William HEWETT (1671-1732)

and Mary HOPKIN (c1680-?)

 

William Hewett and Mary Hopkin married by licence on 7 July 1702 in Terwick, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester on 2 July 1702.  It recorded that he was a weaver and they were both of Cocking.  Surety for the licence was provided by William himself and John Hewett a clothier of Cocking.  As a widow Mary Hewit married Richard Craddock by licence on 16 July 1733 in Cocking, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester on 15 July 1733 and recorded that she was a widow of Cocking whilst he was a widower and husbandman of Chichester, Sussex.  Surety for the licence was provided by Richard himself and William Wilks a baker of Chichester.

William Hewett was baptised on 20 August 1671 in Cocking, Sussex.  He was the son of John Hewett (1629-1707) and Joan Purslow (c1640-1720).  He was buried on 21 November 1732 in Cocking.

Mary Hopkin's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

 

William Hewett and Mary Hopkin had 9 known children:

  1. Mary Hewet was baptised on 22 December 1706 in Cocking.  As Mary Huett she may have married John Leggat by licence dated 20 January 1732/3 and issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  The marriage licence recorded that Mary was of Chichester whilst John was a clothier of Steyning, Sussex.  Surety for the licence was provided by John himself and Edward Talmy of Amberley, Sussex.  They had the following children:

    1. Frances Laggett was baptised on 29 March 1736 in Steyning.

    2. Elizabeth Lagget was baptised on 19 November 1741 in Steyning.

    3. Anne Legatt was baptised on 20 December 1747 in Steyning.

  2. Elizabeth Hewet was baptised on 6 March 1709/10 in Cocking.  She married Robert Penfold by licence on 29 September 1726 at St. Martin's in Chichester, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester on 29 September 1726 and recorded that she was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Cocking.

  3. William Hewitt was baptised on 4 February 1711/2 in Cocking.  He may have married Mary Philip on 7 November 1751 in Cocking.  But there was another William Hewett who was born in 1726.

  4. Jane Hewet was baptised on 30 June 1714 in Cocking.  She may have married William Burgess by licence on 19 January 1730/1 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.  He was then of Arlington, Surrey and she of Cocking.  A marriage licence was issued on 19 January 1730/1 by the Archdeaconry of Sussex, but recorded the brides name as Sarah.  There was a Sarah Hewitt born in 1708.

  5. John Hewett was baptised on 18 May 1716 in Cocking.  He may have married Sarah Farns in 1746.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Sarah Hewett was baptised on 21 April 1717 in Cocking.  She married John Bettsworth by licence on 5 July 1747 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.  He was then of Havent in Hampshire.  Their marriage licence was issued on the 4 July 1747 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  It recorded that she was a spinster of Cocking and he a bachelor and husbandman.  They had the following daughter:

    1. Elizabeth Bettesworth was baptised on 19 September 1755 in Cocking.

  7. Ann Hewett was baptised on 12 November 1718 in Cocking.  She may have married John Coleman on 14 October 1745 at St. Peter the Less in Chichester.  John and Ann had the following children:

    1. John Coleman was baptised on 5 December 1745 in Chichester.

    2. Ann Coleman was baptised on 4 January 1747 in Chichester.  An Ann Coleman was buried on 14 January 1751/2 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.

    3. Thomas Coleman was baptised on 24 September 1748 in Chichester.

    4. William Coleman was baptised on 29 November 1750 in Chichester.  A William Coleman was buried on 18 April 1751 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.

    5. James Coleman was baptised on 11 July 1752 in Chichester.  He was probably buried as an infant on 20 June 1753 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.

    6. Charles Coleman was baptised on 23 October 1753 in Chichester.

    7. Henry Coleman was baptised on 27 February 1756 in Chichester.  A Henry Coleman was buried on 17 June 1759 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.

  8. Martha Hewet was baptised on 14 August 1720 in Cocking.  She may have been buried in Cocking on 17 June 1745.

  9. Thomas Hewet was baptised on 3 February 1723 in Cocking.  He may have married twice, firstly to Deborah Dunstan by licence on 12 November 1748 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.  He was then of the city of Chichester and she of the parish of St. Peter the Great.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Deanery of Chichester on 11 November 1748 and recorded that he was a bachelor and she a spinster.  Thomas may then have married Ann Oliver by licence on 12 October 1754 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester.  He was again described as of the city of Chichester whilst she was of the parish of St. Peter the Great.  Their marriage licence was issued on 12 October 1754 by the Deanery of Chichester and recorded that he was a widower and she a spinster.
