Henry HILLS (c1807-1894)

and Hannah COMBES (c1809-1848)

Henry Hill and Hannah Combes married by banns on 18 September 1828 in Cowfold, Sussex.  The were both of Cowfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Stanford and Henry Hill.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Henry Hill was born about 1805-7 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  He died aged 87 years at the Horsham Union and was buried on 22 October 1894 in Lower Beeding. 

Hannah Combes was born about 1809.  She died aged 39 years and was buried on 25 June 1848 in Lower Beeding.  Might she have been the daughter of George Coombes and Ann Richardson who married on 16 April 1797 in Newtimber, Sussex?

In 1841 Henry and Hannah were living in Lower Beeding.  He was said to have been 35 years old and she was 30.  Five of their children were at home on census night.

The 1851 census records a 45 year old widower, Henry Hill was living in Lower Beeding, with his children, 12 year old Eliza, Harry 11 and Sarah 6.  Also with them was 22 year old son-in-law William Richardson who was born in Chailey.

When the 1861 census was recorded Henry was a 56 year old widower and agricultural labourer, lodging in the home of 66 year old Stephen Tidy and his 65 year old wife, Mary, at Maplehurst in Nuthurst.  Also part of the household was Stephen and Mary son Jacob Tidy an unmarried 21 year old agricultural labourer and 28 year old lodger John Millham.

Henry Hill and Hannah Combes had 7 known children:

1. Emily Hill was baptised on 4 January 1829 in Nuthurst.  She was 10 years old in 1841.  She died aged 16 years and was buried on 20 August 1845 in Lower Beeding.

2. Ann Hill was baptised on 10 April 1831 in Nuthurst.  She was 10 years old in 1841.

   Ann married Thomas Jeffery on 27 March 1848 in Lower Beeding.  Ann was then 18 years old.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Jeffery and Henry Hill.

3. Eliza Hill was baptised on 28 July 1833 in Nuthurst.  She was 6 years old in 1841.  She married William Richardson in 1850 and then Thomas Venn in 1860.  (They have their own page.)

4. William Hill was baptised on 7 February 1836 in Nuthurst.  He was 5 years old in 1841.

5. Harry Hill was born about 1839.  He was 2 years old in 1841.  He was 11 years old in 1851.

6. Mary Hill was baptised on 3 April 1842 in Lower Beeding.

   Mary married Jacob Tidy on 21 November 1863 in Lower Beeding.  She was a 22 year old spinster and he was a 24 year old bachelor and labourer from Nuthurst.  Their fathers were named as Stephen Tidy and Henry Hills who were both labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Harry Hills and Ann Jeffery.

   Jacob was born about 1839/40 in West Grinstead.

7. Sarah Hill was baptised on 10 November 1844 in Lower Beeding.  She was 6 years old in 1851.
