Communal Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France.

Emma Grace Hoadley was born in the first quarter of 1890 in
Brighton. She was a year old in 1891.

Ellen Olive Hoadley was born in the third quarter of 1892 in
Eastbourne.

Frederick Hoadley was born in the third quarter of 1896 in
Haywards Heath.

Frank Thomas Hoadley was born in the fourth quarter of 1898 in
Haywards Heath.
